@TheBionicNoodle , yeah I get ya and this did cross my mind, but at the end of the day, most of the shootouts mentioned was a ‘them or us’ situation. Where as with mr downes, he was a poor sick man and morally, they should’ve been helping the poor, not taking from them. That pretty much stood against they’re whole reason to fight.
Me personally I think it’s the point that’s meant to be made by Arthur’s redemption. He mentioned that they used to help the poor but now only help themselves. He realised that after everything the gang had lost their way, especially Dutch. Hence the whole of chapter 6 and why I think the Mr Downes incident is the worst, morally
