Lower Montana River is a river featured in Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Red Dead Online. The river acts as the border between the New Austin and West Elizabeth territories.

Background

The river begins with the Aurora Basin in the Tall Trees region of the West Elizabeth territory. It then flows southward between West Elizabeth and New Austin, north of MacFarlane's Ranch. The river splits into two and flows into Flat Iron Lake between Thieves Landing and Quaker's Cove. The lower sections of the river support a massive Steelhead Trout population, which can be fished with great profit to the player. The Lower Montana is one of the shortest major rivers in Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Trivia

  • The Lower Montana River is possibly based off the Pecos River, based on its proximity to the San Luis River, which similarly resembles the Rio Grande, in addition to its rough geographic correspondence.
