I think Micah probably first considered betraying the gang at the end of chapter 3, when the Pinkertons offered gang members a deal, but didn’t actually betray the gang until after Guarma.

By then, the gang was in such a bad state that he probably thought betraying it would be the best way to ensure his survival, plus he was sufficiently ingratiated with Dutch at that point that he could be above suspicion. Neither of those two things were true for Micah before Guarma, and that’s why I think it was after that.

Andrew Milton makes it clear that he's more after Dutch as opposed to the entire gang, having even proposed sparing them all in exchange for him at one point. He more or less considers the deaths of members such as Hosea and Lenny to be both fair game and menial in comparison to apprehending him.

Those aside, he isn't exactly the real villain either, granted Micah's betrayal and subsequent reign of terror as a violent gang leader is much worse. Milton might be ruthless in cruel in how he goes about "doing his job", though he's ultimately more of an element to the circumstances the gang had forced themselves into. One which Micah exploited to his benefit.

@Demon oddsock I wouldn't say deliberately though. Arthur was set up by the O'Driscolls who while were implied to be working for the Pinkertons at the time, hadn't specifically been ordered to capture him. It was more Colm's idea to have it be Arthur to prompt Dutch into mounting a rescue.

Otherwise, Hosea's death was also from convenience, as his distraction had left him vulnerable for capture as the Pinkertons are implied to anticipated the Saint Denis bank robbery. Again, if anything, he'd directly went for Dutch, as shown when he and Ross had approached camp with the proposal. Put simply, I doubt the Pinkertons were attempting to exploit Dutch's descent to madness that they had no knowledge of in the first place.

I agree i think the whole Blackwater and st denis jobs were milton just trying to kill two birds with one stone (kill or capture dutch and kill or capture his men)
