  • Crying Swamp Lady Encounter (Left 4 Dead video game series, 2008-2009)
  • Dead Bear & Hunter Encounter (northwest of Hanging Dog Ranch, a dead bear can be found laying on top of a dead hunter, referencing the famous bear attack scene from the 2015 film, The Revenant)

  • Mysterious Hill Home (The Lord of The Rings movie trilogy)
  • Letter from a lady travelling by stagecoach outside Rhodes (a reference to JK Rowling, a British author who wrote Harry Potter novel series and the fact that her novel got rejected by 12 publishers)
  • The Course of True Love II (Arthur will say "How many gazebos they need" when approaching the wrong gazebo, a throwback to an iconic joke from The Simpsons)
  • Exploding House (a small house found in the north of Tumbleweed, will suddenly explode the very moment it is discovered. this encounter could be a reference to a similar encounter that happens in the video game Fallout 4)
  • Time Traveler (the 1990 sci-fi film Back to the Future III or H.G. Wells' book The Time Machine, 1895)
  • 0451 (after John's house is built in the epilogue, wooden planks are laid out spelling the numbers "0451", a reference to a code that has appeared in many games since its first use in 1994 video game System Shock)
  • H. Blake Fishing Tackle Maker (in Saint Denis, there's a fishing store owned by H. Blake, clearly a reference to Henry Blake from the TV show M*A*S*H)
  • Sleepy Hollow (outside of Appleseed Timber Company, two dead bodies can be found laying on the ground, with one missing a head while the other one having its face smashed. one of the bodies has a letter from Professor Crane. This is a reference to Ichabod Crane, the protagonist of the short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.)

  • Cave Hermit (As the Cave Hermit is named "The Philosopher" in-game, he can also be a reference to Plato's Allegory of the Cave)
  • Tempest Rim & Caliban's Seat (Both locations could have received their names from William Shakespeare's play The Tempest)
  • Jesuit Missionary (The Jesuit that died before reaching his Mission in New Austin was probably inspired by Moses and the Promised Land from the Bible)
  • Drunk Beggar (a drunk beggar, who will tell the player about a backroom poker game in Saint Denis, will sometimes say "La la la... get my... money right." This might be a reference to Kanye West's song Can't Tell Me Nothing.)

  • Charles Smith's hand (Charles burnt his right-hand amidst the turmoil while escaping Blackwater, similar to how Red Harlow injured the same hand whilst defending himself from Colonel Daren)
  • The Smell of the Grease Paint II (a callback to the mission "Freak Show")
  • Scorpion Carving (weapon customization option that resembles the Scorpion Revolver's golden handle inlays)
  • The Navy Revolver (the .45 pistol named "Pacificador", a weapon used by General Diego's Army)
  • Hanging Dog Ranch (the gang hideout was modeled after the Stoakes' Ranch)
  • Doc's Gone Fishing (the sign is a reference to a text that appears after leaving Sheriff Bartlett's office; a creative resource used to mock the obvious lack of accessible interiors in Red Dead Revolver)
  • Swift's Miracle Elixir (the elixir called "Swift's Liver Cod Oils" is perhaps an homage to Jack Swift, a gunslinger who had an animosity towards a Snake Oil merchant)

  • Storyteller (much like its predecessor, a camper at Hennigan's Stead will tell the story of Red Harlow and his quest for vengeance)

  • Wagon Circle near Mercer Station shot from all sides with arrows (bears a striking resemblance to the crucial scene in GTA San Andreas, where the Grove Street Families has a shootout with the LSPD from inside a circle of cars)
  • Train Chase (the entire chase sequence is an homage to the famous mission called "Wrong Side of the Tracks" from GTA San Andreas)
  • Pig Mask (a nod to Piggsy from the 2003 game Manhunt)
  • Cerberus (a rare Turkoman has the name of an organization of mercenaries hired by Lionel Starkweather, the main antagonist in Manhunt)
  • Anders Helgerson (the character's mannerisms, voice and overall look may be inspired by Pastor Richards, another charlatan from the 2002 game GTA Vice City)
  • Circus Wagons (the wagons contain attractions that are references to characters from the 2006 game Bully: Dead Conjoined Twins - Delilah and Jezebel, and Madame Irene - Majic Moostapholees, a fortune-telling machine)
  • City Kid (the leader of the street urchins bears some resemblance to Jimmy Hopkins, the protagonist in Bully)
  • Rats in the Bar Encounter (a callback to the mission "Rats in the Library" from Bully)
  • Calloway's Revolver ("Canis Canem Edit" is engraved into the side of the barrel, a reference to Bully, as the game was being marketed as Canis Canem Edit in PAL regions.)

  • Elysian Pool (this name was also used for a company in L.A. Noire and Elysian Island in Grand Theft Auto V)
  • Epsilon (from his unique birthmark, Francis Sinclair appears to be a reference to Kraff, one of many false deities worshiped by the Epsilon Program seen in the Grand Theft Auto series)
  • Area-Kill (Arthur Morgan's Dead Eye has ticking noises, it might be a possible nod to Michael De Santa's special ability and its characteristic sound effect)
  • Max Payne (Flaco Hernández dodges to the side as he fires just like Max Payne, the protagonist in the Max Payne saga)
  • Cemetery Shooting (reminiscent of the Chapter "Ain't No Reprievement Gonna Be Found Otherwise" from Max Payne 3)
  • Trolley Shooting (this mission replicates the bus sequence in "It's Drive Or Shoot, Sister" from Max Payne 3)
  • Slow-Mo (some missions active Dead Eye so that the player can dispatch multiple targets in a matter of seconds, this was a concept first introduced in Max Payne 3)

  • The Right Side of the Tracks (the title is a nod to the GTA San Andreas mission "Wrong Side of the Tracks")
  • Bounties Mathew and Warren Vance (both outlaws share their last names with Victor and Lance Vance, criminal brothers from GTA Vice City Stories)
  • Nikoli "Yukon" Borodin (this character's name appears to be a combination between Niko Bellic and Eduard Borodin, both of who are characters from Grand Theft Auto IV)
  • Jeb Phelps Contract (Jeb Phelps shares his last name with Cole Phelps, the protagonist in L.A. Noire)
  • Kerosene, Tar, and Greed (the name of this mission is a reference to the Max Payne 3 chapter titled "Sun Tan Oil, Stale Margaritas and Greed")
