The Confederate States Army is a disbanded faction mentioned in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online.
History[]
Background[]
The Confederate States Army were the main fighting forces of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, fighting against the United States to win the independence of southern states and uphold and expand the institution of slavery. Many of the southern states, including Lemoyne, would secede from the Union in response to Abraham Lincoln winning the Election of 1860.
On February 28, 1861, the Provisional Confederate Congress passed an act to create a provisional, volunteer army. On March 6th, a regular, permanent army was organized. In the timeline of Red Dead Redemption 2, the Confederate States Army partook in a number of battles across the nation.
In March 30th, 1863, a Confederate charge led by Major Hobart Crawley was intercepted by Union soldiers, resulting in thousands of Confederate casualties, with Crawley being the sole survivor. The battle was memorialized with a statue in Rhodes. Later that year on May 8th, the Confederates, led by General Quincy T. Harris, launched an ambush on Fort Brennand under the cover of night, massacring the Union garrison stationed there.
The following year in 1864, the massive Battle of Scarlett Meadows takes place at Bolger Glade. Despite suffering massive amounts of casualties, Confederate troops successfully repelled the Union offensive. Quincy T. Harris also played a role in this battle.
The Civil War would come to an end in 1865, with General Robert E. Lee surrendering to the Union Army at Appomattox Courthouse. Lemoyne and other southern states are subsequently readmitted into the Union, with the Confederate States Army being effectively dissolved.
Events in Red Dead Redemption 2[]
Though the Confederate States Army had been disbanded for over thirty years by the events of the game, there remain several characters and factions that are related to the Confederacy. The Lemoyne Raiders are a gang made up of many ex-Confederate soldiers and disenfranchised young men, holding bitter hatred against the north and the belief that the war was still going on. The Ku Klux Klan was also created as a violent white supremacist group that was dwindling by 1899, although they can be encountered in a few random events across Lemoyne. Many high ranking officials of the Confederate Army resided in Saint Denis in 1899, attending galas and living in high society.
