Roanoke Ridge is a constituent region of the New Hanover territory in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online.

Description[]

Roanoke Ridge is located in western New Hanover, bordering the Heartlands and Grizzlies East to the west, and Lemoyne to the south. Along the region’s eastern border is the Lannahechee River.

With rugged and mountainous terrain, Roanoke Ridge is a heavily forested area. The hills are abundant with coal and precious metals, making mining one of the largest industries in the area. Aside from Annesburg and Van Horn Trading Post, the region is quite isolated, with a few scattered villages that have little contact with civilization. The isolation has allowed vicious gangs like the Murfree Brood to roam the area, since the law rarely pays attention to the poor community in Roanoke Ridge. As a result, most travelers veer away from Roanoke Ridge, only staying near settlements.

Although the region features moderate temperatures most of the time, temperatures here can plummet below zero during heavy rain. Temperatures can also soar above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, especially around Van Horn. Most days vary in weather, oftentimes having sun, fog, and rain in the same day.

Trivia[]

  • Roanoke Ridge is based on the Ouachita Mountains and Ozark Plateaus, which combine to create the U.S. Interior Highlands. The real-life area is located in eastern Oklahoma, western Arkansas, and Southern Missouri. It is well known for comprising one of the very few mountainous regions to exist between the Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains.
  • Roanoke Ridge has a bustling coal industry; this is consistent with the real-life history of Arkansas, as coal production in Arkansas roughly peaked during the time Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place.
  • The real-life U.S. Interior Highlands in itself is divided into three distinct mountain ranges:
  • Roanoke Ridge shares its name with the real-life location of Roanoke Island, and the historical quandry of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, when the first English Colony disappeared without a trace in the 1590s.
