Shootouts were one of the two game modes available in the game Red Dead Redemption: Gunslingers, with the other being Duels. In Shootouts mode, the player could invite other players to fight in a shootout. Unlike Duels, shootouts did not cost any stamina, and were not modified by the player's attributes. Winning in shootouts was completely random.

Winning in a shootout awarded five skill points while losing in a shootout awarded two skill points.
