He’s a drunk, miserable bastard, but… he loves that horse.
Arthur Morgan in “The Aftermath of Genesis” about Bill Williamson’s bond with Brown Jack.

Brown Jack is a supporting character featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.

He served as the mount of Bill Williamson throughout 1899.

History[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Brown Jack prior to the events of the game, but it seems him and Bill had developed a strong bond by this point.

Events of Red Dead Redemption 2[]

Colter Chapter[]

Brown Jack is ridden by Bill on their way into the Grizzlies following the Blackwater Massacre, and the Van der Linde gang decide to take residence at a nearby abandoned town named Colter. Sometime after the return of John Marston into the camp, Brown Jack is ridden by Bill into another abandoned town, which served as the hideout for the O’Driscoll gang. Bill leaves him nearby to head into the town, and a shootout occurs. Following this, he is retrieved by Javier Escuella and Lenny Summers alongside the rest of the horses. Bill places his newly found explosives on his back, and the gang heads back to Colter. He later takes him to a ledge to plant some dynamite so that the gang can rob a train, but after this fails, a few members of the gang go on foot to stop it. Brown Jack and Bill meet up with them, after which they ride back to camp, having made off with a few stolen bonds.

Horseshoe Overlook Chapter[]

The gang decides to set up camp at Horseshoe Overlook, and Brown Jack can be found here. During “Paying a Social Call”, Bill takes him to Six Point Cabin following a lead alongside Arthur Morgan and his horse, John Marston and Old Boy, and a former O’Driscoll named Kieran Duffy. He is hitched nearby as a firefight takes place, and is shortly thereafter ridden back to camp.

Clemens Point Chapter[]

Later, the gang makes its way to Clemens Point where Brown Jack stays for a while. He and The Count accompany Dutch, Bill, Arthur, and a deputy to arrest some moonshiners. He and The Count are hitched nearby, and following this, Bill departs on a wagon and Brown Jack makes his way back to camp. Brown Jack is taken out by Bill during “An Honest Mistake” to rob a wagon. After escaping in a shootout, she is sent away while the gang hides in a barn. Bill gets on him to rob the Valentine Bank alongside Karen Jones, Old Belle, Lenny Summers, Maggie, Arthur, and his horse. After arriving in Valentine, the bank is robbed and a shootout takes place in which the law pursues the gang for a while before deciding to give up the chase when a train blocks their path. Bill and him then go alongside Ennis, Sean MacGuire, Micah Bell, and Baylock into Rhodes, where, upon Arthur and his horse arriving, a shootout occurs. Afterwards, Bill departs to go bury Sean on Brown Jack, who carries his corpse. Optionally, Bill will take Brown Jack to go and rob a stage before making off with the money and heading back to camp. Bill rides him up to the Braithwaite Manor in “Blood Feuds, Ancient and Modern” following Jack Marston’s disappearance.

Saint Denis Chapter[]

In the next chapter, the gang heads to Shady Belle. Bill does not ride Brown Jack in this chapter except during an optional stagecoach robbery with Micah, Baylock, and Arthur as well as his horse.

Guarma Chapter[]

Brown Jack is then seen at Lakay, though he is not ridden during this chapter.

Beaver Hollow Chapter[]

Afterwards, when the gang goes to Beaver Hollow, Bill rides him during “The Delights of Van Horn” into Van Horn, before leaving him and eventually he returns back to camp. Later, Bill rides him as the gang leads an attack on a Cornwall Factory, before the two ride back into camp. Bill then rides him during “Our Best Selves”, and he as well as John jumps from him in order to rob the train. He then gets back to him, and heads into camp to start packing up. When Bill escapes from the Pinkertons on Brown Jack in “Red Dead Redemption”, he is never seen again.

Character[]

Personality[]

Brown Jack may be big, but he is also quite docile for his size and he and Bill still managed to develop a bond despite Bill's character.

Appearance[]

He is a large brown horse with black legs and feathering, and his hair is kept unkempt which shields his brown eyes.
