Oh, oh, and remember, redemption is possible. If you search for it. Guess the question is, is it desirable?
Old Man Jones

Old Man Jones is a central character featured in Red Dead Online.

History[]

Background[]

Old Man Jones is a philosophically inclined wanderer and "would-be arbiter". At some point before 1898, he became associated with Horley and Jessica LeClerk. He takes an unspecified interest in observing the protagonist's actions as well as serving as their self-appointed moral guide.

Events of Red Dead Online[]

A Land of Opportunities[]

The player first encounters Old Man Jones when meeting back up with Horley in Blackwater after their work with Clay Davies. Jones appears upon their arrival, vocally skeptical of their intentions before suggesting several situations involving sheriffs across the region in which they could lend a hand while Horley continues to investigate the conspiracy behind the murder of Philip LeClerk.

If the player returns with high Honor: Jones will comment that while they are no saint, they are an honorable individual and suggest they assist Marshal Tom Davies.

If the player returns with low Honor: Jones will remark on their dishonorable actions but claim they can still be redeemed before departing. Horley will subsequently refer them to seek work with Samson Finch.

Path of the Gunslinger[]

If the player has chosen to remain honorable, he will spontaneously greet them shortly after they arrive at Tall Trees to meet with Tom Davies, however, he is quickly dismissed by the marshal.

After the later apprehension of Alfredo Montez and the outlaw's subsequent imprisonment in Valentine, Jones passes on the message from Tom to "bring a goddamn posse" to protect the town.

At some point following the unexpected killing of Alfredo at the hands of Tom, he catches word that Davies has been captured by the Del Lobo Gang, who plan on publicly lynching him in retaliation. The player is informed of this by Jones as they go rescue him and Sheriff Freeman in Tumbleweed, which they are successful in doing. Tom subsequently thanks him for his part in the rescue and rides off with him in the wagon leaving The Scratching Post.

Path of the Outlaw[]

If the player maintains low honor, Jones will approach them at Samson Finch's camp and briefly argue with Samson while speaking of their capacity to seek a more honorable path. Upon its conclusion, he will remind them again that they can always visit him to turn their morals around.

Frontier Pursuits[]

Jones appears after the player first approaches Madam Nazar's wagon, claiming that she is a fraud and a liar. After she waves him off, he warns the player to think about what they're getting themselves into if they agree to work for her before departing.

Character[]

Personality[]

I just like watching what other folks is, that's all.
Old Man Jones to Tom Davies

Jones appears and is often considered crazy due to his odd behavior and visibly advanced age. Further, he maintains a habit of speaking impractically if not peculiar. However, he is morally knowledgeable, as shown in his implication of observing the untamed world and the consequential actions performed by the player. He preaches that achieving redemption is possible if sought but also says more cynical statements regarding the conflicts and individuals around him.

While Jones at one point claims he "has no character", he more often than not hints at having a preference for observing morally just actions. As such, he more frequently appears alongside Marshal Tom Davies despite being critical of his vigilant behavior and acts in aversion to outlaw Samson Finch, only remaining in the presence of the latter to dispute his dishonorable intentions. Similarly, despite holding a fair amount of respect for both Jessica LeClerk and Horley, he warns them to not corrupt the player with their vengeful agenda.

His loose connections to individuals relevant to the protagonist and interactions ultimately make him represent something of a moral compass for the player.

Appearance[]

Old Man Jones is, as his name suggests, an elderly man with a large grey goatee and long dark grey hair. His outfit consists of an unkempt a yellow shirt with a similar pair of boots and tattered blue pants. He also wears a brown pistol belt with a sawed-off shotgun holster and knife sheath. He also sports a bowler hat.

Trivia[]

  • The player can visit Old Man Jones at his Honor Shop to instantly switch Honor level for a fee of 3 Gold Bars.
  • At the beginning of the mission "Destroyed By Grief", it is stated that Amos Lancing sent the request to hold the meeting in Blackwater through Jones, though even he warned not to trust it.
  • While Jones states at the end of the mission "More Than One Way To Earn a Buck" that he can be found in Blackwater, he does not have an Honor Shop in the settlement.
  • Sometimes an NPC will mention Old Man Jones, stating that he nearly killed his wife the other night.[citation needed] This is the only mention of Jones in the game's Story Mode, and it directly contrasts from the demeanor and attitude he displays in Red Dead Online.
  • Old Man Jones rides an Arabian with a Gray coat that can't be found anywhere else in the game.
