Rdr outfits

Outfits are sets of clothing that can be worn by John and Jack Marston.

Overview[]

There are fifteen or sixteen outfits available in Red Dead Redemption, depending on which version is being played, with an additional four that can be added to the main game through DLC. Another four outfits are exclusive to Undead Nightmare, yielding a total of twenty-four possible outfits across all versions of the game.

Acquisition of nine of the non-DLC outfits counts towards 100% Completion as detailed below. Some outfits are awarded for completing missions, while other outfits must be earned. They are initially unlocked by advancing through missions and accumulating fame and honor, or by downloading them from DLC or pre-orders. Once unlocked, players must track down various "scraps" by completing mini-games such as Five Finger Fillet and Arm Wrestling. Other scraps must be discovered, purchased, or looted.

Some outfits give Marston bonuses or special abilities when worn. Accessories such as the bandana, which nullifies changes to the player's honor, and the bandolier, which increases the amount of ammo the player can carry, can be used in conjunction with outfits. Certain missions require the player to equip a particular outfit, but in general, any outfit may be worn.

Over time, outfits will get dusty. Dust transfers over to other outfits when the player changes clothes. Dust can be washed off by wading in water. The only outfit that does not gather dust is the Gentleman's Attire. The Duster Coat seems to gather dust quickly.

Changing Outfits[]

In general, the player can change between any unlocked outfit while in their safehouse. However, there is one exception; at the start of "The Outlaw's Return" when the player obtains the Rancher Outfit, the player won't be able to change outfits again until having completed the "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed", at which point all previously unlocked outfits become available to Jack, with the exception of John's Cowboy Outfit.

Outfit Variants Gallery[]

Most outfits in the game have a variant for both John and Jack, and nearly all outfits have variants with and without the bandolier. There are also two Undead outfit variants and a bandaged cowboy outfit, all of these variants (barring ones without the bandolier) can be seen below:

  • *Exclusive to Undead Nightmare.
  • **Available in Undead Nightmare and Redemption.

Trivia[]

  • All available outfits can be unlocked through cheat codes.
  • Many of the outfits feature belt loops on the pants, which is anachronistic to the time the game is set, as belt loops were not introduced until 1922 by the American denim brand Levi's. Belt loops are also present on many NPC character models.
  • Expert Hunter and Savvy Merchant are not unlockable before the West Elizabeth chapter. US Army Uniform, US Marshal Uniform, and Bureau Uniform can only be worn by Jack. However, John obtains the US Army Uniform in Undead Nightmare.
    • Despite this, John's Bureau and US Marshal Uniform remain in the game, possibly implying he was intended to wear these outfits at some point.
  • Besides the Cowboy Outfit, the Gentleman's Attire is the only outfit that can be changed into at the beginning of the game. This outfit can be obtained through the use of the Sharp Dressed Man cheat. However, when players loads a previous save, this outfit will be locked again until the player logs into the Rockstar social club, or until the cheat is reactivated.
  • The Mexican Poncho, Bollard Twins Outfit, Treasure Hunter Outfit, Bandito Outfit, Reyes' Rebels Outfit, Elegant Suit, US Marshal Uniform, US Army Uniform, and Rancher Clothing are required to achieve 100% completion.
  • The Duster Coat, Walton's Gang Outfit, Bureau Uniform, and Legend of the West are not required for 100% completion. Gentleman's Attire, Deadly Assassin, Expert Hunter, and Savvy Merchant are downloadable, and also not required for 100% completion.
    • The latter three outfits were contenders in a contest to choose a pre-order bonus. The voting ended on 15th February, 2010; the Deadly Assassin Outfit was named the winner. The other two outfits (Expert Hunter and Savvy Merchant) were subsequently released as free DLC; the Deadly Assassin Outfit would later be included in a free DLC (Compliments of the House).
  • All outfits physically show a different amount of Marston's equipment: the knife, satchel, and bandolier. Note that the satchel and lasso appear hand-in-hand.
    • All of Marston's equipment appears on Cowboy Outfit, Mexican Poncho, Reyes' Rebels Outfit, Walton's Gang Outfit, Bollard Twins Outfit, Treasure Hunter Outfit, Bandito Outfit, and Union Suit.
    • None of Marston's equipment appears on Elegant Suit, Bureau Uniform, Rancher Clothing, Gentleman's Attire, Deadly Assassin, Expert Hunter, Savvy Merchant, Undead Hunter, and Legend of the Apocalypse.
    • Only the bandolier appears on Duster Coat, Legend of the West, and Undead Cowboy.
    • Only the knife appears on US Marshal Uniform and US Army Uniform.
