I loved the Wapiti plot just because it felt so realistic. You could really feel the strive of the natives to get to keep their way of life, but which was futile, in the end. It was truly heartbreaking to see that overwhelming power of the European Americans and the fruitless fight of the natives. It is kind of a rarity in video games that the 'heroes' don't win.
Here are my opinions on each subplot:
O’Driscolls: I felt that the O’Driscolls, being the driving force for much of the first two chapters and the arch nemeses of the gang, should’ve played a much larger role in the story— especially the latter half. The feud between Colm and Dutch really is only seen in Blessed are the Peacemakers, which sticks out like a sore thumb amidst the rest of the plot in chapter 3. What I do think worked well was how the O’Driscolls mirrored Dutch in the end, with him manipulating the Wapiti and not being much better than Colm despite using the O’Driscolls as the “pure-evil” motivator for the gang.
Grays vs. Braithwaites: I was a little iffy on this storyline. The “bloodfeud” shared between the families is only really seen in conversation, and there’s no big collision between the families in the storyline other than one or two random encounters. The escalation between the gang and these two families felt rushed. Additionally, amidst this bloodfeud, the O’Driscoll mission (Blessed are the Peacemakers) felt very out of place, and I think the O’Driscolls should have had a lot more importance in the story. All of this culminated in the final two missions, which I will admit were cool, should’ve been more; I think the shootout that got Sean killed should’ve been between the Braithwaites and the Grays with the gang having to fight both and pick a side.
Angelo Bronte and the Mob: As much as I love stories and films regarding the mafia, the mob felt very meh. I thought it was really cool to see an old western gang fight the new organized crime, but Bronte’s mob, specifically, felt underused. I think Bronte was most important in changing Dutch’s character from a charismatic leader to a vengeful psycho, but otherwise, he felt pretty insignificant.
Guarma Revolution: Out of all of the subplots, this definitely had to be my least favorite. It’s obvious that the Guarma chapter was either rushed or cut down a lot (likely to avoid more delays). Alberto Fussar and Levi Simon seemed pretty cool villains, but they were underutilized so much and could’ve been amazing villains. When Simon gets shot and Fussar yeets himself out of the window, super cool dramatic music plays. The music made me think that these two played a much larger role in the plot at one point. This chapter, although very messy, had some amazing missions like “Hell Hath No Fury” and it only makes you imagine what a longer expanded subplot could’ve been like.
Cornwall and the Wapiti: This subplot is probably my favorite. Cornwall, although not seen much, has always been one of the driving villains since the train robbery in chapter one— which arguably doomed the gang. As the comment above says, the plot felt real; you could understand the yearning for the Wapiti wanting to life freely amidst greedy expansionists like Cornwall’s men. This subplot also solidified Dutch’s downfall and Arthur’s redemption. Rains Fall was one of my favorite characters and helped Arthur redeem himself as well. I can’t not talk about the penultimate “My Last Boy” mission, which concluded this subplot in my favorite and most badass mission.
@Leprechaunlauch I couldn't agree more!
But in my opinion they did a good job with the O'Driscolls with all the random encounters and when they murdered my boy Kieren, I went nuts on them with explosive ammo. But Colm should've had more appearances for sure. (Also I hate "Blessed are the Peacemakers" so much. The conversation between Colm and Dutch is great but the rest is goofy as hell...)
You spoke facts about the feud between the Grays and the Braithwaites, so I've nothing to add.
I totally agree with your opinion about the Mob! I wish you could raid Bronte's mansion in free roam and kill his men without losing honor or not be chased by 1000 lawmen when you kill them in random encounters.
And I also totally share your opinion about Guarma. Even though he should've had more appearances, the few missions he was in made me love Levi Simon. I really liked the Guarma plot because of the theme, characters and music but it was hardcore rushed...And yeah the music that plays when Levi gets oofed is so amazing, as if Levi and Fussar were something way more dangerous and important than they seemed.
And last but not least I loved the plot with the Wapitit indians (should've voted for it). In all the western movies that I watched before playing the Red Dead games, Indians fought with white guys against a big antagonistic faction. So this plot was all I could've asked for before playing the games.
I’ll forever hate the grays vs brathwaites because of Sean’s death
Same reason I hate the odriscoll one, because Kieran’s death
And that Angelo bronte one was such bs
Like why did I fight so hard to get him out
ALIVE btw
For Dutch to drown him
Dutch "GET OUT HERE NOW! YOU IMBREAD TRASH!"
What do you think?
