When the gang first moved out of the Grizzlies Dutch sent Micah and Lenny out to scout ahead, after the start of Chapter 2 you can always see them briefly at camp, it’s unique dialogue with Arthur asking them it it were any trouble, both of them saying it was nothing to worry about. (this dialogue may only trigger in 1.00)

*Fast forward to Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego*

When you reach the Grizzlies East you have a option to talk about either Sean or Micah. If you choose Micah, Arthur will ponder about his and Lenny’s whereabouts, about how it haven’t been that long since Ms. Grimshaw sent them out to scout ahead.

So first Dutch sent them to just scout ahead on the trail, then when they briefly returned back at camp, at some point Susan requested for them to go out scouting again.

Which means they never went to Strawberry right away, only when Hosea and Arthur went off hunting or even before that I could be wrong

I believe Micah took the second scouting trip as a opportunity to tie up loose ends and pay a couple of social calls, and just dragged Lenny along like anyone else.

Charismatic Leader or Savage Idealist?

Personally I believe at first Dutch had good intentions, he truly wanted to reform the country into a better way (his better way) but as time went on, technology became more advanced, more better-paid bounty hunters started to show, and civilization started to spread rapidly throughout the lawless west. Hence why the gang stopped giving money to the poor and helping folk, they needed to solely ensure their own survival at some point.

Dutch was always willing to go the bloodier route if things were to turn left, as he said to Hosea “I am willing to die for this if it’s that what it takes” also said to Arthur in Chapter 6 in a random event “I’ve never lied to you son”

This is my personal interpretation but I think he means in a sense that “you know things were going to get ugly sooner or later, so now it’s time to get even uglier”

Dutch only starts becoming more rash and ruthless after the failed Saint Denis Robbery, Hosea’s death and the constant stress and worrying about the Law catching up to them definitely took a toll on Dutch’s psyche.

Even takes a nihilistic route and journeyed the Wapiti Indians into their inevitable doom by enticing them to fight back against the U.S Army, it look like he was genuinely for the cause but in reality he was using them as a distraction for the Pinkerton’s and US Government

At that point he didn’t care about who got hurt or killed outside of his circle. He only cared for his and the gangs survival, his old philosophy of helping folk in need and reforming society has eroded, he only cares now for purging this country of the “Failures from Europe who came to reap vengeance on God’s last creation”

His god-complex clouded him from reality of their situation and ultimately led to the his and the gangs downfall, Micah immediately capitalized on his and started to feed his ego, because at this point Dutch is aware of how far he have gone, any time some one calls him out for it this he blatantly labels them as a non-believer, a second-guesser, a doubter, or a traitor.
