- The title comes from the saying: "Judge a man by the company he keeps", which is fitting since John Marston associates himself with the likes of Seth Briars, a graverobber, and Nigel West Dickens, a swindler. Also, Marston sees Seth surrounding himself with the "company" of undead.
- During the mission "Exodus in America", John's guide, Jake, says to him "I don't wanna judge a man by the company he keeps," referring to John's old friend Bill Williamson, who is now one of the most notorious outlaws in the region, and also the man who John has to hunt down.
