Beings general store merchant, Pearson could've just said He's only a humble man who sells goods to the citizens of Rhodes. However he is shown talking for a while not to mention he has an photo of the Van Der Linde Gang directly in the store seeing as he was simply a cook,married and with a family now he very well could've gave the agents the information needed on when John last visited in order to earn himself a way out of Agent Ross crosshairs.

I still find it rather foolish of Pearson to have his connection to the Van Der Linde gang front and center in Rhodes of all places.. considering the bad history the gang has there.. knowing Ross if he did find out Pearson wouldn't be able to put up much of an effort to fight off his mind games.

Edit: It's hard to read but you said you confused a costumer with either Ross or Archer. Both agents only stopped a stagecoach driver outside of Rhodes and questioned the passengers. You must have misremembered this part.

Yeah I rewatched it in slow motion to confirm. I thought Pearson followed them to the stagecoach but it was a different guy at the Coach.
