Does it look that way out in the world or just in the creator? The RDO creator has some decent options, but is accompanied by some glaring flaws. The lighting is probably one of the worst aspects of it, and even though I understand the appeal of an in universe mugshot, in terms of ease of use, its dimly lit room entirely detrimental.

This touches on the disconnect I had with the game which kept me from being able to fully engage in the main story and killed my drive to complete it.

Although there were aspects which reflected the honor system, there was the opportunity for a staggering difference between who Arthur was as a character, an outlaw loose and running, and who he could be via player choice during free roam. I was also high honor, and seeing each terrible choice being made one after the other was just gut wrenching, because it’s not who the character was when I was in control.

Maybe it’s the western setting or the slower, more scenic map exploration, but in Red Dead, I can never find myself playing the bad guy. Drop me off in GTA, and I completely understand being at the epicenter of mayhem and chaos… but not here. RDR2 is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played, with combat which is super satisfying and a huge improvement over past Rockstar games. But the game did not balance its story content with its open world content very well, and having to go back and forth between the two modes really killed the mood for me.

Yeah, but it’s all balancing or at least trying to. Regardless of which guns should be a little faster, there’s several which would realistically be muuuch slower. I would rather have the balancing to keep more guns viable. I want the romanticized western, not just the Yeehaw version of ARMA

I usually alternate between the Navy, LeMat, and Schofield. The LeMat is a gorgeous gun, and the shotgun is fun enough. The Navy hits like a freight train, and when prettied up, is still really nice looking. The Schofield is pretty sharp, and I probably enjoy the reload animation more than I should. A gun with a good extractor animation is always nice.

No? The LeMat, IRL, predated that No. 3 revolver. And even in game, that the Schofield is a top break revolver making use of cartridges, where the LeMat still has the loading lever on the front. So if you see any comparisons, you’re attributing copy cat to the wrong gun.

Cars? No. Might just be a bit of semantics, but you could not stretch too far beyond the horseless carriage appearance of super early, very limited vehicles.

I would not mind if there was another series added to the rotation of western (RD) and contemporary/80s nostalgia (GTA). But what I want from Red Dead is gunslinging and yeehawing. If they want a game set in the first half of the 1900s, that could be done as it’s own game.

RDO had a better atmosphere, deeper customization for the player, which I absolutely loved, and combat was significantly more fun. But it’s barely been supported, with relatively little in the way of major content pushes, compared to GTA’s never ending torrent of updates. And while this is purely a matter of tastes, RDO is a much slower paced game, with its shootouts being the bulk of the action, where GTA is so much more chaotic and flashy that it can more easily capture the attention of someone not willing to move point to point via scenic horse ride, even if the environments are some of the best looking things ever to grace gaming. I prefer RDO, but none of my group of friends did, so those of us who did play it, burned out more quickly than we did with GTA.

Probably a tie between the stories. For me, what really kneecaps the story is that Arthur is a character with motives and motivations other than just what we, the players, want him to have. So there was a jarring disconnect between the free roam, where Arthur was kind hearted white hat hero, or at least could be of the player wanted to be, and the main story where he completely turned heel. If it was tonally consistent, where it was all outlaw or all hero, maybe it would not have been that distracting. But it was the raid on the Strawberry jail to free shithead where I dropped the story. The lack of choice there, compared to the wild freedom elsewhere in game, ruined the experience for me. With GTA? You have a group of assholes on a course to continue being assholes. Wasn’t exactly compelling stuff, but it didn’t tease you with choice like RDR2 did.

^^No, collectibles still spawn in the world without the maps having to be purchased and used. The online collectible map was updated almost instantly after that update, and it still works. If you are buying maps, you are wasting money.

^There's no reason to ever buy maps. You do not need them for the loot to spawn.

Bounty Hunter is the only role to give back gold, even if it’s just little bits at a time, and it is a very combat oriented roll. Can that get old, yeah, but it’s at least something very active to do.

Trader pays fairly well, but it’s mostly geared towards hunting rather than combat, with the real exception being your actual money making activities which can draw in PvP players. Doesn’t always, rare that it does, but it’s something you should know up front.

Collector is the easiest, but the least active. Most of what you will be doing is going across the map riding, not interacting with anything but your objectives at the far end. With the online map, you can make shitloads of money fairly quickly and it’s pretty quick to level up.

Moonshiner actually has a story campaign and a few types of mostly combat oriented radiant missions. But if I’m not mistaken, you need trader to unlock this one.

And the Naturalist is not worth it unless you just have gold and time to burn. Boring content, no worthwhile rewards, and you’re stuck dealing with a very annoying NPC.

Moonshiner wins out for story content, having more than just an introductory sales pitch for the role or bounty mission loading screens dolled up as cinematics (even though they were well done, that’s essentially all they were).

Bounty Hunter has the best repeatable missions tasks. Not exactly innovative, but the core combat is fun, so having targets and rewards handed out is nice. Shame the role outfits are single suits and cannot be dismantled. Most of its fashion crosses the threshold of slightly too anime, but there’s a handful of items, like the boots for the introductory role outfit, that I would like to have on their own. At least some accessories are be picked up by themselves.

And collector is the best for making cash. Hell, when you count daily missions, it’s not bad for making gold either. No returns on collections, but it’s missions are often among the easiest to complete for the daily role challenges. All that adds up.

Saint Denis probably has less to worry about pollution and more to worry about filth, but it’s still likely the safer of the two when it comes to environmental effects on health.

The scarcely populated and arid conditions in New Austin would make it one of the harshest... but if you’re counting what killed me most, it would be navigating the various portions of the north east, where I would get impatient sticking to the roads and would try cutting through the woods. More times launched to my death by a tripped up horse there than maybe any other cause of death 😅

It is in need of new content. The naturalist role was not a good one to push out by itself, maybe as one of two or three roles it would have been fine, but not as stand alone content after a long drought.

It’s probably the least exciting generation, maybe ever just because it has a very weak line up of exclusives and many games are still launching for the Xbone and PS4 with crossplay available.

But I know for me, there was beginning to be a bit of too noticeable performance lag on the old console compared to friends who had bought a Bone S or X. Just consistently slower loading times, the occasional issue with games crashing, and for whatever (potentially unrelated) reason when sending game invites to the party, it would invite people to Red Dead even if we were in the lobby for something else entirely. And I have the second best Internet, up and down, of the group, leaving me to believe it was the aging hardware instead.

And so far, load times are dramatically improved with the Series X. Red Dead Online is much better getting into a lobby, for battle royale games I haven’t seen that ugly texture flicker when traversing the map too quickly in a vehicle, and for single player things many slow loading screens cruise on by in a couple seconds. Still happy with the purchase, but it definitely doesn’t feel as urgent an upgrade as it could have if there were more next gen exclusives.

I enjoy RDO when it’s given new content with a little more substance than just grind away. Had we gotten a more substantial or more interesting update than the Naturalist, I might not have taken a long break from the game but right now? It’s just a matter of waiting to see what’s in store for the game.

I loved the RDO campaign, and I’m hoping that story is picked up on again in future updates. I also though the Moonshiners content was pretty solid. And as far as these grind away, almost M(ini)MO games and service games, RDO is still probably at the top of the list. Guns feel good, combat is smooth, character customization is on point, the game is beautiful, and sometimes, animals even spawn. RDO is really pretty good, but if it does not see new meaningful updates, there’s not as much reason to go back to it.

Bears, at least the grizzlies... though I probably have died more often due to my horse spazzing out and failing to navigate terrain or deciding to run away.

It’s a very, very large map that’s slower to traverse and is obscured by a sort of fog of war that keeps distant players from appearing. There could be a whole mess of people just outta view or maybe you’re all alone.

Plus, there’s only a handful of areas to congregate or bottleneck players. Unlike GTA, where an entire server is living and working from the same handful of properties, RDO only has a small selection of properties and camps are not shared like buildings.
