Nothing definitive is known about Gilroy's background. However, his deep Southern accent implies that he isn't native to the region, and some of his dialogue suggests that he is from a well-off family and had the opportunity to attend college but rejected it in favor of going on a Western "adventure", which ultimately left him impoverished and forced to earn a living as a manual laborer. He greatly regrets his decision.
Events of Red Dead Redemption[]
Gilroy can most often be found at the Pacific Union Railroad Camp, doing various jobs. However, he can also be occasionally found working at MacFarlane's Ranch or in Armadillo. He will always spawn at Rathskeller Fork, doing odd jobs or tending to the pigs at the end of the fort. After working hours, he may sit at the campfire, head to bed or go to the saloon for a rest.
Sometimes he can be find riding on a horseback or with a wagon with other NPC's throughout various places in New Austin and West Elizabeth.
The player may interact with him during two random encounters while traveling in the wilderness. The first has Gilroy and his dog sitting by themselves in camp. If approached, Gilroy will become agitated and eventually send his dog to attack the player while he fires at them. The other involves Gilroy being chased by dangerous predatory animals while he is unarmed. How the player reacts to these scenarios may affect their overall Honor.
In the mission "The Burning", Gilroy is one of the people at MacFarlane’s Ranch who is trying to rescue the horses and extinguish the fire before it burns the barn down.
Despite this, Gilroy will always spawn locked up behind bars at the Foreman's office a MacFarlane's. It is possible he is on parole.
