Unlike its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption 2 contains missions, items and other content that can be permanently missed in a save file unless obtained, studied or otherwise interacted with during a certain time-frame. While anything on this list is not required for 100% Completion, a player may be interested in completing and collecting everything available in the game. As there is no official list of everything that's missable, this list may be missing some content or certain content may be available even outside these time-frames.

Animals

America Animals

The parakeet can be found primarily in western Bayou Nwa, especially near Bayall Edge and Hagen Orchards. Study/kill and pick it up to fill the compendium before killing 25 of them.

Guarma Animals

All macaws spawn near the waterfall near the camp, the booby often flies above the river, and snakes spawn in the vegetation down the hill from the camp. Study and skin/pluck all animals to fill the compendium.

Note: The Fer-de-Lance snake - often thought to be exclusive to Guarma - can be found in Stillwater Creek.

Note: Guarma also houses the elusive Green Turtle, which goes unseen during regular gameplay and has no compendium entry. If the player uses glitches to return to Guarma, it is possible to find, study, kill and skin one, but the only effect this has on the game is that the protagonist adds a picture of it in the journal. On PC version, this glitch has been fixed and the player can not meet this turtle anymore.

  • "The Widow of Willard's Rest": (Available after A Fork in the Road)
    • All encounters can only be seen by visiting Charlotte Balfour 3 times with Arthur Morgan, and then visiting her once as John Marston in the epilogue
    • If the player never meets Charlotte as Arthur, only the first 2 encounters will be available in the epilogue.
    • If the player meets Charlotte as Arthur but doesn't complete all encounters, she cannot be encountered in the epilogue as she has passed away before 1907.

Activities appear at camp randomly, and become unavailable at the end of each chapter once the gang relocates the camp.

Note: Pearson's rabbit request is considered to be somewhat glitched, as some players report not getting the jacket once the rabbit is given to Pearson, so save before returning it. It's also been suggested to not skin the rabbit. To give it to him, first use the "Give request" option in the dialog menu and then donate it at his table like other items.

Hats, Weapons, Documents, Valuables & Trinkets

Hats

Note that the mission-specific hats are not guaranteed to spawn, but restarting a checkpoint refreshes NPC equipment. If no enemies drop the hat, simply die/otherwise restart the checkpoint and try again.

Classic Raccoon Mountain Hat Worn by Jon in Smithfield's Saloon While the hat does spawn in the epilogue, it can only be saved to the wardrobe during the first 6 chapters. The reason for this is unknown.
Bucket Hat Worn by the workers at Appleseed Timber Company Worn by the workers at Appleseed Timber Company, available until chapter 6 or until completing all three stages of Appleseed Timber Company event area. It can also be found on riders in the West Elizabeth during the Epilogue, Part 1/2 (randomly).
Military Mountie Hat Picked up during a mission Fort Wallace or worn by enemies during the missions Favored Sons, The King's Son and My Last Boy. If the player manages to glitch into the fort in the epilogue, multiple enemies will be wearing it, however it will never glow thus making it unsaveble in the epilogue.
Newsboy Cap Picked up during a mission Only available during the missions "The Sheep and the Goats", "An Honest Mistake" and "Just a Social Call". Several enemies should be wearing it, just pick one up or sometime can found on the oil wagon driver near the bridge between Strawberry and Riggs Station in chapter 6 (randomly).
Fisherman's Hat Worn by Jeremy Gill Either complete the stranger mission "A Fisher of Fish", or kill Jeremy with dynamite before triggering the quest. The latter is recommended, as his hat may fly too far into the San Luis River to be picked up after the quest ends.
Liberty Hat Picked up during a mission Worn by enemy while chasing the stagecoach in the mission "An American Pastoral Scene" (randomly) or worn by a hogtied man during the stranger mission "A Fine Night For It". Dying after the final wave of enemies respawns the player back before the wave, allowing one to quickly try their luck again.
Sun Hat Picked up during a mission Worn by enemies during the missions "Savagery Unleashed", "A Kind and Benevolent Despot", "Hell Hath No Fury" and "Paradise Mercifully Departed" in Guarma (chapter 5). Although this hat is technically missable, as Guarma is not meant to be revisited, there are many simple glitches to get back to Guarma and get this hat.
Worn Flat Cap Get it knocked off and pick it up again John will be wearing the hat during the mission "The Wheel", but it isn't part of the wardrobe. Get it knocked off and pick it up again. Note that antagonizing and combat are limited in this mission, so an animal attack (such as from one of the horses in Strawberry) may be needed to knock the hat off.
John's Gambler's Hat Get it knocked off and pick it up again John will be wearing the hat after the mission "Simple Pleasures", but it isn't part of the wardrobe. Get it knocked off and pick it up again. If picked up as Arthur while the player has John as a companion the hat (if knocked off) will not be saved to the wardrobe.

Weapons

Rare Shotgun Wielded by an antisocial stranger in a house northwest of Annesburg. The player has to kill him or knock him out before picking it up.
Rare Rolling Block Rifle Wielded by a bounty hunter inside the Braithwaite barn during the mission "Magicians for Sport".
Granger's Revolver During "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", Emmet Granger drops it upon death. Simply pick it up.
Midnight's Pistol During The Noblest of Men, and a Woman, Billy Midnight drops the gun upon death. Pick it up.

Wedding Certificate Found in the loot box on a crashed wagon at the base of the Monto's Rest cliff, just northeast of Strawberry.
Property Deed Can be taken from a Percy Whitsickle's table at end of the second encounter of the Central Union Railroad event area.

Warning: Taking the Property Deed will make the event area stuck in second encounter and cannot continue to third encounter.

Jail Ledger Can be taken after starting Ellie Anne Swan bounty hunting mission before end of chapter 6 and after hogtying or killing Sheriff Curtis Malloy. The book is on Sheriff Curtis Malloy's desk in the Valentine Sheriff's Office.
Arroyo's Map Can be looted from one of Arroyo's man at the beginning of the Joaquín Arroyo bounty hunting mission. The treasure map will disappear from the satchel after the player has completed the bounty hunting mission.

Note: Can not be kept as a player's document after completing the bounty hunting mission.

Rambles Through Woods and Plains Can be taken from Arthur's tent until chapter 6.
Zoological Compendium Can be taken from Arthur's tent until chapter 6.

Valuables

Item How to obtain
Antique Watch During "Money Lending and Other Sins I", while visiting Wróbel, open the drawer that contains the watch but do not take it. Instead collect the debt with other valuables and leave the area. Come back and take the watch (glitch).
Pen Obtainable only if the player spares Jimmy Brooks in the mission "Polite Society, Valentine Style".

Note: The item will disappear from the satchel after the player has completed the mission "Red Dead Redemption".

Native American Ring Can be looted from a drunk man who talks about Fort Riggs at a campfire random encounter.
Penelope's Bracelet The player can accept it as reward for completing the mission "The Course of True Love".
Gold Shield It can be taken from above the fireplace in the first room on left side during the mission "Blood Feuds, Ancient and Modern".
Lion's Paw It can be taken as a reward after killing a Lion in the stranger mission "He's British, of Course - IV"
Giant Boar Tusk It can be taken as a reward after killing a Giant Boar in the stranger mission "The Veteran - IV".

Trinkets

Rescue Bill Williamson Unique Random Encounter

In chapter 2, after completing the mission "The First Shall Be Last", while not an activity in that it's not started on the camp, Javier Escuella can randomly ride to the player roaming the wilderness and request help rescuing Bill Williamson from bounty hunters. This will only happen before chapter 5.

Event Areas

Event areas are locations that change over time. Each areas has several stages of development, which the player can witness by visiting at semi-regular intervals as the player progresses through the main storyline. In most case, the player is invited to intervene in a specific way to facilitate the location's advance to its next step. There are three event area locations that the player can do the missions until chapter 6 and the last stage available after epilogue.

Bounty Hunting

Anthony Foreman

In the Epilogue, the Bounty Hunting mission concerning Anthony Foreman will obviously be unavailable if Arthur killed him in "No, No and Thrice, No".

Point of Interest

Braithwaites' Secret

There is an outhouse that is located near Braithwaite Manor; a strange woman named Gertrude Braithwaite is locked up in the outhouse. The player has to inspect her as Arthur and write a portrait of her as a Point of Interest in his journal; otherwise, the outhouse won't be inspected if using John, as her skeletal remains will be contained within the rotting structure.

100% Discovery of O'Driscoll Boys

The O'Driscoll Boys will be replaced by Laramie Gang after Chapter 6. If the player wants to reach 100% discovery of O'Driscoll Boys in Compendium, they have to do before completing of Chapter 6.

Secret Gold Bar Location

Prisoners at Crawdad Willies Shack

Two prisoners chained together murder the homeowner after a failed robbery and can be found outside following the trail of blood from the slain homeowner. You will find one of the prisoners is killed by the owner. If you help the living prisoner by shooting the chain, he will give you the location of a gold bar in between three rocks southwest of the Rhodes water tower across the railroad tracks. Be warned, if you are in the area with the random encounter activated and wait too long, you will find both prisoners dead.

Reward in the Mission

Buell

If the player wishes to keep Buell until the end of the game, it is recommended then to only start part IV of the Stranger mission "The Veteran" after the epilogue, as any horse previously owned before it starts will be lost.

Random Encounters

Pitfall Trap

In Guarma (Chapter V), Arthur may fall in a pitfall trap set up by the soldiers. Two soldiers approach the pit and with their weapons drawn at him. After shooting the two soldiers, more soldiers will arrive to pursue the player.

Soldiers Pursuing Two Escapees

In Guarma (Chapter V), Soldiers can be seen shooting two escapees and have orders to capture the two men dead or alive. If Arthur is spotted by the soldiers they will identify him as an escapee and open fire on him.
