I feel like people will flame me for this one but I want to put an end to this stupid debate!
Milton is a great character, but in my opinion people have every right to hate him, and saying "he was just doing his job" does not make him an honorable man and is not an excuse for the things he did. Here's why:
First of all, what's the actual definition of "just doing your job"? If we use this as an excuse for certain behavior of a person, then every antagonist in RDR2 was just doing their job... Leigh Gray was just doing his job as a Sheriff, Leviticus Cornwall was just doing his job as a business man, Alberto Fussar was just doing his job as the governor of Guarma, Levi Simon was just doing his job as Fussar's right hand, Colonel Favours was just doing his job as a Soldier and so on... Does that make any of them an honorable person? No, because they were all some cruel bastards that did terrible things. So it's all about HOW you do your job! Milton was indeed doing his job as a government agent who's hunting a gang of outlaws, but he did his job in a very dishonorable way:
- Captured, disarmed and then released an old and sick man, just to brutally execute him a few seconds later
- Using a gatling gun to spray on a tiny house with women and a little kid inside
- Kidnapping a mother right in front of the eyes of her 4 year old child (Tilly saying "I saved Jack" might've implied that the Pinktertons wanted to kidnap Jack, too...)
So as a resume, I agree with the fact that Milton was doing his job, but this is not an excuse for his cruel behavior and people have the right to dislike him for what he did.
