Rufus works as a proud ranch hand at the MacFarlane's Ranch, but he has also been known to work at other ranches and places around New Austin on the side.
Events of Red Dead Redemption[]
Rufus can be found around MacFarlane's Ranch, normally playing Horseshoes. However, he can also commonly be found working at the ranch, like fixing tables or crates with a hammer and tending to the livestock. Rufus also works for the Foreman's Office, sending Marston on Nightwatch jobs with the dog Charlie. He can also be encountered working at Rathskeller Fork or Ridgewood Farm at times. He may also be encountered drinking at the saloon in Armadillo at nights, when his shift is over or just wondering around town. Interestingly, Rufus can also commonly spawn in Thieves' Landing, wondering around town or chatting with citizens and criminals alike at the docks, the saloon or the brothel, despite the town's large presence of the Bollard Twins gang who are known to steal cattle from the MacFarlane's.
Sometimes, with low honor, Rufus will challenge Marston to a duel in West Elizabeth, claiming that Marston killed his father. Rufus is also seen riding with a horse through Blackwater and other various locations through West Elizabeth, probably buying supplies for the ranches he works on.
In Undead Nightmare, Emerson will say that he and Rufus are brothers which could be possible based on their appearance, although they have different surnames, so it is possible they are actually half-brothers.
