—Buford Ackley, while in combat |
Buford Ackley is a minor character featured in Red Dead Redemption.
Background[]
Buford is a professional lawman who operates in the New Austin region. He is primarily found stationed in Armadillo, MacFarlane's Ranch, and Rathskeller Fork.
Interactions[]
Buford can most often be found wandering around MacFarlane's Ranch on patrol or putting up wanted posters. When Marston successfully completes a Nightwatch job there, Buford will pay out his reward. Buford can also be seen patrolling in Armadillo, where he oversees the transfer of captured bounties while also paying Marston for delivering them. He has a similar role at Rathskeller Fork. However, if Marston has a high enough bounty, Buford will join other lawmen in tracking him to multiple locations around New Austin.
Buford also appears in an occasional random encounter, where he will be shown to have captured two fleeing criminals. Not having enough room on his horse to deliver both men to jail, he offers Marston a share of the reward money if he agrees to help. Marston can also choose to kill him and free the prisoners. Either choice will affect his Honor.

Trivia[]
- Buford's character model is available in the Outfitter under the name Colby Oats.
- Due to his often being found there, it is possible that Buford is the appointed sheriff of MacFarlane's Ranch. However, since Claude Banfield is also present, it may simply be that Buford splits his time serving as a lawman between the ranch, Armadillo, and Rathskeller Fork.
- Buford makes an appearance in the Undead Nightmare trailer, during which he manages to draw his pistol and kill a Bolter that leaps at him.
- Buford's boots are the exact same kind as the US Army Uniform boots. They are almost the same kind as the boots Harold MacDougal wears, strangely enough.
