Baylock is a supporting character featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.

He served as the mount of Micah Bell throughout 1899.

History[]

Background[]

It is unknown for how long Micah had Baylock prior to the events of the game, though it seems the two had developed a bit of a bond from the start.

Events of Red Dead Redemption 2[]

Colter Chapter[]

Shortly after the Blackwater Massacre, the Van der Linde gang fled into the mountains alongside Baylock, who went out with Micah on a scouting mission in which they located a ranch not too far from where the gang decided to set up camp. The two run into Dutch van der Linde on The Count and Arthur Morgan on Taima, and lead them to Adler Ranch, where he, Taima, and The Count are hitched nearby. A shootout occurs involving members of the O’Driscoll gang, and after they are dealt with, Micah brings the horses closer to the house. Following Micah torching the house, the gang is forced to ride back to Colter until the storm clears. Baylock is then seen being ridden to a hideout for the O’Driscolls, where he is left nearby with the rest of the horses. Lenny Summers and Javier Escuella retrieve him and the rest, right before the gang rides back into Colter. Micah rides him alongside other members of the gang to rob a train, in which they stop at a ledge near some tracks that are supposed to blow up. This fails, leading to a few members of the gang chasing after the train on foot and the rest riding up to meet with them after the train has stopped. Following a few bonds being stolen from the train, Micah rides him back to camp.

Horseshoe Overlook Chapter[]

The gang then departs from the Grizzlies shortly thereafter and him, Micah, Lenny, and Maggie are sent to go out scouting by Dutch. Micah ends up getting arrested during a skirmish with an O’Driscoll, and during “Blessed are the Meek?”, Micah is rescued by Arthur and Baylock is seen waiting for him as he massacres the town. They escape in a shootout, and after the smoke has cleared Baylock gets spooked by a lightning strike and rears, which Micah does not pay any mind to. The two ride away and Micah sets up a remote camp in West Elizabeth to look for leads. Arthur finds them at this camp, and they head off to rob a stagecoach. Micah rears up Baylock before chasing after the coach. Micah gets on the coach, and after surviving an ambush from the O’Driscoll boys and taking the coach’s money, the two depart back to camp.

Clemens Point Chapter[]

The gang soon thereafter relocates to Clemens Point. Later, Micah decides to head out with The Count, Dutch, as well as Arthur and his horse to try and make peace with the O’Driscolls. When this fails, Micah and him ride away back to camp. Micah and him then go alongside Ennis, Sean MacGuire, Brown Jack, and Bill Williamson into Rhodes, where, upon Arthur and his horse arriving, a shootout occurs and afterwards Micah departs on Baylock.

Saint Denis Chapter[]

In searching for Jack, the gang heads to Shady Belle and Micah rides Baylock during an optional stagecoach robbery. Sometime after this, Micah takes him alongside other members of the gang to go and rob the Lemoyne National Bank. After the robbery was found to be a setup, it all ends poorly, and he does not appear again for a while.

Guarma Chapter[]

He is seen again at the gang’s new camp in Lakay, meaning he was likely recovered by members of the gang, though he is not ridden during this chapter.

Beaver Hollow Chapter[]

The gang then goes to Beaver Hollow, and Micah and Baylock can be seen at the start and end of “The Delights of Van Horn”. Micah rides him again during “Our Best Selves”, where, upon the gang robbing a train, they ride back into camp to start packing it up. Micah rides away on Baylock to try and escape from Pinkertons during “Red Dead Redemption”, but he is never seen again after this.

Character[]

Personality[]

Baylock is one of the more docile horses in the gang. Despite this, he seems to be anxious and jumpy, making him harder to approach and to pet. He rears up with Micah following a crash of thunder, though it seems he was quick to calm down following his rider’s nonchalant reaction to the situation. Despite Micah’s true nature, he seems to at least somewhat care about Baylock, possibly due to his ability to use him to his advantage.

Appearance[]

Baylock is a Missouri Fox Trotter with blue eyes and a unique black coat with a bald face marking. He also has white socks on all four of his legs.

Mission Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • With his black body and white face, Baylock bears a striking resemblance to the Dark Horse from Red Dead Redemption, which would spawn if the player's Honor was low.
  • Baylock may have been named in reference to the 1976 film The Omen. In the film, a nanny named Mrs. Baylock is a disciple of Hell sent to watch over the child Damien, who is revealed to be the Antichrist.
  • If Baylock dies, Micah will react with genuine shock, anger, and sadness.[1]
