This bottle is handy for paralyzing would-be assailants. Just toss it in the direction of trouble and noxious gas will do the rest.

Satchel description from Red Dead Redemption

Snake Oil is a common name for a medical elixir that is sold with spurious claims. It can be found in Red Dead Revolver, and Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2, with different purposes.

Red Dead Revolver

Snake Oil is a throwing weapon found in Red Dead Revolver, that breaks upon impact to damage and temporarily stun enemies.

When used, snake oil temporarily renders enemies unable to shoot as they will be attempting to get liquid off themselves. After they begin to move again, their movements will be slowed down for a brief period.

Professor Perry uses Snake Oil as a weapon during his fight against Jack Swift, taking a swig from the bottle and then spit it back out at the player. Perry will heal himself several times over the course of the fight by drinking Snake Oil. Spitting Snake Oil is also his special move in Showdown Mode. NPCs refer to Perry as a "charlatan snake oil salesman."

Grizzly attacks Shadow Wolf with Snake Oil during the mission "Bear Mountain" if he gets close enough to melee attack.

It can first be obtained during the mission "The Mine" by interacting with a corpse that is inside the cell where the mission begins. It costs $400 for a quantity of five and only five can be purchased at a time.

Red Dead Redemption

Snake Oil is a consumable item found in Red Dead Redemption.

When consumed, Snake Oil refills the Dead Eye meter.

It will take about three seconds to drink the Snake Oil, but the dead eye meter will become full directly after use.

Snake Oil can be picked up from looted corpses, found in chests, or bought from General Store in MacFarlane's Ranch, Escalera and Chuparosa.

Red Dead Redemption II

Snake Oil is a Tonic found in Red Dead Redemption 2.

When consumed, Snake Oil refills the Dead Eye meter. There are three varieties: Snake Oil, Potent Snake Oil, and Special Snake Oil.

Snake Oil can be picked up from looted corpses, found in chests, bought from most General Stores. Potent Snake Oil can be crafted from Indian Tobacco.

  • Snake Oil was originally used by Chinese railroad workers as a remedy to treat joint pain while working; it was made from Chinese Water Snake. The ointment was introduced to other European workers with joint pains who would later exaggerate its effectiveness.
  • Nigel West Dickens is a stereotypical snake oil merchant who appears in many story missions. The player cannot actually buy snake oil from Mr. West Dickens, however. Although, it is worth noting that when John drinks Mr. West Dickens' elixer in the mission "You Shall Not Give False Testimony, Except for Profit", it does refill Marston's Dead Eye meter. This indicates that West Dicken's miracle tonic likely contains (or is entirely composed of) snake oil. Benedict Allbright is a snake oil salesman in Red Dead Redemption 2.
