World is full of disagreeable men... that's why you got all of us. To protect you from folk like them.
Arthur Morgan to Jack Marston

A Fisher of Men is a mission in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Mission Overview[]

Arthur does a favor for Abigail and takes Jack out on a fishing trip.

Story[]

Arthur speaks to Abigail in camp, who asks him to do something fun with Jack, as he seems rather bored. Arthur is reluctant at first, but soon agrees. He heads over to Jack and greets him as he is playing in the grass. He invites Jack to come fishing with him. Jack seems interested, so Arthur mounts his horse and lifts Jack up so they can go. On the way, Jack asks Arthur if they are going back to the gang's previous campsite near Blackwater, as he left his Penny Dreadful storybook there. Arthur tells they can't go back, but promises to find Jack a new storybook.

Once at the river, the two start fishing, during which Jack decides to pick some flowers and make something. Once Arthur catches at least three fish, Jack shows him a necklace he made out of the flowers, and two Pinkertons interrupt. They introduce themselves as Agents Milton and Ross. They explain that they were dispatched to find the gang after the robbery of one of Leviticus Cornwall's trains near Granite Pass, and that they want Dutch. Arthur tries to play innocent, but Milton says that he has already seen the "philosophy lesson" from Mac Callander, whom he had captured and tortured to death after the skirmish in Blackwater. Arthur is infuriated and exchanges hostile words with Milton before the two agents leave.

On the way back to camp, Jack asks why Arthur lied about Dutch and what the agents said about Mac. Arthur hopes that Mac is "fine where he is" and tells Jack to not worry about the "disagreeable men". After returning Jack to Abigail, Arthur heads over to Dutch to tell him about Milton and Ross and asks what they should do. Dutch believes that the Pinkertons want to scare them, and decides that they should all do nothing and just stay calm.

Gold Medal Objectives[]

  • After arriving at the river, catch a fish within 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  • Complete within 7 minutes and 20 seconds.

Deaths[]

  • Mac Callander - Killed by Agent Milton and the Pinkertons after being captured during the Blackwater Massacre. Milton tells Arthur about this, describing his death as "slow, but merciful".

Trivia[]

  • The name of the mission may be a reference to Matthew 4:19 and Mark 1:17, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
  • When asked why Abigail chose Arthur in the opening cutscene, she can give two different lines, saying that Jack likes him or because he does what he says. This is seemingly random and not determined by the player's honor level.
    • Furthermore, if Arthur doesn't immediately go to Jack and hangs around Abigail, she will comment on Jack's needs for entertainment, as well as his location.
  • If the player rides slow enough, Arthur will point out the local wildlife.
  • If Arthur tramples an animal with his horse, Jack will comment on it.
  • The player cannot crash their horse into objects such as trees, nor fall off cliffs in the typical fashion which would cause Arthur to fall off the horse, due to the fact Jack would also fall off, meaning the player cannot injure nor see Jack injured during the mission. Attempting to fall off a cliff while on horseback will immediately fail the mission as "Jack was frightened" before the player can become airborne.
  • If the player crosses the deeper part of the Dakota River with Jack on horseback the mission will fail stating that the player's horse has died.
  • During the mission, Agent Milton curses Arthur for rejecting the offer to hand Dutch over, saying of the Van der Linde gang, "You people venerate savagery, and you will die... savagely... all of you!" Arthur later remembers the last part of Milton's quote during "A Fork in the Road" if his Honor is low.
  • This mission can be considered an echo to the ending of Redemption. During the fishing trip, Jack meets Agent Ross for the first time, next to a river. Years later, in revenge of his father's death, Jack kills Agent Ross when the latter is hunting ducks next to a river, thus concluding the storyline of Redemption. Ross even foreshadows his own death when he says, "Enjoy your fishing, kid... while you still can."
  • After returning to camp and informing Dutch of Agent Milton and Ross, Hosea will also approach Arthur asking about the Pinkertons.
  • If the mission is started at night, a slightly different cutscene will occur.
  • In this mission, Agent Milton foreshadows his own death: when Arthur says, "Oh, we're all gonna die, Agent," he says in response, "Some of us sooner than others." In the final mission that the player plays as Arthur, Milton is killed by Abigail, thus dying before Arthur.
