You are scum who can become as angels, if you just put down the booze!
Abner Forsyth

Abner Forsyth is a minor character and Stranger featured in Red Dead Redemption. He appears in and initiates the Stranger side-mission "The Prohibitionist".

Background

Abner Forsyth is a preacher and a member of the Temperance Movement. He is seen outside the saloon in Blackwater, trying to persuade people to stop drinking and live life to the full, which highly annoys the owner of the saloon as Abner drives away his customers. According to The Blackwater Ledger, Forsyth is the leader of a group called the Supporters Of Temperance, an organization dedicated to the prohibition of alcohol.

Interactions

Forsyth is first encountered outside the saloon in Blackwater. Marston stops to listen to him, and Forsyth preaches that drinking is wrong and must be stopped. Marston disagrees, saying that he is "taking away our last freedom."

Later on, near the docks, Marston is halted by Oliver Philips, the owner of the saloon. He tells Marston that Forsyth is scaring away his customers. He proposes that Marston should kill Forsyth, and if he does Philips will reward him.

If Marston kills Forsyth, he will receive a small bounty. Once that is evaded, Philips will reward Marston with a small sum of money and announce that the price of drinks and temporary safehouses has been halved, which applies all across the map.

If Marston warns Forsyth that his life is in danger, Forsyth thanks Marston and gives him a small sum of cash, before leaving the town. Afterwards, when Marston returns to Philips, Philips is irate and tells him that the price of drinks and temporary safehouses has doubled, which applies all across the map.

Trivia

  • According to Philips, Abner is in the pocket of Jeremiah Somerset, a wealthy industrialist who wants to see the public consumption of alcohol banned in the state so he can make a fortune selling personal liquor distillers.
  • If the player has the fame level of "Gunslinger", then the doubled price for drinks means sparing Forsyth will not affect the player.
  • The initials of the group he represents, Supporters of Temperance, form the word "sot", an archaic Scottish word for a drunkard or alcoholic.
