Lower Montana River is a river featured in Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Red Dead Online. The river acts as the border between the New Austin and West Elizabeth territories.

Background[]

The river begins with the Aurora Basin in the Tall Trees region of the West Elizabeth territory. It then flows southward between West Elizabeth and New Austin, north of MacFarlane's Ranch. The river splits into two and flows into Flat Iron Lake between Thieves Landing and Quaker's Cove. The lower sections of the river support a massive Steelhead Trout population, which can be fished with great profit to the player.

By 1911, the area surrounding the river has been built up somewhat, the Tanner's Span railway bridge has since been built further upstream from Mason's Bridge, both of which serve the Blue Line (Pacific Union Railroad Co.). The Pacific Union Railroad Camp has also been built not far from the north bank of the river at some point between 1907 and 1911.

Trivia[]

  • The Lower Montana River is possibly based off the Pecos River, based on its proximity to the San Luis River, which similarly resembles the Rio Grande, in addition to its rough geographic correspondence.
