Duchesses and other Animals

Duchesses and other Animals is a Stranger mission featured in Red Dead Redemption 2. The quest becomes available during Chapter 4.

Story[]

After being saved from choking on a nut at the party during "The Gilded Cage" story mission, the player can find Algernon at his greenhouse in Saint Denis and initiate the first part of the mission by talking to him.

Note - The player does not actually have to save him from choking, another NPC steps in after talking to the mayor. His quest will become available regardless.

Walkthrough[]

There are a total of 6 parts for this mission. Each part has the player collecting various exotic plants and animals for Algernon.

Note: This stranger mission can take a while to complete, so to complete faster be sure to collect the bird plumes and alligator eggs first.

Part 1 - Simply talk to Algernon and he will give you the first list of items that he will need.

Part 2 - Towards the end of the cutscene, Algernon mentions that he needs 15 Egret plumes and 15 orchids. Once the cutscene ends, inspecting the list reveals that Algernon needs:

All of which can be found in Bayou Nwa. Upon completion of this task, Algernon will reward the player with 100 dollars.

Part 3 - Upon returning to Algernon, the player is given a second list of items. These include:

20 Heron Plumes (found in Bayou Nwa)
7 Lady Slipper Orchid (found in Big Valley)
10 Moccasin Orchid (found in Roanoke Ridge)

Upon completion of this task, Algernon will reward the player with 125 dollars.

Part 4 - The third list of items include:

All can be found in and around Bayou Nwa. Upon completion of this task, Algernon will reward the player with 150 dollars.

Part 5 - The player will need to find:

30 Spoonbill Plumes (found in Bayou Nwa)
10 Rat Tail Orchid (found in Bluewater Marsh and Bayou Nwa)
5 Spider Orchid (found in Bayou Nwa)
5 Night scented Orchid (found south of Braithwaite Manor)

Upon completion of this task, Algernon will reward the player with 175 dollars.

Part 6 - For the final part of this mission, the player will need to find:

5 Clamshell Orchid (found east of Caliga Hall)
5 Queen's Orchid (found in Bayou Nwa)
10 Sparrow Egg Orchid (found in northern Roanoke Ridge near a Hermit location)
5 Dragon's Mouth Orchid (found in Grizzlies East)

Upon completion of this task, Algernon will reward the player with $200.

Once the last items are given to Algernon, he will give the player an Exotic Hat and a unique revolver named Algernon's Revolver.

Trivia[]

Algernon's request for flowers is a reference to Daniel Keyes' short story Flowers for Algernon.
The Rare Orchids Order can be taken from any post office (as a poster on a wall, similar to a Wanted poster; not as a piece of mail) after completing the stranger mission. The player must take the note before saving and loading the game in the next time because if the player saves and loads the game before taking the note, the note will disappear after loading for unknown reasons. At the Saint Denis post office, it is posted outside, next to one of the side entrances.
This mission is the only way to remove Orchids from the player's inventory, as they cannot be sold to anyone nor can they be manually dropped from the satchel.
