I just been up at the canyon, spying like you said. I think I seen a couple of them rustlers. I think it was the Bollard Twins and a couple of Mexicans.

Pike's Basin is a canyon and prominent criminal hideout in Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Red Dead Online in the Hennigan's Stead region of the New Austin territory.

Background[]

Red Dead Redemption[]

Pike's Basin is part of the Leigh Johnson mission "Justice in Pike's Basin", where players have to save ranchers from the Bollard Twins Gang with the Marshal and his deputies.

After this mission has been completed, Pike's Basin becomes available as a gang hideout, where the player assists Errol Hewitt, a rancher, to get his family's cattle back from the Bollard Twins. Once completing Pike's Basin as a gang hideout, players can be rewarded money and a Sawed-off Shotgun. There are also multiple chests located in the main camp, and the two camps on the ridges to the south and west of the camp itself, each containing around $15-25.

The third segment of the Stranger side-mission "Funny Man" takes place in this location.

Undead Nightmare[]

Pike's Basin plays no role in Undead Nightmare. The area is mostly abandoned and it is not a town the player is required to clear of the undead hordes.

Multiplayer[]

This is also a multiplayer gang hideout where there are three weapon crates scattered around. Each of the crates is guarded by Bollard Twins men that the player must kill. After they are dead, the player must plant explosives and then protect against a wave of reinforcements that come to attack. After all three crates are blown and all men are dead, the mission is finished and the reward can be up to 2000 XP.

Outlaws to the End[]

It is a location in the Outlaws to the End co-op mission "The Herd".

Red Dead Redemption 2[]

Pike's basin is visited during the epilogue mission "An Honest Day's Labors", where James Langton and his bounty hunters have camped out after stealing a bounty from Sadie Adler, a criminal called Shane Finley, intending to meet with more of his men then hand Finley over to State Troopers. Sadie and John then ambush Langton and his men to recapture Finley, killing him and then taking Finley to Blackwater to collect his bounty from Chief Oswald Dunbar of the Blackwater Police Department.

Red Dead Online[]

The location serves as a gang hideout.

Notes[]

These following information only pertains to Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Pike's Basin is marked on the map.
  • On the northwest side of the basin is the Hennigan's Stead, Pike's Basin Bone, on a slightly elevated plateau.

Tips and Tricks[]

  • The waves of reinforcements at the weapon crates cluster very close together as they come to you down the basin; using Dead Eye with a high-capacity weapon (a Henry or Evans repeater is best), pan across them for several seconds and paint each one in turn. After the rapid burst of fire, quickly target and eliminate any survivors. In this way you can very rapidly eliminate an entire group of enemies and gain a high kill combo with little effort, and often get disarms and hat shots included. An alternative method, with a little practice is to throw a stick of dynamite into the middle of the group--handy if you have dynamite, but don't have enough Dead Eye in your meter.
  • The reinforcements usually have some good weapons, such as the Schofield and Double-Action revolvers, and Henry and Evans Repeaters, making this hideout a good one to acquire decent weapons in the lower levels of multiplayer. The high points reward means you level up quickly too, and it's conveniently near MacFarlane's Ranch, a common location to start a session in.
  • After Update 1.03, repeating this gang hideout is one of the fastest ways to level up in Multiplayer.
  • After each crate is blown, kill all reinforcements because all enemies must be killed to complete the gang hideout.
  • If someone enters the basin while another person is already there, it's prone to glitching and making an enemy spawn inside a rock face. Best case scenario is the enemy can be killed with a stick of dynamite placed so the blast radius gets them. Worst case scenario is you have to leave the basin and re-enter to start over.
  • Even though there is a bit of water and moisture in the bottom of the basin, the map doesn't show this. This is strange because on other dry river beds, like Dewberry Creek for example, water is displayed on the map.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • From 1870 to 1901, there was a basin named "Pike's Basin", and looked very similar to the one in Red Dead Redemption. Pike's Basin was owned by outlaws but was destroyed in 1901 for housing space.
  • Pike's Basin could be based on the Hole-in-the-Wall pass which was also been used as a hideout for several outlaw gangs.
  • Pike's Basin may also be based on the location of Bad Bessie in Red Dead Revolver due to their similar appearances.
  • A Pike is a type of a fish, and basin usually means a bowl for liquid. This could imply that, during the original settlement in the area, Pike's Basin was once filled with water.

Red Dead Redemption[]

  • In Multiplayer, there is a glitch where one of the enemies will spawn in the ground and will be unable to be shot at, but can shoot the player, the best method to kill him is by throwing dynamite at the red dot on the radar.
  • The enemies that appear north of the main camp are not required to be killed if the player never discovers them, although this is only true if the player initiated the gang hideout without meeting Errol Hewitt first.
  • Situated in the main camp is a pen where Hewitt's cattle is being kept. The doors to open the pen are locked unless the player keeps Hewitt alive long enough for him to retrieve his cattle; however, if the player completes the hideout by clearing the enemies first and then meeting with Hewitt at the canyon fork, the doors to the pen will remain locked.
  • Depending on how the player completes the hideout, the location of the "completion screen" will be different.
    • If the player completed the hideout by meeting with Hewitt first and clearing the enemies along the way, the completion screen will show the main camp; alternatively, if the player completed the hideout by clearing the enemies and then meeting with Hewitt, the completion screen will show the canyon fork.
  • At the end of the westernmost canyon is a trail that leads up to a plateau which overlooks Cholla Springs.
    • If the player goes to the plateau while the gang hideout is active and moves too close to the edge of the cliff, the mission will "fail" as this area is not considered by the game to actually be part of Pike's Basin.
    • The player can set up a campsite (basic or improved) on the plateau even though it is relatively close to the gang hideout.
  • Despite being a gang hideout, many wild animals can be found at the main camp and along the canyons of Pike's Basin, including snakes, rabbits, coyotes, deer, and buck. These animals may appear while the player is clearing the hideout as well as when after it is completed.
    • If the player enters the hideout from the southeast entrance which overlooks the main camp, it is possible that coyotes will spawn in the pen along with the cattle.
    • Additionally, the plateau at the end of the westernmost canyon may have animals such as foxes, boars, wolves, and cougars.

Undead Nightmare[]

  • Pike's Basin is the only gang hideout in Red Dead Redemption that does not have a role in Undead Nightmare. Despite this, there are some oddities in the game that may imply a bigger role during development.
    • If the player dies while in or near Pike's Basin and selects to "Restart Near Town" on the death screen, they will respawn on the road that runs south of the basin. This is strange since Pike's Basin is not part of the Town Saving side-missions, though it is treated as a town anyways in this situation.
    • Unlike most abandoned places in Undead Nightmare, there are many objects and structures in Pike's Basin that are set ablaze, a trait that all towns part of the Town Saving side-missions share.
    • In addition, Pike's Basin is still listed as a "secondary" location on the menu map even though there is nothing for the player to do here. In comparison, all places (excluding Cochinay and Blackwater) that are required to be saved are also listed as either "secondary" locations or major towns. The cemeteries that must be cleansed as part of the story are also listed as "secondary locations".
    • All clues listed above seem to point towards Pike's Basin having a bigger role during the development of Undead Nightmare before any potential plans were scaled back.
  • Several horse trails and paths in Pike's Basin are added to the menu map in Undead Nightmare; these pathways physically existed in Red Dead Redemption but were not drawn up in the menu map of it.
  • In Undead Nightmare, Pike's Basin is one of many abandoned places where the undead hordes sometimes appear. One spawning point for the undead is the canyon fork at the western entrance of the basin; the other spawning point is along the westernmost canyon.
  • In Undead Nightmare, there is an uncommon glitch where the tents at the main camp will not appear, however the tent sticks will remain in place.
