Sharpshooter Challenges in Redemption 2 are gameplay challenges which involve weapon accuracy, mainly with firearms, in the single-player of Red Dead Redemption 2.

These challenges must be done in order, progress made before they are activated does not count.

Challenges[]

  • Rank 1: Kill three flying birds.
  • Rank 2: Kill two different animal species in the same Dead Eye use.
  • Rank 3: Kill five flying birds while on a moving train.
  • Rank 4: Kill an enemy at least 80 feet away with a thrown tomahawk.
  • Rank 5: Kill six animals without switching or reloading your weapon.
  • Rank 6: Kill someone at least 660 feet away with a long scoped rifle.
  • Rank 7: Get seven headshots in a row.
  • Rank 8: Disarm three enemies without reloading or switching your weapon.
  • Rank 9: Shoot three people's hats off in the same Dead Eye use.
  • Rank 10: Kill three flying birds with three consecutive long scoped shots.

Rank 1[]

Kill three flying birds.

Reward: Sharpshooter Bandolier

Rank 2[]

Kill two different animal species in the same Dead Eye use.

Reward: 25 Dead Eye XP and $5

Rank 3[]

Kill five flying birds while on a moving train.

Reward: Sharpshooter Holster

If the player stands on the platform at the front of the train, the locomotive driver will get angry and tell them to get off, and the guards inside the train will be alerted, but none of them will be able to get to the player, and as a result, they can shoot all the birds you want without getting a bounty.
The player can get on this platform just before the train leaves a station and jump while it is moving, so the guards will not chase them.

Rank 4[]

Kill an enemy at least 80 feet away with a thrown tomahawk.

Reward: 50 Dead Eye XP and $10

This can be easily accomplished without losing honor by finding a rival gang camp in the wild, especially in a vast open area like the Heartlands (O'Driscolls can only be found here before the epilogue, however). NPC camps being sacked by Murfrees are also a good option, as most of them can be found in open areas too.

Alternatively, the player can try their luck in gang hideouts, the best being Hanging Dog Ranch, the front gate of Shady Belle, and (after the epilogue) Fort Mercer, Thieves' Landing and Gaptooth Breach.

Rank 5[]

Kill six animals without switching or reloading your weapon.

Reward: 50 Dead Eye XP and $10

A very quick way to accomplish this is by finding a flock of ducks or geese resting by a river and then shooting them with Dead Eye activated with the varmint rifle. The player must kill all six targets in the same Dead-Eye use, because if they try and use Dead-Eye a second time, their weapon will automatically reload. An alternative is a revolver on a group of chickens. Some locations such as Emerald Ranch or Saint Denis have some.

Rank 6[]

Kill someone at least 660 feet* away with a long scoped rifle. *(202 meters)

Reward: 100 Dead Eye XP and $15

Using a rolling block rifle or carcano rifle, fully upgraded, with high velocity ammo or explosive ammo is recommended but it can be achieved with less upgrades. Hanging Dog Ranch is a good place as there is a long-range, flat area and the player won't lose honor or attract any unwanted attention. For this location, the player needs to stand approximately just above the first e in creek on the south of the river and adjust as necessary, the log for the challenge will give the player a distance when you get a kill. Otherwise, the player could complete the challenge by sniping from Citadel Rock, a high vantage point where the player can snipe passers-by.

The rifle used must have a long scope attached, or else the distance will not be counted.

Rank 7[]

Get seven headshots in a row.

Reward: Sharpshooter Off-Hand Holster

Again, the best way to accomplish this without losing honor is by overrunning a rival gang hideout, like Hanging Dog Ranch, Shady Belle or Fort Mercer.

Shooting animals is another option.

It seems that only frontal shots work.

Rank 8[]

Disarm three enemies without reloading or switching your weapon.

Reward: 100 Dead Eye XP and $15

The easiest way of completing this challenge early is to go to a place where enemies respawn in the same position and where you can shoot at their weapon easily with a scoped gun. Go behind one of them, aim at the weapon (the gun sight point should be white, not red), shoot it, escape by foot, and repeat two more times to complete the challenge. Do NOT mount your horse. You will place your long gun into the holster on the horse and the counter will start over. This happens even if you draw the same gun from the holster to meet the requirement not to switch guns.

  • A good place to do this is the Hanging Dog Ranch: sneak behind the most southeastern guard and aim at the butt of his rifle with a scoped carbine.
  • Also at Hanging Dog Ranch, using the Browning Gun in the barn is a quick way to complete the challenge, as targets appear to be disarmed when shot.[1]
  • Six Point Cabin has plenty of guards that are carrying long guns. If you approach carefully from the south, you can sneak up to some rocks and shoot a long gun out of the hands of one of the guards near a broken down wagon. Aim for the barrel of the gun with a scoped weapon and watch for the weapon to go flying. Run away to the south after the shot to reset the guards and then return again twice more.

Another convenient way is waiting until Chapter IV's "Urban Pleasures" is completed and the third level of Dead Eye is achieved which allows continuous manual fire - since guns will be fully reloaded every time Dead Eye is activated, players must successfully disarm three enemies in a single use of Dead Eye. Firearms with high ammo capacity are recommended.

A reliable strategy is to seek out a gang hideout where the player has a clear view of the enemies yet has cover far from the danger, such as Shady Belle or Fort Mercer. Pick up a scoped repeater (Lancaster or Litchfield are recommended), take cover far enough that the enemies won't chase you and use the scope to shoot their right arms.

Another way to complete this challenge is with the use of a Bow which does not reload according to the game's mechanics.[2]

Rank 9[]

Shoot three people's hats off in the same Dead Eye use.

Reward: 150 Dead Eye XP and $20

The people whose hats are shot off must not be killed or it will not count.

Normally the third level of Dead Eye is required to complete this challenge which is acquired in Chapter IV's "Urban Pleasures". This level of Dead Eye allows manually painting targets without the red X of a hit to use the weapon.

However, it is possible to complete this challenge as early as Chapter II. You will need to have completed "Pouring Forth Oil IV" which allows you to manually paint a target with a red X hit and stay in the same Dead Eye.

  • Go to a gunsmith and modify a shotgun with at least three shots available (such as the Pump-action Shotgun) to remove all upgrades. Standard rifling, short barrel, no sights, and so on. If your shotgun is very dirty/worn this is even better. A shotgun without familiarity also helps. You want to make this shotgun have the least amount of damage and lowest accuracy you can possibly get.
  • Equip the shotgun and choose normal shells for the shotgun.
  • Head to an area with people milling about that have hats on their heads. Valentine's main street between the shops works well but any town will do.

SAVE YOUR GAME! What you are about to try may or may not work the first time. It is entirely dependent upon how much damage you do shooting people in the face with a shotgun at a longer range. The further away you are, the better. More distance equals less shotgun pellets in the face, less chance of the victim dying, and still allows enough pellets to knock a hat off.

While the next part is a dastardly deed, you are going to shoot three people in the face with a shotgun with the hopes that the pellets will knock the hat off and only wound them terribly. Try to manually paint the head of each person as far away from the center of the face as possible in Dead Eye. You will have to register a red X hit to actually fire a round though so it is going to do damage.

When done correctly, three hats will fly off, the challenge will complete, and you will get a bounty for Assault. You did just shoot three people in the face on a crowded city street after all. Run away and pay off the bounty having completed this challenge two chapters earlier than Chapter IV's Dead Eye (which allows you to paint the hat with the X instead of the face).

The south side of Valentine station usually has a few people stood around or walking by. Despite it being a populated area you can escape quickly to the south.

Also, top hats like the ones used by the rich folk in Saint Denis, are a very easy target to avoid murder, and the wanted level is relatively easy to lose if the player knows their way throughout the city's alleys.

In the Epilogue, the sombreros from the Del Lobos and the grenadier hats from the Skinner Brothers are also easy to shoot off, especially from a safe distance.

Rank 10[]

Kill three flying birds with three consecutive long scoped shots.

Reward: Sharpshooter Gun Belt

You can go in and out of scope. South of Heartland Oil Fields by the 'W' on the map is a very good spot for having a lot of birds flying around. Otherwise, a spot by a river or lake with resting birds can work well.
