The Rabbit is an animal found in Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. However, in both games it is the jackrabbit of the American Southwest, which – however – is not a rabbit, but a hare.

Red Dead Redemption[]
Rabbits are small, non-threatening animals that will flee from the player.
Red Dead Redemption 2[]
The black-tailed jackrabbit can be found in a variety of habitats across the states. As herbivores, their diet consists of vegetation forbs, buds, twigs, bark, and crops, which is why they are considered pests. A Varmint Rifle is the ideal weapon to use when hunting rabbits. Rabbit pelts can be used for crafting, and their gamey meat can be used for cooking.[1]

Red Dead Redemption[]
In the missions "New Friends, Old Problems", John Marston must help Bonnie MacFarlane kill rabbits that have been eating her garden.
Red Dead Redemption 2[]
As part of the mission "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego", Arthur must catch a rabbit to provide food for him and Hosea.
Locations[]
They can be found in almost every location throughout both games.
Challenges[]
In Red Dead Redemption, killing rabbits is a requirement for Rank 2 of both the Single Player Sharpshooter Challenges and the Multiplayer Sharpshooter Challenges.
In Redemption 2, three Perfect quality Rabbit pelts must be acquired to complete Rank 2 of the Master Hunter Challenges.
Tips[]
- In Red Dead Redemption one bullet from any weapon kills a rabbit due to its small size; however, steadying a shot is the difficult part, as they don't tend to stand still.
- Rabbits also run away from a speeding horse or someone who is running. It is recommended to walk slowly or crouch while searching for them.
- As small animals, rabbits are easily obliterated in Red Dead Redemption. Even shotguns have to be used at medium range to leave a carcass, and most rifles will destroy a rabbit at any range.
- The best weapons to hunt rabbits in Red Dead Redemption are the revolvers/pistols or throwing knives.
- In Red Dead Redemption 2, the Varmint Rifle is the ideal weapon to kill a rabbit with, since it can kill it in one shot, and will not spoil the pelt.
Trivia[]
- Confusingly, the HUD icon for the jackrabbit in Redemption 2 is of a cottontail rabbit.
- The Jackalope in Redemption is the same as a rabbit, except it has Buck antlers, and its running animation's speed is increased.
- Rabbits do not appear in Undead Nightmare.
