The American Inferno, Burnt Out is a is a five-part Stranger mission in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Story[]
Part I[]
Near the Upper Montana River, John Marston meets a man atop a mountain side writing a draft for a new book, and the two have a conversation in which he reveals himself to be Evelyn Miller, one of Dutch's personal idols. He then tells John to meet him at his cabin near Tanner's Reach.
Part II[]
When John later goes to his cabin, Miller takes him to find a group of hunters who have been killing animals for sport. He antagonizes the group before being punched in the face. After dealing with the hunters, he thanks John.
Parts III & IV[]
As John shows up again, Miller locks himself in his cabin and states that he won't eat, drink, or leave until his draft is complete.
John leaves food at his cabin on two occasions.
Part V[]
The third time John returns, he smells an awful stench. He breaks into the cabin to find the corpse of a deceased Miller. After taking his book, John reads Evelyn's last request, stating he wants to be burned to be with "the Eagles". John fulfills his request and burns Evelyn's cabin with his corpse inside.
Deaths[]
Part II[]

Video Walkthrough[]
Trivia[]
- This is the only stranger mission in Redemption 2 that is entirely exclusive to John.
- The title is a reference to a book by Miller, The American Inferno, which can be seen next to Dutch's tent.
- During part II, John will say "Unless you're showing me Bigfoot, you should know, I'm not so easily shocked, Mr. Miller" which is a reference to the Undead Nightmare side-mission "Birth of the Conservation Movement".
- When he closes himself in his cabin, Miller says that he can't fight his own nature: this is part of Dutch's final apology to John.
- If John becomes WANTED by the law before initiating the last part of the mission a glitch can occur where Miller will be standing undead in his cabin. This can continue even after the law has been lost and can be seen in the mission cutscene afterwards.[1] A standing, moving, undead Miller can also be seen if the player starts the cutscene, reloads the game from the autosave in the middle of the cutscene, and returns directly to the cabin to start the cutscene again.
- If the player shoots out or otherwise breaks Evelyn's windows while he is shut in his cabin, Evelyn's voice will still sound muffled.
