Criminals Escape from Jail
Two criminals escaped from prison in Kettering, Ohio in broad daylight yesterday. Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews were arrested after a string of confidence tricks in town over the past few weeks. The men, who had been posing as international merchants, duped twelve local men and woman out of approximately $300 of shares in a fictitious Portuguese shipping company.
It is not yet known how they escaped. Sheriff Carmichael, who was found bound and naked in their jail cell, is refusing to comment other than to say he is extremely embarrassed. The two men are still at large and anybody with information to their whereabouts is urged to contact the authorities immediately.
Trivia[]
The city of Kettering, Ohio technically did not exist in 1877. It was founded in 1841 as Van Buren Township, but was not renamed Kettering until 1952. Also, the city took its name from inventor Charles F. Kettering, who was not born until 1914.
