New Hanover is one of the five American states in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online and the second largest territory in the game.

Description

New Hanover is characterized by dense forests and open plains, comprised of three regions: northeast is where the densely forested Cumberland Forest is located; right in the center are the prairie plains of The Heartlands; to the east is the hilly and foggy Roanoke Ridge.

Similar to the state of New Austin, the territory bears minimal presence of modernization. It contains three settlements; Valentine, a livestock hub, Annesburg, a mining town, in addition to the small, run-down trading post of Van Horn. Additionally, there are numerous ranches and homesteads dotted around the state due to its lush and fertile grassland, most notably Emerald Ranch. The state's name is of German origin, as is Annesburg; this might imply that it is inhabited by some German settlers.

It is the second largest territory in Red Dead Redemption 2 and, as such, there is a notable amount of wildlife and outlaws roaming its rural regions. In the heart of the state, the oil company Cornwall Kerosene & Tar, run by Leviticus Cornwall, manages a large factory which is heavily guarded and almost impossible to infiltrate without being attacked.

Geography

New Hanover is bordered by Flat Iron Lake to the southwest and the Dakota River separating Ambarino and New Hanover to the northeast, Lemoyne to the south and Grizzlies East to the east, bordering Cumberland Forest and Roanoke Ridge.

Cumberland Forest lies less elevated compared to Grizzlies East, and serves as a transition between the mountainous woodlands from the plains. The region is one of the smallest in the game.

Roanoke Ridge lies near the Lannahechee River and is an area of deciduous woodland, often covered in mist. It features a thriving mining industry, as evident in both Annesburg and some of the villages.

The Heartlands is characterized by rolling hills and plains. It is not so highly elevated compared to other regions, aside from the buttes in the heart of the area and the riverbanks near the Dakota River.

New Hanover, for the most part, is a generalized Great Plains state. It combines elements of various states including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota.

The Heartlands is strongly based on the Great Plains region of the United States; the eroded chalk bluffs are reminiscent of the Pawnee National Grassland and the Wichita Mountains. Additionally, the grassy plains and forests are reminiscent of many areas in Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, such as Green Country or the Colorado Foothills around Loveland Colorado in the east and Douglas County and the town of Castle Rock in the west, and Valentine is a typical cattle boom town of this area.
Cumberland Forest is based on the Black Hills of South Dakota and the Pike National Forest in Colorado; the higher elevation of this area, combined with its pine trees and lush grasslands, are typical of this region.
Roanoke Ridge is based on the Ozarks of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Further supporting this is its positioning to Lemoyne (based on Louisiana) and the coal mining industry, which peaked in Arkansas at the turn of the century.
Overall, despite mixing many elements of frontier states, New Hanover's geographic placement roughly corresponds to that of Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Red Dead Redemption 2

New Hanover is first introduced to the player near the end of Chapter One, when the Van der Linde gang relocates from Colter in the mission, “Eastward Bound,” in which they flee Ambarino after the blizzard ended. The gang sets up camp at Horseshoe Overlook in the Heartlands, near the livestock town of Valentine. The gang spends the majority of Chapter Two in New Hanover. Morale is high around the camp as Arthur and the gang perform various successful heists before being confronted by Pinkertons and Leviticus Cornwall, forcing them to relocate to Clemens Point in Lemoyne.

The gang returns to New Hanover in “Sodom? Back to Gomorrah,” when Arthur, Bill, Lenny, and Karen return to Valentine to rob the bank they weren’t able to hit during Chapter Two. After the four successfully collect their money, Arthur also heads back to Downes Ranch to collect the debt from Thomas’s wife. Later in Chapter Three, Arthur, Dutch, and Micah head to the Heartlands for a parley with the O’Driscolls, but Arthur is kidnapped and held hostage at the Lone Mule Stead by Colm O’Driscoll. Arthur manages to escape, but with severe wounds and fatigue.

In Chapter Four, Arthur meets Rains Fall, his son Eagle Flies, and esteemed writer Evelyn Miller in Saint Denis. Rains Fall, who informs Arthur that Leviticus Cornwall is potentially acquiring the Wapiti Reservation illegally, and he requests Arthur meet his son at Cornwall Kerosene & Tar. In the subsequent mission, “American Fathers II,” Arthur returns to the Heartlands and breaks into Cornwall’s factory, stealing the incriminating documents. Arthur is caught and a shootout occurs, but he manages to escape with Eagle Flies and gives him the documents.

New Hanover is revisited in the mission, “That’s Murfree Country,” which concludes Chapter Five and initiates the following chapter. The Van der Linde gang sets up camp in Beaver Hollow, Roanoke Ridge, after Arthur and Charles eliminate the Murfree Brood from the caves. Roanoke Ridge plays an integral role for most of the chapter.

Eight years following the downfall of the Van der Linde gang, John Marston reunites with Sadie Adler at Smithfield’s Saloon in Valentine, where the two go bounty hunting. The two go bounty hunting again in the mission, “A Quick Favor for an Old Friend,” hunting for Ramón Cortez, and they find him at Painted Sky in West Elizabeth. The two pass through New Hanover as they turn in Cortez at the Rhodes jail. The final time New Hanover is featured in the main storyline is during the credits following “American Venom,” showing Agent Ross and Agent Fordham of the Bureau of Investigation interrogating individuals in order to find John Marston.

As seen on the state's flag, the Latin motto of New Hanover is "Labor Improbus Omnia Vincit", which translates to "Hard Work Conquers All" in English. In real life, all US States have a motto used in both English, and Latin for ceremonial purposes.
New Hanover takes its name from the real-life city of Hanover, Germany.
