Black Belle was born Maybelle Elizabeth Colter. Following her first robbery at Rhodes, Bell became a infamous member of the Colter Tobin Gang, which she is the sole surviving member of. It is known that she was married six times to six gentlemen and never divorced one of them.

- Her name is an obvious reference to famed outlaw Belle Starr, nicknamed "The Bandit Queen" while based in Oklahoma and Missouri. Black Belle's clothing also heavily resembles Starr's.
- Her rowdy personality may also be inspired by Calamity Jane, a famous frontierswoman, also born in Missouri.
