Discoverable and Named Corpses are corpses as well as minor characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 that do not appear alive during the course of the game.
Named Corpses[]
The following corpses have either an implied or confirmed name:
| Photo | Name | Description | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Annette, Harriot, and Claude | According to a letter, Annette and Claude had an affair together, which was forgiven by Claude's wife, Harriot. Annette still wished to be with Claude and started following him and leaving him packages, which prompted him to write to her and tell her to stop. This angered Annette, so she broke into his house with a knife and presumably stabbed him and Harriot to death before walking outside of the house, slumping down next to the wagon and shooting herself in the head. | Robard Farm | ||
| Anthony | He is mentioned in a newspaper article as being an alchemist who has nearly synthesized gold from any base metal, and lived at the Alchemist's House in New Austin. Upon the player approaching the house for the first time, it will explode and burst into flames, killing Anthony instantly and leaving his charred corpse behind. | Alchemist's House | While incredibly difficult to notice, his model features breasts. This is likely due to an oversight. | |
| Biscuit | A lady from Emerald Ranch claims to have raised Biscuit since he was just a foal, and recounts a story about how he once bit someone's ear clean off after they tried to mess with her. Arthur or John come across Biscuit laying dead on the roadside, after which his owner will walk up to them and say that he up and died on her. The player can then choose to escort her back to Emerald Ranch in which she will tell the player more about Biscuit, and Arthur/John expresses sympathy in her having lost him. Sometime after the two part ways, Biscuit will disappear and never be seen again. | Near Emerald Ranch | A glitch can be performed in which Biscuit will be found alive, allowing the player to bond with him and take him as their own. | |
|
Brother Rodolfo | Rodolfo is the Spanish subject of a point of interest in New Austin. He was a Jesuit Missionary who carries a letter dated 1797 from Cardinal Blanco. The letter reveals that Rodolfo had become disillusioned with the church, and traveled alone despite warnings to the perilous western frontier where he died of unknown causes. | Near the shore of the Sea of Coronado | |
|
Desirée LaFlamme | She is a famous stunt woman, appearing on posters for her stunt of jumping off Donner Falls in only a barrel. This feat would end up going wrong one day, however, and her corpse can be found near the waterfall with the broken remains of the barrel. It is a point of interest. | Near Donner Falls | Despite dying in 1899, her posters are still present in 1907. |
| Eddie and Glen | These two boys lived at Clawson's Rest alongside their mother. At some point, according to a letter, some men stole their money and their mother left to get it back, leaving them in the house with the door locked and the windows boarded shut with instructions to not open the door for anybody. They were left with four days of food and water, but likely died of dehydration or starvation as their mother never returned. | Clawson's Rest | In the beta, it was originally possible to save the kids and bring them to the sheriff. | |
| Elijah | Not much is known about Elijah other than that he was a runaway slave. The player can come across his corpse and a letter to his Uncle Lewis, which is dated on September 6, 1861 and can be looted from him. In Elijah's letter to his Uncle Lewis, Elijah states that he escaped from the Pennington family, but was eventually captured by a presumed slave catcher in Rhodes. He states that the catcher took him to him to a shack called Old Harry Fen. He was chained inside there for three months and was treated poorly. He was able to escape the shack and was planning to head to Canada where his Uncle Lewis and his cousin Samuel lived before his untimely death near the shore. | On the shore near Old Harry Fen | ||
|
Felix Hawley | Hawley was a world famous champion ice skater who lived at Planters Baun, and earned himself a mass produced cigarette card for his talents. He also served in the army at some point, but his career ended in 1874 when an accident took his right leg. He later died, and his grave is a point of interest as it has been dug up and defaced, with the words "NO ICE IN HELL" painted over it; suggesting that someone carried extreme disdain towards him. | Planters Bawn | |
|
Fredrick Mitchell | He was a legislator for the state of Lemoyne. His corpse is found by Arthur Morgan and Archibald MacGregor's posse on the way to disrupt a moonshine still operated by the Braithwaite family. They come across a ransacked carriage with the corpses of numerous coachman that came from Saint Denis, including Mitchell, who Archibald deduces to have been killed by the Lemoyne Raiders. | Near Bayou Nwa | |
|
Garfield | Garfield was a Confederate soldier serving under the command of General Quincy T. Harris in Lemoyne by 1864. At some point prior to the Civil War, he fell in love with Martha, who was a northerner. In his letter to Martha, he details his regret in having joined up with the Confederate Army and the loss of morale among his fellow soldiers, as well as an upcoming uphill battle against the Union Army and fears of dying. He was killed at the Battle of Scarlett Meadows near Bolger Glade for apparent attempted desertion during the battle. | Bolger Glade | He has two red chevrons, indicating that he was an artillery soldier and a corporal. His corpse may disappear if the player sets up camp near it. |
|
James "Jim" Peyton | Jim was a resident at Lenora View and married Mildred Barr on May 18th, 1899. According to a note at the cabin, Jim left on a wagon with his wedding certificate and a photo of her to go pick up Mildred but crashed over a cliff during the process which resulted in his death. Eventually, a stranger notices the crash and reports it to the sheriff. | Near Lenora View | Though it's assumed that he crashed coming from Lenora View, the tracks going over the cliff lead from the nearby Taxidermist House of Miss L. Hobbs. If the player takes his note, Mildred will write to him with worry that he had abandoned her. |
|
Madame Mozelle | In 1850, she started a brothel on the side of the road near Van Horn. Her skeletal corpse remains on the front porch of the establishment for unknown reasons, though the lock box underneath her contains a rare female fertility statue. | Roadside Brothel | |
|
Martha | She was a northern woman living at Martha's Swain who fell in love with the confederate soldier, Garfield. In 1864, despite fighting in the war, Garfield made plans to desert the army to be with her but was killed in the process, being marked as a traitor. Her cause of death is unknown. | Martha's Swain | |
| Mr. Varley | Varley was the owner of an oil derrick that was desired by Cornwall, Kerosene & Tar, according to a letter. He was threatened with being undercut by the bigger company, but still refused and ended up dying when parts of the derrick collapsed on him. | Oil Derrick | It's speculated that Cornwall's men may have had something to do with his demise. | |
| Mrs. Claypole | Claypole was a resident of Rhodes who died of unknown causes, being buried near the church with her diamond broach. The undertaker's assistant Gwyn Hughes knew about this, and decided to pay off his debts to a loanshark in "Money Lending and Other Sins IV" by digging up her grave and stealing the broach. | Rhodes Cemetery | ||
|
Parker | He was a fraternity member who received a letter from his frat brother Chuck daring him to spend an entire evening in Night Folk territory, with the promise of a $50 reward for surviving. The Night Folk ended up killing him, and hung his corpse in the swamps to use as a distraction for future victims. | Bayou Nwa | |
| Percival | Percival is a taxidermy raccoon owned by Miss Hobbes, who has modeled him playing tennis. She mentions him in a letter, but doesn't know why she gave him that name. | Taxidermist House | ||
| Ri | A newspaper article talks about a sculptor creating a carving of the face of his wife in the mountains with just a hammer and chisel. Upon reaching the location, the man has hung himself next to it as it is revealed in a letter that his wife cheated on him with a french artist while he was busy making the monument which caused him to feel worthless and hang himself next to his creation. | Right above Moonstone Pond | His signature at the end of the letter reveals his name. | |
|
Zhou Yi | According to a letter from his uncle Zhou Wei, he came to America to look for his cousin Zhou Ming. His uncle blames Ming's wife Zhi Ruo for convincing him to go to America to make a fortune. Wei also considers that Ming's desire to prove himself independent of his family responsibilities in Shanghai and Hong Kong is neither admirable nor honorable. At some point during Yi's journey he perished, likely due to the harsh conditions of New Austin's desert. The fact he's in a fetal position indicates he likely died of starvation or dehydration. | Near Armadillo | He wears a chinese skull cap that the player can take, and speaks Mandarin. There is another man living in El Matadero with the surname Zhou in 1911/1914 but whether or not they are related is unknown. |
Discoverable Corpses[]
Discoverables are interesting oddities around the map that are marked as such internally by the game. All points of interests are considered discoverables, so they won't be listed here:
| Dead Man and Sheep | In one of the sheds at Guthrie Farm, a dead man with his pants down and a black sheep wearing a bow can be found dead on the floor. Given that the workers do not react to the bodies, it is likely they were killed for engaging in bestiality. | Guthrie Farm | The man's history and origins are unknown. The sheep has a gold wedding ring that can be looted, and another living black sheep with a tattered bow can be found nearby. | |
| Annabella's Lover | At Vetter's Echo, a grizzly bear has burst into a man's cabin and killed him. It appears the man was obsessed over his lover, Annabella, as he wrote many letters asking her to come live with him. | Vetter's Echo | ||
|
Pirate Sword Skeleton | In a boat near Saint Denis there is a skeleton that has been impaled by a broken pirate sword that the player can take. The skeleton's origins are unknown. | Northwest of Shady Belle | The internal name for the boat and skeleton heavily implies that the original intention was to give the player a pirate gun instead of a sword. |
| Pirate Burying Treasure with Gator | Underneath a bridge, there is a skeleton with a shovel next to a treasure chest, and a gator that appears to have died after killing the man. The chest is relatively empty, only containing a few gold coins. | Bridge underneath the "B" in Bluewater Marsh | The corpse model is an edited version of an unused Guarma corpse, possibly implying some relation between the two. | |
| Buck Pile | Three bucks can be found on top of each other in the woods. The reasoning for this is unknown. | Northeast of the Appleseed Timber Company's logging area | ||
| Man in the Flattened Cabin | At Moonstone Pond there is a house which has been destroyed by a fallen tree. Inside, a man is crushed underneath the tree and rubble from the cabin. | Flattened Cabin | ||
| Lightning Victims | It appears a bolt of lightning struck the wagon of some settlers, causing the cows to crash into a tree and burning the surrounding area. The corpses will begin to decay over time. | Near Rio Del Lobo Rock | This is the only instance of any creature besides horses being shown to pull wagons in the game. | |
| Dead Miner | In Beryl's dream, it is possible to detonate the dynamite plunger inside the mine and clear away rubble from a cave in that happened previously. Inside, there is a single miner with a Wide-Blade knife in his back next to his miner's helmet that the player can take, and a gold nugget. | Beryl's Dream | Give that the man has a knife in his back and there are no other corpses in the mine, it's likely the cave in was deliberately done in order to hide the murder of the miner. | |
|
Giant Snake | The Giant Snake is a massive, reddish-orange serpent lying dead in a tree south of Pleasance. The corpse cannot be removed from the tree, and cannot be skinned. | South of Pleasance | The Giant Snake might be inspired by The Peninsula Python or by "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil" from "Garden of Eden". It's also possible this is a reference to the Giant Python of Boston "Helltown", Ohio, as the ghost town of nearby Pleasance is based on Boston. Or, possibly the Congo Snake, an allegedly 50ft-long snake that was supposedly photographed in 1959. |
| Dead Chain Gang | It appears a chain gang escaped from captivity at one point, but all of the prisoners died of unknown causes in the same spot. | Right under the "S" in Kamassa River | ||
| Limpany Corpses | There are three corpses in Limpany. Two are prisoners who were likely left behind after the fire, and the third is located next to an outhouse but the corpse doesn't look charred so his cause of death is unknown. | Limpany | The prisoners may be a reference to Mr. Black and Mr. White, given they are both prisoners and have the same hair models. Though, this could just as well be a coincidence. | |
|
Man Fighting Bear | A man can be found underneath a dead grizzly bear with his face torn to shreds, and an Antler Knife stuck inside the bear. The man was killed while also successfully killing the bear. | Northwest of the Stilt Shack | |
| Panoramic Map Couple and Horse | In various locations in the Grizzlies a frozen couple can be found next to their deceased horse. They are holding a map that appears to depict Mount Shann, though the purpose of it is unknown. | Various locations in the Grizzlies | There is a beta model of the couple that appears to be very old. The exact purpose of the panoramic map is a mystery, though many theories exist about it. The horse reuses the exact model and textures from John's horse, but is covered in snow to obscure this detail. | |
| Frozen Cattle | Thirteen frozen cows can be found near Spider Gorge, though the exact reason for this is unknown. They all died at relatively the same time and probably succumbed to the cold weather. | Directly below Spider Gorge | The cows use beta textures and models that are nearly identical to the cows seen in Red Dead Redemption. They were domesticated on account of wearing bells. | |
| Hani's Bethel Cult | In Hani's Bethel, there appears to be a cult of skeletons each lying on the beds wearing boots with a single leader sitting up front. This is the spot where a UFO appears, so it is likely the cult's origins are supernatural. | Hani's Bethel | The eleven corpses lying there are possibly a loose reference to the Heaven's Gate Cult, which participated in a mass suicide in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following Comet Hale–Bopp on March 19–20, 1997. Like Heaven's Gate, whose cultists became famous due to most of them wearing the same brand of shoes when their bodies were found, Hani's Bethel cultists also are all using the same type of boots. | |
| Man Hanging from Hearse | Near MacFarlane's ranch is a crashed hearse with a man hanging from the back. The reason for this is unknown, and the coffin has been emptied for reasons that are also unknown. | North of MacFarlane's Ranch | It's speculated that this hanging may have something to do with vampires due to the gothic appearance of the hearse and coffin, the missing corpse, and hanged man. | |
| Stuffed Gorilla | This gorilla was likely stuffed by Miss Hobbs, but fell off during transit and was left behind. | North of the Taxidermist House | It's possible to shoot the head and limbs off. In the beta, the gorilla had textured eyes though in the final game they are simply blacked out. It's possible the model was originally intended for a living gorilla based off the texture names and some of the textures lacking seams. | |
| Water Diviners | Water Diviners (also known as dowsers) are people who believe they can use an apparatus to locate water, ores, or other things buried under the ground. These diviners appear to have taken their role very seriously, wearing religious robes and blue sashes though all of them died of unknown causes. One of the men has a small jewelry bag that can be looted. | Directly above the "o" in Cholla Springs | The dowser's location is near Pleasance House, which is the location of the Red Dead Redemption mission "Water and Honesty" which features a dowser interested in purchasing the land there. This is likely a reference to that mission. | |
|
Blackwater Athletics Club | A newspaper article reports on the deaths of ten members of the Blackwater Athletics Club who went for a run in Tall Trees. A pit with their corpses with bags over their heads and their limbs severed to form the shape of a "B" can be found, though their murderer is unknown. | Directly above Tanner's Reach | The killer has been speculated to be Edmund Lowry Jr., due to the fact that both the grave and his basement use the same limb models. Despite this, the same limb model is also used at one of the Skinner Brother's camps. It is possible Rockstar simply repurposed that particular model as a filler object. It's unlikely that a single man could overpower the entire team of athletes, and the "B" nearby made out of the limbs of the athletes does not seem to have any relevance to Lowry whatsoever. Based on the location of the murder, it is likely the Skinner Brothers had a hand in it which would explain the "B", although this is unconfirmed. |
|
John's Bay Mare | Just before the start of the game, she and John were out on a scouting mission following the Blackwater Massacre, but they were attacked by wolves and she did not make it. During "Enter, Pursued by a Memory", Arthur and Javier come across her remains and Javier remarks that John had at least been riding her since Blackwater. | On a snowy mountain in "Enter, Pursued by a Memory". | While her breed is unknown, the markings she uses are actually identical to the Cleveland Bay. Her model and textures are reused for the panoramic map horse and avalanche horses, and there exists an unused dead horse model resembling her which was cut from the game. Also cut from the game was a Silver Bay Thoroughbred wearing the same saddle that can be spawned in using cheats. The most likely reason for their exclusion from the game is that static models are less likely to cause bugs. |
