He wears a recolored version of Billy Midnight's suit and pants in red and grey instead of blue and gold.[5] Nial was part of the cut "tre2" mission, and some animations exist for him including one that depicts Dutch opening a window only for Arthur to throw Nial out of it.

An obese member of the Murfree Brood bearing a resemblance to the obese man from Butcher Creek can only be seen in the gang's compendium image and is otherwise unused. There also exists an obese man with unknown affiliations, an obese "Mail Order Bride" who is a man wearing a dress, wig, and makeup, intended for Abe Maclean's cut mission and an obese art appraiser.

Mentioned Character Models[]

Cutscene/Mission PEDs[]
  • Frank Heck was meant to be a subject in the stranger side mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman". His model is within the game files but was left unused.[23]
  • There is an unused character in Red Dead Online named Bessie Adair. She has an eyepatch and was meant to be a daredevil as described in the "Aerial Amazement" newspaper article.
  • Grace Lancing, despite only appearing in a photo in Red Dead Online, has a full model that is never seen in-game implying that she was supposed to have a larger role.
  • Eliza, the woman with whom Arthur had a child, was intended to have a much larger role in the game. She has five cut missions with dialogue and animations for some of these missions. There are also remnants of textures and a model for her, including hair for 1907.[24] Eliza would've accompanied the gang across the various camps and then showed up in the epilogue; she was even intended to accompany the gang in Guarma at some point. Their son, Isaac, who has a cut model for a blanket he was likely supposed to be wrapped in, was also intended to appear as a very small child and was intended to have frozen to death at the beginning of the game.[25]
  • The Giant has cut animations,[26] models, lines,[27] and textures with alternate appearances for 1899 and 1907.

  • There is an unused model of the mentioned character named Archibald Jameson.[29] He also has a tuxedo intended for the mission "The Gilded Cage".
  • There is a cut character mentioned by an NPC in Smithfield's Saloon named Dale Maroney,[30] who has outfits for 1899 and 1907.[31] Cut animations reveal he has five encounters that were cut from the game. On the first, he would've been seen drunkenly stumbling out of the saloon; the player would've thrown him into one of the stalls at the stable. Then he'd be seen being beaten up a man in an alley in which the player could intervene. After this, he'd try to drunkenly steal something from a store only to be arrested by the sheriff. The player could then presumably meet him in a cell. Finally, the player could either watch him be hanged or intervene by shooting the rope in which he'd drunkenly stumble away.[32] He also has a cut vest and hair.
Bounty Targets[]
  • Gideon Bennett may have been intended to have been captured by the player as evidenced by his wanted poster.
Shopkeepers[]
  • The Strawberry Doctor was intended to physically appear at one point.
  • The Rhodes Doctor has an unused appearance in the files, animation files suggest he would've appeared in "Advertising, The New American Art".

  • In a trailer for the game, the Valentine General Store Owner looks entirely different.
  • In Red Dead Online, there exists an unused PED model for a camp cook.
  • The Old Cajun originally looked much different than in the final game, this cut version of him can still be seen in the mission photo for "A Fine Night For It". It's possible this version of him was also intended to be an informant for the Lemoyne Raiders, or perhaps an early version of Camille de Millemont due to his appearance and filename.
    • Similarly, a "Duster" (internal name for O'Driscolls) Informant appears to have been cut from the game.
  • Marko Dragic's robot has full functionality as an NPC and even drops unique loot, its 1907 appearance also works as an NPC.[33]
  • The Manmade Mutant has remnants for a fully functioning PED model within the game's files and thus it's possible it was intended to be able to move around at one point.

  • There is a cut character who may have been intended to have been used to sell tickets for the ferry in Saint Denis.

Lockhart Sr., Sam Neely, Burt Mackay, Emory Phillips, Eldin Grubb, Herbert Moon, Roscoe Brenner, Mavis Chambers, the Tumbleweed Butcher, and the Tumbleweed bartender all have cut casual outfits for 1899 and 1907.
    • However, Francis Drury's 1899 casual appearance is used in "Advertising, The New American Art".

Outfit Discrepancies[]

  • John Marston has various components that were ported from Red Dead Redemption and thus were likely intended to be placeholders, there even exists some textures unique to the game that were intended for these components. Arthur has a military uniform that uses models also ported from Redemption.
  • Maggie Fike has a pants model that is identical to the one she uses in the final game.
  • Angelo Bronte has a partially unused outfit that only appears in a photo in-game.

These models go entirely unused in the final game.

Missions[]

Story Missions[]

  • Textures for a saddle and a night stand as well as an audio file of Arthur spitting exists for a mission known as "Winter03" in the files. It would've likely taken place between "Enter, Pursued by a Memory" and "Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?".
  • A cut mission for Chapter 3 named "tre2" (or "Trelawny2", as the mission was given by Trelawny) was intended to appear in the game which involved Arthur and Dutch fighting off bounty hunters from Boston while on a train.[38] There exist animations for the pair hiding in a bar in Saint Denis at one point in the mission. Two unique train cars were intended to be used in this mission, and variants of these cars were reused in later missions. Arthur has a cut bounty poster that may have been used in this mission, and the cut character Nial Whelan would've been thrown out of a window during this mission.
  • There is a cut Chapter 4 mission named "NTV0" (or "Native0"). There is a cutscene regarding the conversation between Arthur and Charles for this mission, though it was trimmed down, turned into a random camp interaction, and only rarely occurs during Chapter 4.[39][40] The mission would've consisted of Charles, Eagle Flies, and Arthur going to rescue some kids who were sent off to boarding school in a military convoy. The convoy would be attacked and at some point a soldier, who at some point says he was "just following orders", would've tried to kill one of the Native Americans who would beg him not to do so and would say that they have a family.
  • One of the cut missions, named "ind2" (or "Industry2") in the game files, was supposed to involve Arthur, Micah, Hosea, and Abigail trying to test the law response times prior to "Banking, The Old American Art".[41] The mission would've involved Arthur planting dynamite underneath the Cornwall Freight and Commodities building before having to stop a witness, blowing the fuses, and escaping a shootout involving an Iron Mule in a train before both the train and the Iron Mule would've crashed, leading to Arthur and Micah jumping off the train and escaping.[38] A model for the blown up Cornwall Freight and Commodities building still exists within the game files,[42] as well as a mission image featuring Arthur planting the dynamite.
  • A mission was cut from the game (referred to as "smg1" or "Smuggler1" in the files) which involved Bill and Arthur rescuing Leon's niece during the Guarma chapter. Only a mission photo and models for Leon's niece remain in the game files, though cut text implicates that Arthur and Bill would've helped her off the island.[8] Roger Clark mentions that at one point, a scene would've taken place involving jumping into a lagoon.
  • A mission was cut from the game in which Arthur would assist Brenda Crawley in escaping her husband Hobart and his men. A crypt would be involved somehow and Brenda would express gratitude to Arthur for having helped her.

Side Missions[]

  • Eliza was the subject of a mission strand, known as "ELZ". The first mission involved her running off in Chapter 1 and Abigail telling Arthur to go look for her, wherein she would've set up camp not too far from Colter. Not much is known about the second mission other than Susan Grimshaw asking Arthur if he's seen Eliza while at Clemens Point during Chapter 3, and nothing at all is known about the third and fourth missions. In her final encounter, John could meet her in the epilogue just a bench away from where Tilly is encountered in Saint Denis, where he doesn't recognize her at first although she immediately recognizes him.
  • Text and animations leftover in the files have to do with a mission involving Arthur meeting with Mary Linton at the saloon in Rhodes, wherein she has rented a room. She mentions that the people who she is hiding from "may kill her" if Arthur does not help her.[43]
  • A cut character known as Senor Andreas Colon was supposed to give five missions in Guarma (referred to as "Coln" in the files) to either Arthur or John, though this was cut quite early in development and there are only remnants of what would've happened. He would've been met at a table for the first four missions (though he does not seem to have a physical role in the second), and each time he would be asleep with a bottle or a glass of wine and his opium pipe. During one encounter, there would've been a camera involved. During the final encounter, the player could find him sitting down on the ground writing in a book with an umbrella before he would've stood up, and joined the player in a boat. He'd look around and get frustrated at one point, before pointing excitedly in presumably different directions. Cut text suggests he also would've given the player a map, and the opium pipe belonging to him can be found inside of a room during a random encounter in Valentine.[44]
  • The cut character Dr. Lane Higgins was intended to be encountered on Guarma and was the subject of a stranger mission strand. Cut voicelines depict him asking the player to stop members of the Cuban Military from desecrating a sacred site in order to steal post-Columbian artifacts, which he believes "belong in a museum".[7]
  • A mission known as "MCAT" in the files would've involved the cut character Abe Maclean asking the player to herd some cattle for him. All the while, he'd be ordering a bride from a catalog who would show up as an obese man in a dress and the two would make way to Emerald Ranch where they could be found looking at a dress.
  • Over fifteen bounty hunting missions (including Doc Wormwood's, which would've taken place near Cornwall Kerosene and Tar) were cut from the game, this includes one near Watson's Cabin, one involving one at Beryl's Dream, one at Quaker's Cove, one at Guthrie Farm, one involving Lizzie Hicks, one involving a man named James "Jim" McGoGarty having been mauled at Diablo Ridge near Strawberry, possibly one involving Gideon Bennett, one at Old Fort Wallace, two near Bluewater Marsh, one near Ringneck Creek, one near Mattock Pond, one at Clemens' Point, and one near Braithwaite Manor.

Existing Mission Changes[]

  • Though possibly an oversight, in "Horse Flesh for Dinner" Arthur mentions the horses they steal to either be English Thoroughbreds or Arab Chargers (a non-existent horse breed) and Tavish Gray mentions the horses to be Thoroughbreds. Despite this, neither Thoroughbreds or Arab Chargers appear in the mission though it's also possible neither knew exactly what breed the horses were. A similar occurrence happens in "He's British, of Course" and "A Kind and Benevolent Despot" where the mule is referred to as a donkey and vice versa.
  • In "Enter Pursued by a Memory", Javier's actor recounts one of his first scenes for the game where he fought off against wolves in a cave with a torch.[45]
  • In "Angelo Bronte, A Man of Honor" a small cutscene with Arthur and John leaving the scene of the graveyard was cut.
  • Edmund Lowry Jr. has a cut bounty poster, which seems to implicate that he may have originally been turned in to the Strawberry Sheriff.
  • During "Eastward Bound" a cut cutscene featured Bill getting into a fight with someone and Arthur trying to break it up, either successfully or with backlash from both parties.
  • Slightly different dialogue was cut from "The New South".
  • Arthur has cut dialogue for yelling out in "Welcome to the New World".
  • During "A New Future Imagined" there exists a cut cutscene involving John and Abigail arriving home after their date.[46]
  • In "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", Billy Midnight was originally meant to be found running an establishment called Midnight's Saloon in Annesburg, as evidenced by cut text and an earlier version of his photograph for the mission.
  • During the mission "Good, Honest, Snake Oil", Benedict Allbright was originally supposed to be found in the Valentine Oilfields according to a poster in the back room of Ben Calloway's office and location coordinates in the files, similar to the cut character Doc Wormwood. He would've apparently tripped over a chicken crate and bystanders including a woman would be present during this bounty.
  • Molly, Javier, the cut Saint Denis Fence, and Archibald Jameson all have outfits for "The Gilded Cage", implying they would've been in that mission. Molly in particular has cut dialogue pertaining to the mission.[47]
  • During the mission "Bare Knuckle Friendships", John and Uncle were supposed to be seen riding to Riggs Station in a cutscene instead of immediately getting off of the train.[48]
  • Bill Williamson and Lenny Summers were originally supposed to be part of the mission "Pouring Forth Oil IV".
  • "Duchesses and other Animals" along with many other missions in the game have cut animations for John, with subtle differences throughout such as John refusing to let Algernon hug him.
  • Many stranger missions appear to have unique animations for both Arthur and John, though John's animations go unused in the final game.
  • Bill was originally supposed to be part of the mission "Country Pursuits" instead of Dutch van der Linde.
  • Originally Javier Escuella was supposed to be a part of the mission "Just a Social Call", as pre-release images showed him fighting alongside Arthur in a shootout in Annesburg.[49]
  • Frank Heck was intended to have a mission in "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", wherein he would've been encountered playing a game of cards in the Tumbleweed Saloon (though it seems an attempt was made to relocate it to the Saint Denis Saloon) with four others. The player needed to have a certain amount of money and they needed to be dressed in specific clothing in order for the guard to let them into the room. The player would request for Frank Heck to pose for a photo, to which he would agree. Afterwards, the player would've participated in a game of cards with him. At some point, the player would've insulted Frank Heck which would result in him flipping over the table and drawing irons. It was possible to disarm one of his guns, which would result in him attempting to shoot at the player with the other. Only a mission photo, music, some animations, the photo Theodore Levin would've given Arthur of Frank Heck (which can still partially be seen in the first mission), and Frank Heck's model remain in the files.[50]
  • An unused female character would've taken part in the mission "Oh, Brother".
  • Arthur has a far more intimidating line cut from interrogating the O'Driscoll in "Outlaws from the West".[51]
  • "He's British, of Course" is known as "Here, Kitty Kitty" in the files and would've likely featured a camel as well as the Bradley Brothers in Saint Denis.
  • "The Artist's Way" is known as "For My Art" in the files.
  • "The Mercies of Knowledge" is known as "Ride The Lightning" in the files, and it seems as though it could've been done by John at one point.
  • In "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", unused voicelines reveal that originally Ged Calloway was named Matt (or Mac) Calloway.
  • Arthur has cut dialogue for completing "A Test of Faith" despite him never being able to collect all of the dinosaur bones without the use of glitches.[52]
  • Arthur has cut dialogue for completing the mission "A Fisher of Fish" despite him never being able to catch all of the legendary fish without the use of glitches.[53]
  • A cut cutscene shows Dutch and Arthur exiting from the Saint Denis Tailor in their new outfits prior to "The Gilded Cage" mission.[54] There also appears to be a follow-up to this involving the player getting in the carriage afterwards as lines for Bill exists for this sequence.
  • In the mission "Red Dead Redemption", there are extended cutscenes that are hidden behind the Coyote and the Buck scenes.
  • John has unused lines for "Good, Honest, Snake Oil", implying he could've done that mission originally.
  • Black Belle has a bounty poster that was likely intended to appear during her mission, though it is instead replaced with a poster of Doc Wormwood in the final. This poster appears marked out in Red Dead Online's Bounty Hunter camp theme.
  • Animations leftover in the files show that during the mission where Micah is broken out of jail, a mob would've gathered in front of the sheriff's office with scythes, pitchforks, torches, and more. At some point, an ambush would've occurred in the room the player can rent in the Welcome Center involving a blunderbuss.

Locations[]

  • Purchasable safehouses were cut though there remains several properties with unfinished interiors which are labeled as player housing in the game files in Strawberry, Rhodes, and Annesburg.[55][56][57]
  • The train station at Manzanita Post was meant to make a return, it also would've had an interior area at one point.
  • There was meant to be a gang hideout in Roanoke Ridge where Van Horn Trading Post is now located called "Tallulah Jetty". It's possible that the Tallulah Jetty gang would've inhabited it. A bartender for it exists in the files.
  • The grass color in The Heartlands was supposed to be predominantly yellow and not green.
  • Ambarino was supposed to be smaller with only the northern and southern portions being explorable.
  • Pronghorn Ranch has a partially cut living room interior that can only be seen for a few moments in one mission.
  • Millesani Claim was supposed to be located in Big Valley instead of in Grizzlies West.
  • The gang's camp on Guarma was supposed to be located in a cave on a cut area of the map known as El Hueco, it appears the place was relocated and an arch covers its intended entrance in the final game. An occlusion model still exists in the files for it.
  • Instead of the gang settling at Clemens Cove, it seems they were intended to settle at Dewberry Creek.
  • A landmark called "Cohutta" was shown on the leaked map, it being the location with the sacred place in which Arthur and Rains Fall visited during in "Archeology for Beginners", though the location was not named in the final game.
  • In Ambarino there was a deleted location called "Iron Cloud", which would've served as a gang camp and a landmark.
  • There was a location known as "Dzoavits Claim", there is a cut letter that refers to it as a mine.
  • Cochinay seems to have been intended to be a gang hideout or something of the sort with a jail and gallows.
  • Caliga Hall was intended to have an accessible interior at its main house.
  • Cut text may implicate that Nuevo Paraíso was intended to be fully explorable at some point in the game's development, possibly as a DLC or in Red Dead Online.
  • Tempest Rim was meant to be accessible and served as the original location of Colter.
  • Doverhill was meant to be located in the Cumberland Forest.
  • The barn for Beecher's Hope at one point was supposed to be seen in a state in which it was under construction, but only appears in a completed state in the game.
  • The Giant's cave's were supposed to have an opened up entrance as seen by his cut animations.[26]
  • Armadillo has a few cut interiors, most of which are leftovers from Red Dead Redemption. There is, however, a cut bathing room and player room which is not featured in the final game and only appears on the low poly map.[58]
  • Cut text references a general store at Emerald Ranch.[59]
  • The rest of the mine shaft at Gaptooth Ridge which appeared in Red Dead Redemption was intended to also appear in the game, but it was left unfinished and blocked off by some rocks.
  • Sisika Penitentiary has a cut low poly interior featuring cell blocks.
  • Many buildings around the map have cut basic interiors, most of which are empty or extremely lackluster (with only one or a few props in them).
  • The fence at Emerald Ranch was originally supposed to be in the house across from the saloon with the only partially visible interior.
  • The Aberdeen Pig Farm was originally meant to be located in the Heartlands instead of being in Scarlett Meadows.
  • The Blackwater barber would've had a much larger back room as evidenced by the low poly map.
  • Clingman was meant to be a homestead located in the Cumberland Forest.
  • Sisika Penitentiary was located much further away in earlier versions of the game, some cut props still exist underneath the map near where it would've been, and a glitch occurs where hovering over its beta location on the map will show the player as being wanted dead or alive in that area.
  • On the low poly map for Bayou Nwa, a submerged boat appears between the Tiny Church and Sonny's house.
  • Also on the low poly map, the sign on the Valentine gunsmith's counter is different and some shops like the one in Tumbleweed have labels for the shovels and other tools.
  • Mayor Nicholas Timmins' house has an inaccessible interior, part of it briefly appears in the end credit sequence for the game.
  • There was supposed to be a gang hideout in Bayou Nwa called "Criard Slaughterhouse." The gang would've set up camp there for an unknown amount of time in earlier versions.
  • Van Horn Trading Post was originally located further north on a portion of the map which is now inaccessible.
    • At Van Horn, there was a rope bridge that the player could cross to get to the lighthouse but was removed from the game. The bridge still exists in the game files and can still be spawned through mods and the bridge can also be seen in a loading screen picture of the lighthouse.[60]
  • Evidence would suggest the player was originally going to be able to sail over to the shore across from the Lannahechee River and Flat Iron Lake, but this was scrapped at a late point in development.
  • A horse jumping arena would've appeared somewhere in the game as evidenced by a cut compendium image.
  • The gang was supposed to set up camp at Hanging Dog Ranch in the beta.
  • A mass grave connected to the curse of Valentine was cut, it was intended to be located near the stables.
  • Numerous pictures on the map cards for stables are of different locations that mostly exist in the final game, this includes the Strawberry stable being located next to Norman's house, the Valentine stable being located at the Livery Sale & Feed Stable, the Rhodes stable being located near the cut jumping arena, and the Van Horn stable being located in the abandoned building behind the hotel. Due to an unused blacksmith blip in the files, it's possible that the current locations of the stables were simply meant to be blacksmiths, possibly intended to provide tack for horses. It's also possible that at some point, the player could freely go inside stables.
  • The Rhodes Parlour House's bathing room originally jutted out of the side based on a low-poly interior left in the files.
  • The Strawberry Doctor was intended to be functional at one point, Strawberry also had a saloon inside of the Trackers Hotel.
  • Annesburg was intended to have a fully functioning general store, doctor's office, saloon, and bank.

Location Name Discrepancies[]

  • Text in the files refers to Canebreak Manor as "Cranebreak Manor".
  • Guarma was originally called "Guama" and was intended to be smaller and fully explorable. The player was also intended to be able to revisit it in the Epilogue.[61] It had many different cut locations such as Le Vilaj which had a bar and a few shops with a leftover occlusion model remaining in the files, El Hueco, and more.
  • Fort Wallace was known as "Old Fort Wallace" and was located in Grizzlies East in earlier stages of development. At one point, it also served as spot in which bounty posters could be acquired and had a shop. It was located higher up on the mountain range than in the final game, and the mountain it was supposed to appear on had a completely different shape during the beta. A cut road sign can be found underneath the map near where it was supposed to be, and a glitch occurs where hovering over its beta location on the map will show the player as being wanted dead or alive in that area.
  • Butcher Creek was originally known as "Butcher's Creek".
  • Text in the game refers to the Heartland Oil Fields as the Valentine Oilfields.
  • Bluewater Marsh was initially named "Bluegill Marsh".
  • Willard's Rest was originally called "Rocky Seven".
  • Saint Denis was further below its current location and it was initially named "New Bordeaux". However, the name would be used in the Mafia III, another game by Rockstar Games parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Some documents and audio clips still refer to it as New Bordeaux in the final game.

Minigames[]

  • Rustling was a minigame that would've likely worked the same as it does or similar to in the "Go Rustling (Uncle)" mission. It could've been done at locations such as Pronghorn Ranch, Carmody Dell, Maclean's House, Painted Sky, Downe's Ranch, Larned Sod, Clingman, and Adler Ranch.
  • Liar's Dice was a minigame that is mentioned in the game, but cut assets and voicelines suggest it was going to be playable like in the first game.
  • Three Card Monte was cut from the game, and assets for it exist in the files.
  • Chess is classified as a minigame in the files and thus it's possible it was supposed to be played at one point.

  • An archery minigame was cut at some point in development.
  • It appears to have originally been possible to cheat at Poker.

Items[]

  • There were collectible pieces of an animal skin painting that depicted a massacre of Native Americans by settlers, connected to the curse of Valentine. They could've been collected in spots near Valentine, and a man at a campfire still mentions them during a random encounter. Other Native American artifacts for the curse of Valentine were also cut from the game, though it seems they would've been discarded by the player shortly after being unearthed, this includes a Native American mask that would've been sitting in the gunsmith.
  • There were supposed to be more trinkets in the game, but they were cut before the release of the game. They are as follows: A Mayan Trinket, an Asteroid Chunk Trinket, a Bobcat Claw Trinket, a Ghost Alligator Trinket, a Badger Claw Trinket, a Bat Wing Trinket, a Bear Heart Trinket, a Bull Gator Trinket, a Condor Beak Trinket, a Rabbit's Foot Trinket, a Racoon Claw Trinket, a Deputy Star Trinket, a Crane Feather Trinket, a Toad Legs Trinket, a Flower Spun Trinket, a Poisoned Bluegill Trinket, a Futuristic Trinket, a Panther Claw Trinket, a Giant Boar Trinket, a Giant Rabbit Trinket, a Gila Monster Tooth Trinket, a Chelonian Master Trinket, a Little Egret Trinket, a Duck Feather Trinket, a Reddish Egret Trinket, an Eagle Feather Trinket, a Heron Feather Trinket, a Gold Trinket, an Ornate Gold Trinket, a Bull Horn Trinket, a Squirrel Tooth Trinket, and an Oxen Horn Trinket.
    • Some of the cut trinkets still spawn in game. The Bull Horn Trinket can be found in a chest inside the Blackwater Sheriff's Office. The Rhodes Fence has the Squirrel Tooth Trinket, Toad Legs Trinket and Turtle Shell Trinket. The Turtle Shell Trinket was released when the game came out for PC.[62] Other initially cut trinkets like the Ram Horn, Buck Antler, Javelina, and Snowy Egret trinkets were later added to Red Dead Online.
    • The cut Squirrel Tooth trinket was actually used for the UI picture for "Private" lobbies for the online mode pre Red Dead Online.[62]
    • An alternate version of the Squirrel Tooth Trinket can be found in an icon within the game's files.
    • The Squirrel Tooth Trinket was mean to be given out by a beggar originally, as evidenced by animation files leftover in the game.
    • William was meant to give the player a trinket during "To the Ends of the Earth" as a reward according to voicelines left in the files.
    • The random encounter with the moonshiners was going to award a trinket originally, as seen by voicelines leftover in the files.
    • The icon for the cut Deputy Star Trinket depicts it as simply being a single badge as opposed to being multiple badges put together.

  • Like in Red Dead Redemption, the player was originally able to obtain pardon letters that would've alleviated them of their bounties.
  • Documents exist in the game that went unobtainable in the final game for one reason or another, these include a letter that would've been looted from the cut character Mr. Pattison, a letter that cannot be picked up in the shack with a fallen tree, letters dropped from foremen that do not spawn in the game, Doc Wormwood's bounty poster (which initially loads into the Valentine Sheriff's office for a moment before disappearing), his other bounty poster, James' bounty poster, a coach robbery tip for a moonshine wagon in Bluewater Marsh (with variations for 1899 and 1907), an invitation to the party in "The Gilded Cage", a restraining order from Gavin, a letter about Dzoavit's Claim, two letters from Brenda Crawley, a letter from Deborah MacGuiness that would've been received after mailing in your first dinosaur bone, a Scarlet Fever handbill, a paper related to H. Fischer's home business, and a letter that Simon Pearson is supposed to send John in the epilogue despite him never doing so. Some other documents, namely the one that Abigail leaves to John in "Motherhood", the Letter from Tilly, Molly's Poem, Bill's Dishonorable Discharge, the Letter from Lenny's Father, the Letter to Micah to Amos, The Case of the Deceitful German, The American Inferno, Existence and Oblivion, the Diary, The Castle Above the Glen, The Castle Above the Moor, The Castle in the Field of Lavender, Mary-Beth's Notebook, the First Bank Robbery Newspaper Scrap, the New England Examiner Scrap, the family Daguerreotype from "The Iniquities of History II", and the bank document from "Home of the Gentry?" have functionality to be added into the player's inventory, but can only be accessed via glitches.[65][66]

  • There are a couple cut item requests for the game: Josiah Trelawny was supposed to request an Eagle Talon and Leopold Strauss was supposed to request reading glasses. Some other item requests appear to have been for Javier's Sombrero, Karen's book, Lenny's "bf", Mary-Beth's "as", and Micah's "bk" (it is currently unknown what these initials stand for).
  • Lettuce was originally supposed to be an item that could either be consumed or fed to a horse.

Animals[]

Mammals[]

  • Bobcats were originally in the game but were cut at some point during development. Only a compendium icon, audio files, and clues for a Legendary individual remain in the game files.
  • Based off of a cut white giant rabbit foot trinket and clues leftover in the game files, it is implied that at some point, a Legendary giant white rabbit was intended to be in the game and could've been hunted by the player.
  • A camel was meant to appear in-game.[67] It was likely originally featured in the Stranger mission "He's British, of Course" and has animations relating to lassoing and decomposing.
  • Audio files and a model skeleton exists in the game files for baby bears.[68]
  • Black bears originally did not have fur and instead used a texture as shown in earlier compendium images (removed in an update) for them. This lack of fur can be seen in-game on all animals that have it, albeit only when said animal is far enough away from the camera.
  • Audio and a slaughtering animation (possibly intended for a trailer) exists for piglets.
  • Cows were originally identical to how they appeared in Red Dead Redemption, as seen in the first trailer for the game and on a corpse model.
  • Based on the mission image for "A Kind and Benevolent Despot", donkeys were originally bigger. Also, textures for donkey hide still exist within the game files.
    • Similarly, text referencing Mule hide also exists within the game files.[59] Further remnants suggest they would've dropped stringy meat.
  • Death sound files exist for a rhesus monkey.[69]
  • Sound files for death sounds for chimps are in the files.
  • Rottweilers were evidently cut from the game as audio and an expression dictionary still exists for them.

  • A loading screen for the game shows an earlier model for the Buck that is still used for some of the taxidermy assets around the map.
  • The goat corpse at the Pagan Ritual site has unused textures for the body of the goat.

Reptiles/Birds[]

  • A side-mission involving a "River Monster" was cut. The Loch Ness Monster Easter Egg featured in the Grand Theft Auto Online The Cayo Perico Heist Heist DLC appears to have reused the model which was intended to serve as the River Monster's model.[70]
    • Audio files for the River Monster also remain in the game files.[71]
    • According to associated game files, the River Monster would've also apparently dropped Crustacean meat if killed.[72] It also appears to have at one point had similar loot to a frog.
    • Cut dialogue indicates the River Monster was intended to appear somewhere in Flat Iron Lake.
  • There are audio files cut from the game for crocodiles.
  • An albino alligator was cut from the game.
  • There exists a cut texture mapped for a Bullgator.
  • Despite being able to be found in Guarma if the player makes a run towards their spawn points, the Green Sea Turtle was mostly cut from the game and can only be studied and drawn into the players' journal (but not added to their Compendium). There is also a cut functionality to skin the Turtle. Due to the Green Sea Turtle not being added to the compendium, there exist unused compendium images related to that in the files.
  • An earlier compendium image (removed in an update) for the Legendary Bullgator depicted a different appearance than in the final game.
  • Voice lines seemingly intended for a talking bird were cut from the game.
  • Coral snakes were scrapped from the game at some point, with the only remnant of them being a cut model.

Fish[]

  • The Legendary Channel Catfish has a model which was left unused.[73]
    • Although game files state the player was never intended to interact with the catfish,[74] Arthur Morgan has generic voice lines for catching it.[75]
    • Dialogue suggests it was intended to be yellow at some point in development.
  • Sharks were supposed to be encountered in Guarma and included in the Compendium. There are two types; the Hammerhead and the Tiger Shark. Tiger Sharks come in Silver, Matte, and Orange varieties. Hammerhead Sharks have two varieties, with one having a bit of brown detailing. They will still spawn in Guarma, but only if the player returns to or enters Guarma early through the use of a mod or exploit. A cut random encounter involving a shark attack can also be found within the game's code.
    • Textures, a model, and scripts also exist for a discoverable dead Tiger Shark, evidence suggests the player would've opened its mouth and possibly taken one of its teeth. The model for the dead Tiger Shark was reused in Grand Theft Auto V's Cayo Perico heist.
  • Unused texture files, compendium icons, and model skeletons exist for both a regular and a brown Marbled Grouper, a type of fish which only appears on a cigarette card in the final game, as well as other cut fish including a Greater Amberjack, a Cobia, a Great Barracuda, a King Mackerel, a Snook with black and common variations, a Wahoo, and a Red Snapper. Textures and compendium icons exist for a Speckled Trout, Brown and Black Bullhead Catfishes, a Rainbow Trout, and a Tiger Muskie. Some other icons exist for variations of fish that do exist in the game, but they go unused likely due to a rework of the compendium.
    • Also, the model skeleton for the Muskie lists the fish as being "ml" size instead of "lg" (large).

Horses[]

  • There are many horse coats completely cut from the final game; these coats appeared in trailers and promotional images prior to the game's release. The only horses left in the files that do not appear in the final game are the Speckled White Arabian, the Liver Chestnut Hungarian Half-bred who was intended to be ridden by Alfredo Montez in Red Dead Online,[76] the Mealy Chestnut Belgian Draft with the Breton model who was intended to be killed by Brother Owlhoot, four alternative horses that were supposed to spawn as corpses, and the Silver Bay Thoroughbred. There are still a few cut horses that appear in compendium images, and even some unused images and horses from when "rare" horses would've had separate photos in the compendium. There are a few horses cut from the game referenced in text files, these include a Malnourished Horse, a Sabino American Paint, a Black American Paint, an Amber Champagne American Standardbred, a Mosaic American Standardbred, a Strawberry Roan American Standardbred, a Blood Bay Arabian, a Chestnut Ardennes (it is worth noting Brown Jack is internally called a Chestnut Ardennes), a "Villain Horse" which may have been for low honor players, a "Hero Horse" which may have been for high honor players, a Dark Bay Dutch Warmblood, an Albino Turkoman, a Grey-Black Dutch Warmblood, a Grey Andalusian, a Silver-Black Dutch Warmblood, a Dark Chestnut Hungarian Half-bred, a Perlino Hungarian Half-bred, a Sooty Buckskin Hungarian Half-bred, a Bay Kentucky Mountain Saddle (note that Kentucky Saddlers are still sometimes referred to as Kentucky Mountain Saddle horses in-game), a Brindle Kentucky Mountain Saddle, a Dapple Grey Tennessee Walker, a Blond Bay Suffolk Punch, a Chocolate Dapple Missouri Fox Trotter, a Black Morgan, a Flaxen Liver Chestnut Morgan, a Chestnut Morgan, a Flaxen Black Missouri Fox Trotter, a Palomino Mustang, a Buttermilk Buckskin Nokota, a Grey Shire, a Dark Liver Chestnut Suffolk Punch, a Deep Red Chestnut Suffolk Punch, a Cherry Bay Thoroughbred, Flaxen Chestnut Thoroughbred, and a Grey Tersk.[77] Another cut horse can be seen in Pearson's picture of the Van der Linde gang. It also appears the Flaxen Roan Tennessee Walker was supposed to be found in the world and could've pulled a wagon as seen in a trailer for the game.
  • Wrinkle mask textures and a model skeleton are in the game files for a baby horse, it's possible that this horse was intended to appear during the mission "Fatherhood, For Beginners".[78]
  • Baylock's original texture looked nearly identical to that of the Dark Horse's, minus the scarring. Various details were changed including the number of socks, eye color, and face marking; all of which was possibly done in an attempt to distance him from the Dark Horse.
  • There exist remnants of a living version of the dead horse model that appears in multiple locations across the map (including an out of bounds avalanche, near the Panoramic Map, and as John's horse during "Enter, Pursued by a Memory".) Animations also exist for this horse.
  • An unused 2K resolution horse texture exists within the files.
  • Geldings (castrated male horses) were intended to be in the game as evidenced by text relating to them in the files.[79]
  • An idle animation exists in the files for horses to urinate.[80]
  • The Standard Horse can be seen acting as a replacement for the Raven Black Shire, Buell, and Uncle's horse in trailers for the game as the model served as a stand-in for many cutscene horses.

Transportation[]

  • Three train cars were completely or partially cut from the game: A higher class sleeping quarters train car exists which is used during the missions where Captain Monroe, Reverend Swanson, or Mother Superior Calderón board the train but it was originally supposed to be used during a cut mission in which it would've also featured a barrel, a crate, and boxes of dynamite. A lower class sleeping quarters train car also exists and blows up during "Our Best Selves" though it was intended for the same cut mission as before and has an unused exterior. Finally, a train car with three private cabins was cut from the game.
  • The warship in Guarma has an interior area and backing details that can never be seen by the player through normal means.
  • Most of the moving boats in the game, including large boats like the ones near Saint Denis, have cut functionality to be driven by the player. This functionality was made accessible by a now patched glitch in Red Dead Online.
  • Arthur was originally able to travel to Blackwater and locations in New Austin.
  • The player was originally able to pay $100 to board a ferry, which would've taken them to locations such as Blackwater, Saint Denis, and Guarma. John was able to go to Guarma in the epilogue this way.[59]
  • In Pearson's photo of the Van der Linde gang, the coach that is used has a flipped lever (as also seen in the thumbnail for "Friends in Very Low Places") and is a different size than the one used in the final game. It also has luggage that does not appear in-game.

Weapons[]

  • An unfinished model exists for a Blunderbuss.
  • A cut model for a Derringer can be found in the game files.
  • There exists a model for a Buffalo Rifle in the files.
  • An icon, model, and textures exist for Brass Knuckles, which could've been equipped by the player.
  • Confusion, Drained, and Disoriented were all statuses that could've been inflicted by special arrows or throwing knives.
  • Text exists in the files for a folding shotgun, as well as a photo of Arthur wielding the gun.
  • The compendium image for John's revolver depicts a slightly different appearance than in the final game.
  • Various weapons such as the Elephant Rifle were originally intended for story mode, but were instead reused for Red Dead Online.
  • Some gang members' weapons were different in appearance in earlier versions of the game, and some gang members carried weapons they don't use in the final game such as Javier having throwing knives.
  • Trelawny was meant to have a custom Double-Action Revolver in Red Dead Online.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Some props never show up in the final game, either due to performance issues or design decisions. Sometimes these cut props will show up under the map, like the flagpoles and other props underneath Fort Riggs.
  • Arthur and numerous other characters (most of which are gang members), have lots of cut dialogue. Some of this cut dialogue came from missions or from cut features, such as Arthur originally being able to ride with gang members outside of missions.
    • There exists a bunch of dialogue relating to Arthur in New Austin as well as portions of West Elizabeth, including lines from Sheriff Freeman referring to Arthur by name and lines for Arthur ordering food that is only available in the Blackwater Saloon.
    • Dialogue can be triggered via accessing Pronghorn Ranch's cut interior wherein Mrs. Geddes will ask Duncan where David Geddes has gone off to, only for him to state that he has gone into town. She then begins to bemoan and emotionally play the piano, crying out about how David is always going into town.[81] Another event can occur in the house after this in which she will continue to play the piano.
    • John O'Creagh was originally intended to voice Uncle before his passing, some lines belonging to him remain in the game.
    • Abigail's original voice actor from the first game was intended to make a reprisal, some lines by her are still in the files.
    • Jack Marston's 1899 voice was originally going to be voiced by a male, some remnants of his early voice still remain in the files.
    • Most of the cut cutscenes have dialogue that goes unused in the final game.
    • Dutch has a cut line in which he tries to seduce a female.
    • John has cut dialogue pertaining to him visiting Arthur's grave.
    • Coach drivers have lines relating to gossiping while driving the player to their destination.
    • Silas Crawford has cut lines mentioning Princess Isabeau.
    • Arthur has a bunch of cut ambient combat lines and different lines intended for cracking the reins on a wagon.
    • Some characters have generic lines that could potentially be triggered in the game, but are not for one reason or another. Just a few examples of this include things such as Molly's generic lines for riding a horse despite her never doing so (it is worth noting that text in the game suggests characters like Molly and Pearson would be able to drive vehicles, and ride horses), gang member's lines for being hogtied, sheriffs (including those in Blackwater and New Austin) referring to Arthur by name or to the Van der Linde gang, ambient lines for characters that only appear in "The Gilded Cage", and Joe Butler's lines for storming off or engaging in a fight.
    • Sheriffs have lines for bringing out dogs to track down the player.
    • Despite only a few select characters actually playing blackjack and poker, many NPCs including generic women, men, lawmen, shopkeepers, etc. have lines for playing it as well as the cut minigame liar's dice.
    • There is unused dialogue for robbing saloons.[82]
  • Text that was cut from the game suggests that you could originally visit someone at Lagras, Manzanita Post, Benedict Point, Butcher Creek, Valentine, Strawberry, and Blackwater who would buy stolen horses from you or forge papers so that your horse wouldn't be considered stolen and you could sell them to the stable.[59] There is also text suggesting you could solicit the services of a horse trainer. It seems these forged papers were moved to the fence, but ultimately went unused.
  • Many cut models exist within the game files. Most notably, cut models exist for a caboose door (intended to be used in the cut "tre2" mission), a crashed train, and a train stopper (intended for the "ind2" mission).
  • It seems John was supposed to be able to shave in the bedroom of Beecher's Hope before the house had reached its full completion.
  • The bathing ladies were originally supposed to be prostitutes, the prostitutes even spawn outside of the player's view in some scenarios when the bathing lady appears.
  • In some trailers and pictures for the game, Charles is seen riding Falmouth prior to the epilogue.
  • Molly O'Shea originally was going to be buried in a unmarked grave in relative close proximity to Beaver Hollow instead of her body being burned. The texture of grave, location coordinates and model exist in the game files. It can be spawned with mods.[83]
  • The player was intended to be able to borrow horses from gang members.
  • Wapiti Warriors were intended to act as lawmen in the Ambarino region, but this functionality was completely cut prior to release.
  • Cut saloon dishes including Turtle Soup, Consomme, Cornbread, Corned Beef Hash, Crab Cakes, a Ham Sandwich, a Liver Sandwich, Oyster Stew, a Pork Biscuit Sandwich, and Potatoes and Peas were scrapped from the game at some point in development. It is possible (though unconfirmed) that they were intended for Armadillo, Annesburg, Emerald Ranch, and Guarma as those locations either don't serve food or were originally intended to have a functioning saloon.
  • Charles and Bill have an unused encounter in which Charles punches Bill for tripping him.[84]
  • When Arthur was originally supposed to visit New Austin in 1899, the Cholera outbreak would've been replaced with the Scarlet Fever outbreak (which is still mentioned in-game) to keep it historically accurate to the time period.
  • Arthur has cut journal entries and drawings for animals, plants, and points of interest that are exclusive to New Austin as well as the Great Plains and Tall Trees areas of West Elizabeth, which he cannot access through normal means. This includes entries for Red Sage, Wild Feverfew, Blackcurrant, a Gila Monster, Labrador Retriever, Peccary, Armadillo, Condor, Sonoran Pronghorn, the Legendary Cougar, Pronghorn, and Tatanka Bison, and points of interest including the Jesuit Missionary, Donkey Lady, Sperm Whale Bones, Circus Wagons, Wickiup, and the Crashed Airship. He also has a cut journal entry for finishing "A Test of Faith" and for seeing the later phases of the Strange Man's shack. John has cut journal entries for the Green Sea Turtle (Arthur's entry isn't technically cut as the player can still study them), and other Guarma-exclusive animals including the Scarlet Macaw, Great Green Macaw, Blue-and-Yellow Macaw, and Red-Footed Booby, as well as certain animals from missions such as a Shire, American Standardbred, and a Tennessee Walker (while Arthur is required to mount at least one Shire, American Standardbred, and one Tennessee Walker, skipping these parts of the missions will still fill out the journal entry). In order to get some journal entries for John such as the deer, yarrow, and rabbit entry the player must skip certain parts of missions.
  • A pirate skeleton was cut from the game in which it seems Arthur could've obtained the jacket and hat from on Guarma. There also exists a cut pirate skeleton key which may have been related to this.
  • Evidence within the game suggests that shopkeepers and lawmen were supposed to be able to change into more casual outfits and were able to leave their posts and play a game or get a drink at the saloon. It's also possible they would've loitered at other locations around town, but this functionality was scrapped at an indeterminant time prior to the game's release.
  • There are many cut cutscenes that are not tied to a specific mission leftover in the game.
    • If Arthur were to have been arrested in Annesburg, a cutscene involving Charles bringing in a hostage and demanding for him to be released would have played. Charles rides away on a Standard Horse at the end.[85]
    • A cutscene exists of John giving Jack a new book before walking out of his room.[86]
    • A cutscene in the end credits was supposed to feature Edgar Ross and Fordham interrogating citizens and Sheriff Hanley in Strawberry.[87]
  • Sometimes, after the player dies in a mission there are extended animations and dialogue tied to their death that cannot be seen or heard due to it being abruptly cut off.
  • Despite there being no horses on Guarma, there is mission fail text for attacking some of the characters exclusive to there such as Baptiste's and Hercule's horses.
  • Some animations are marked as being intended for a trailer, though not all of them were used.
  • It seems at one point the player could've saved the starving kids at Clawson's Rest, cut text shows they would've been taken to the sheriff in Valentine.
  • The Chelonians were originally known as "Kelonians".
  • Internally, The Grand Korrigan is referred to as the Serendipity, implying it was originally intended to be that ship.
  • Arthur's police uniform disguise is much darker in the mission prior to and after him wearing it, implying the Saint Denis Police uniforms were originally meant to be darker in color.
  • There is an unused file mentioning quicksand.
  • In the files, there is an unused cheat code: "IS IT STRENGTH OR TRUE WEAKNESS?".
  • Thomas Downes' grave is in a different location during a trailer for the game, the grave Edith Downes mourns at is not present in that location in the final game.
  • At some point in development, the player could set up camp on Guarma.
  • The picture at the Aberdeen Pig Farm's textures have it listed as a picture of a grandmother, possibly implying it was originally meant to be the Aberdeen couple's grandmother.
  • A few blips were cut from the game including a blacksmith, riverboat, plant, fence building, locked house, rustling, round up, market stall, epilogue feeding, epilogue guard, and bank blip. The epilogue guard and epilogue feed blip appear to have been intended to be used at Pronghorn Ranch and would've likely had corresponding actions/minigames attached to them.
  • The actor for Sadie recounts a take of a scene cut from the epilogue which caused some of the actors present to feel uncomfortable regarding their manhood.
  • Various activities with gang members were cut from the game or watered down, this includes hunting with Javier, hunting with John twice, target practice with Javier, rustling with John and Javier, fishing with Hosea, poker with Hosea, fishing with Dutch, robbing the Strawberry Doctor with Bill, a bank robbery with Bill, drinking with Sean, fishing with Charles, drinking with Swanson, playing Poker with Pearson, and drinking with Uncle.
  • The photo of Charlotte and Cal Balfour is said to be in Chicago, though the picture was taken outside of the Braithwaite Manor. In the files, the picture is named "Adler Mansion" and also "Rocky Mansion" in that same file.
  • A model and animations exist for taking a meteor from the squirrel statue.
  • Originally, it seems police would bring out dogs to track down the player similar to bounty hunters.
  • Loading screen tips were originally supposed to appear as the game was loading.
  • A random encounter was cut from the game involving Arthur or John helping a lady who is trapped under her horse. After doing so, the lady will then ask to either be taken to Valentine, Annesburg, or Saint Denis. It seems the lady may have needed to have been saved from a group of Lemoyne Raiders and was on her way to visit her pa. She would've commented on the buildings in Saint Denis and told a story about her cousin Lucy who hurt her arm and ended up having it permanently messed up after the cast was removed. She also expresses sorrow over the horse she lost, whose name was Moses, and seems extremely upset from losing him.
  • There is an unused acrobat outfit with a ripped ankle, as well as animations for a corpse next to a tightrope. It is possible, though unconfirmed, that the outfit was intended for the corpse.

Hoaxes/Misconceptions[]

  • An infamous leak that has since been proven false; dubbed the "Evil Hair Leak", was spread around the internet shortly after the game released. It detailed numerous cut plot lines and features such as horse breeding, Micah being a good guy initially, and the player being allowed to pursue a bisexual relationship with Charles.
  • After mentions of there being a cut love interest for Arthur, many assumed that this was intended to have been Sadie; it was later revealed to have been Eliza instead.
  • Two photos of the Grand Theft Auto Online Loch Ness Monster in Flat Iron Lake floated around the internet that claimed to be beta mission photos for the river monster. This was later revealed to be a hoax by the creator of said photos.
  • A video titled "Red Dead Redemption 2 - All Easter Eggs And Secrets! (TOP 100)" that garnered over five million views showed the Neanderthal hidden behind some rocks in the Elysian Pool. This was later proven to be a hoax.
  • The mission photo for Smuggler1 depicted a woman who many assumed to be Eliza, though it was later discovered that this character was Leon's Niece.
  • Many people have claimed to have found Princess IKZ in-game, though evidence points towards her being more than likely just cut content.
  • A few NPCs such as two Chez Porter sons and a man at the Downes' ranch were spread around the internet as being cut content, though this has since been found to be false.
  • Rumors spread about online that the Giant was intended to either be Bigfoot or the Neanderthal, though following the discovery of his model this has been proven false.
  • A widespread theory was that the Liver Chestnut Hungarian-Halfbred was Arthur's deceased horse Boadicea, however it was later proven that this horse was meant to be ridden by Alfredo Montez in Red Dead Online.

Leaks[]

  • Some photos from an earlier stage of the game (some of which can be seen in the pre-release screenshot gallery below) were leaked on various platforms such as Twitter and Reddit.
  • In 2016, an early version of the final game's map was released online. (Seen in the Locations gallery)
  • A leak detailing various details about the game- including Marston birthing a foal and one of the gang members being a spy for the Pinkertons- was posted by a user known as reddeadinsider, it also detailed the troublesome state of development of the game and listed some features that didn't make it in such as recruiting gang members like Abigail and Jack throughout the course of the game.[88]
  • A leaked document from Trusted Reviews mentioned various details of the game; most namely a battle royale mode which ended up being confirmed after the game's release.[89]
  • The GTA V source code leak included a small amount of Red Dead Redemption 2 animal source models and a texture.
