Sydney Tanner is a minor character featured in Red Dead Redemption.

Nothing is known of Sydney's background. He has a relative, Hattie Tanner, buried in Tumbleweed cemetery and another, Rosalie Tanner, buried at Odd Fellow's Rest.

Sydney can most often be found in Armadillo and Thieves' Landing, but has been known to frequent other locations throughout New Austin.

He can also be encountered in a random encounter in which his horse has been rustled. The player can interact by getting the horse back or ignoring Sydney's plead for help. He can be seen in another random encounter where he and another man will ask Marston to deliver a wagon full of dynamite to a customer.

Mister, please help!
Sydney Tanner calling out to the player
My horse just got rustled clean from under me!
Sydney Tanner asking the player to get his horse back
Thank you sir. I'll pray for you.
Sydney Tanner thanking the player
Watch it, there mister!
Sydney Tanner when bumped into
I sure did call him a cracker, right to his face.
Sydney Tanner
I heard some damn cannibals eat the last kid out there!
Sydney Tanner
Have you heard about the battle in Tumbleweed?

  • In West Elizabeth, there is a bridge called Tanner's Span and a cabin called Tanner's Reach. It is unknown if there is any connection.
  • He is one of the few African-Americans in the game to use the term "cracker", an insult directed to the white southerners, mostly hillbillies.
