The Lantern is a item featured in Red Dead Redemption and a piece of equipment in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online.

Description[]

Lanterns, which burn some kind of oil, are occasionally used in place of electric lights. When shot or otherwise broken, they explode in a fireball similar to that caused by a fire bottle. The area immediately surrounding the lantern will burn for a short period and people touched by the flames will catch fire, sometimes being killed. The area that is burned will not be affected except for the appearance of a temporary black scorch mark.

Shooting a lantern inside the jurisdiction of law enforcement may cause the player to gain a bounty for vandalism. If an NPC is burned by the lantern, the player may be charged with assault or murder and gain a higher bounty.

Obtainable Lanterns in Red Dead Redemption 2[]

Photo Name Notes Acquisition
Default Lantern
Lantern This lantern will be in the player's satchel at all times, and cannot be discarded or left behind on the horse. This is given to the player at the start of the game, after completing the tutorial mission in both Redemption 2 and Online.
Electric Lantern
Electric Lantern While being identical in function to the default lantern, the orange glow will vary in intensity in certain directions to lead the player in the direction of the Robot. Given to the player during the mission "A Bright Bouncing Boy".
Old Lantern
Old Lantern This lantern is only used during the first mission of the game, and cannot be obtained through legitimate means otherwise. It functions the same as the regular lantern. Given during "Outlaws from the West", and taken away from the player shortly thereafter.
Miners hat
Miner's Hat The miner's hat is essentially an upgraded version of the lantern, as it allows both of the player's hands to remain free and does not have to be equipped in the weapon wheel. However, it can be knocked off easily when falling or in combat. It can be found inside the mine at Beryl's Dream after blowing up a pile of rocks with a detonator located near the entrance. It is next to the corpse of a dead miner. It can also be found next to the first body in the stranger mission "The Wisdom of the Elders - V".
Torch (RDR2)
Torch This serves as a temporary light source for the player, but is inferior to the default lantern in every way as it isn't possible to wield a weapon alongside this, and it will be lost permanently when dropped. The torch can typically be obtained from Murfrees or Nite Folk and is given to the player during select missions, but cannot be kept permanently and will be discarded once dropped.

Wagons and some NPC horses may also have lanterns attached to them, but these cannot be kept by the player.

Obtainable Lanterns in Red Dead Online[]

Photo Name Notes Acquisition
Glabella Lantern Promo
Glabella Lantern This functions identical to the default lantern. The Glabella Lantern can be acquired by the player by purchasing The Halloween Pass 2 in Red Dead Online for 20 Gold Bars. The lantern is then unlocked after reaching Rank 15 and can be claimed at the Fence.
Horse Lantern RDO
Horse Lantern This lantern attaches to your horse's breast collar for consistent, hands-free light when riding. Unlocks in the stables at Collector Rank 10, for the cost of 1 role token and $350

Strategy[]

In Red Dead, Lanterns can be useful during gunfights. If an enemy is next to a lantern (often crouching behind a crate with a lantern on top), it is advisable to shoot the lantern. If the enemy catches fire, he will lose much of his health, possibly dying, and be unable to shoot or run for a short period of time. Likewise, it is best to avoid getting too close to lanterns during gunfights as your enemies may have the same idea in mind.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, while the lantern cannot be used during combat, it is possible for the player to hold a lantern in one hand and a handheld gun in the other. This can be helpful in avoiding a ambush by a foe or animal.

Trivia[]

  • Throwing Knives and Tomahawks can knock down hanging lanterns, but not ignite them.
  • Knocking down a lantern will not cause it to explode. Only bullets, arrows and explosives can ignite them.
  • Lanterns do not have to be lit to ignite.
  • In real life, shooting a lit oil lantern will cause, at most, a very small fireball that would burn for a very brief moment. More likely, however, nothing would happen apart from the lantern being damaged or destroyed.
  • If a lantern is against a wall when it ignites, the fire will also occur on the opposite side of the wall, so be mindful of that when shooting at them.
  • Hanging lanterns can be knocked down by hitting them with your head when running under them. They can then be slowly pushed to a desired location, time permitting.
  • When a lantern is next to a box of Dynamite and the lantern is shot, it may take a few seconds for the flames to light the fuse of the Dynamite, resulting in the box exploding.
  • Sometimes the lantern will not appear in the weapon wheel and will automatically be left on the horse.
  • In Red Dead Redemption, a throwable lantern and a horse lantern were cut from the game.
