Rustling is a criminal activity in Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. It is the act of stealing livestock, especially cattle, from farmers and herders. Oftentimes, livestock is rustled for financial gain, and sold to fences.

Rustling in Red Dead Redemption[]

In Red Dead Redemption, rustlers are rarely observed taking livestock or killing them in free-roam, but they are commonly found in Gang Hideouts. However, rustlers are present in a few missions throughout the story. In the mission "Justice in Pike's Basin," John Marston is tasked with helping Marshall Leigh Johnson and his deputies clear out Pike's Basin, which is inhabited by armed rustlers. After pursuing and killing most of the criminals inside the canyon, they will find the rustled cattle inside a pen.

Rustling in Red Dead Redemption 2[]

In Red Dead Redemption 2, the player cannot rustle herds like cattle outside of missions, although the player can rustle wild and tamed horses, and sell them to the horse fence in Clemens Cove. The player is first introduced to the mechanics of herding and rustling in the mission "The Sheep and the Goats," in which Arthur Morgan and John Marston rustle a flock of sheep and sell them at an auction yard in Valentine. In a companion activity in Chapter Four, the player can also break into Hill Haven Ranch with Uncle and rustle the cattle, selling them to the Davies brothers.

Trivia[]

  • In the mission "The Outlaw's Return," the player must defend Jack and their herd from cattle rustlers.
  • The Bollard Twins Gang are prominent cattle rustlers.
  • Marston can partake in rustling himself, however in the less traditional way. Killing and skinning cattle and horses are the closest the player can come to cattle rustling.
  • Rustlers may be encountered during Nightwatch jobs.
