You had your chance to surrender, boy. I ain't taking prisoners anymore.
Earl Hollingsworth during combat

Earl Hollingsworth is a minor character featured in Red Dead Redemption.

History[]

Background[]

Earl is a decorated U.S. marshal and one of several federal officers subordinated to the Bureau of Investigation in their efforts to apprehend Dutch van der Linde. He can usually be found stationed at the Bureau's temporary offices in the Blackwater Police Department, awaiting instructions or dealing with mundane office duties.

Events of Red Dead Redemption[]

Earl plays a small role in the mission "Great Men are Not Always Wise", in which he is a member of the Bureau posse involved in a shootout with Dutch's men at Bearclaw Camp. Earl is also among the officers who assist Edgar Ross in his raid on Beecher's Hope during "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed".

He may sometimes appear in a random encounter as the sole survivor of a crashed prison wagon. With his partner dead and his leg all busted up, he will ask the player to either kill the fleeing convicts or return them to him for execution. Helping him earns the player Honor.

If Marston kills at least twenty lawmen while his bounty is active, Earl and his fellow marshals will track him to all possible locations around West Elizabeth and New Austin with shoot-to-kill orders.

Quotes[]

Hey, you! A whole mess of prisoners just broke loose. Someone's gotta round those varmints up, or gun 'em down.
Earl Hollingsworth asking the player to capture two criminals
I can't thank you enough, son. You just did a damn fine thing.
Earl Hollingsworth before executing the two criminals

Trivia[]

  • Earl's character model is available in the Outfitter under the name Leon Cornwell.
  • Given that he has a beard and dresses in a vest and tie, Earl has a somewhat similar look to another U.S. marshal, Marion Freel.
  • Stanley Palmer may sometimes gossip while playing poker about how Hollingsworth's daughter does not like men, implying she is a lesbian. Given that homosexuality would have been far less socially acceptable back then, it is likely that Earl is on bad terms with his daughter.
