Mustangs are a type of multi-class horse. They can be identified by their lean frame and distinct withers. This breed is known for being loyal but hard to train. They have traits of both work and war horses, so they are strong and will not be easily frightened. They generally have great health and stamina as well as decent speed, but only average acceleration.

The wild free roaming horse of the plains, the Mustang is a classic of the Old West. They are healthy with high stamina, surefooted, and suitable for work or war. With a low-set tail and round, dense hooves, they are very durable and, while difficult to break, are extremely loyal when forming a bond with a rider.

Maggie[]

Oddly, Maggie, the horse owned by Lenny Summers, is labeled as a Mustang despite noticeably lacking the feathering that all the other in-game Mustangs have. She is also smaller than the others, has a unique model, and sports what the game calls a "Light Palomino" coat. She can be found within the gang's camp, but not typically around the other gang's horses.

Hera[]

The horse of Sadie Adler in 1907. Hera has a "Dark Bay Roan" coat and is fairly large compared to other Mustangs. John Marston comments that this horse looks "mean", to which Sadie concurs. This horse can only be seen in missions or near to where Sadie is.

Others[]

In Red Dead Online, Marshal Tom Davies rides a Mustang. His horse is a stallion with a unique "Golden Dun" coat additionally possessing markings identical to the Tiger Striped Bay.

Trivia[]

The Mustang is one of the signature horses of the Del Lobo Gang, and they can be seen riding both Wild Bays and Grullo Duns in three random encounters with the gang including one in Armadillo, one involving the gang riding through a random spot in New Austin, and one where three Del Lobos try to solicit a prostitute who will ride away on one of the Mustangs if the encounter is allowed to play out.
The Tiger Striped Bay is one of the rarest mounts, and can be found west of Rio del Lobo Rock and southeast of Fort Mercer. Paytah also rides this horse in "Eastward Bound".
The Buckskin Mustang may be a reference to the titular character from the 2002 Dreamworks film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, which stars a similar looking mustang barring the feathers.
Despite nearly all Mustangs in the game featuring heavy feathering, Mustangs do not typically have feathers and those that do typically only have light feathering which may increase slightly during the winter.
Mustangs can be found in New Austin, West Elizabeth, and New Hanover though they are most commonly found in New Austin.
The Mustang appears to be an amalgamation of different colonial Spanish horse breeds. The dorsal stripe present on many of this horse's coats is a hallmark of the Prior Mountain mustangs, however the horse's feathering is more along the lines of a Spanish Barb or Canadian Pacer.
Besides the Arabian, the Mustang is one of the few horses that NPC's will give compliments to, with the other two being the Turkoman and Missouri Fox Trotter. Coincidentally, the latter three are all multi-class horses.
