The Battle of Shady Belle is a mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. It is the final mission of Chapter 3.
Mission Overview[]
John and Arthur clear out the last remaining Lemoyne Raiders from Shady Belle before the gang relocate their caravan there.
Story[]
The morning after the assault on the Braithwaite Manor, Dutch and Hosea unsuccessfully attempt to reassure John that Jack will be safe and rescued soon. Pinkerton agents Milton and Ross find the gang's camp at Clemens Point. They offer the gang a deal: that they will be spared and granted amnesty if they leave and allow Dutch to be captured. Every gang member refuses and subsequently warn Milton to leave the camp. Flustered, Milton says that he’ll return with fifty men and that the gang should evacuate the area.
Resultantly, the gang are forced to move again. Recalling Shady Belle, a manor house discovered earlier by Lenny, with a remote location due to it being situated deep within the forest, Dutch sends Arthur and John to investigate it and clear out any remaining Lemoyne Raiders. On the way, John speaks of his dismay over Dutch and Hosea's failed scam with the two families and expresses regret for not taking good enough care of Jack. When they get there, they notice that there are a few Lemoyne Raiders, so the pair kill them and dump their bodies in the swamp just outside. John goes back to the rest of the gang to show them the way, and the gang arrive shortly afterwards. While the others set up the camp, Arthur and Dutch will ride off to the nearby city, Saint Denis, to begin searching for Jack.
Gold Medal Objectives[]
- Kill all the Lemoyne Raiders in Shady Belle.
- Clear two bodies from Shady Belle within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
- Complete within 11 minutes.
Deaths[]

- One Raider, the oldest and leader of that group of Raiders, commits suicide after a short speech if he isn't killed by Arthur.
Mission Failure[]
The mission will fail if the player:
- Assaults, kills or abandons John;
- Allows John to be killed;
- Assaults, kills or abandons Dutch;
- Leaves Shady Belle before the gang arrives;
- Kills or abandons their horse;
- Dies.
Trivia[]
- There is a typo in the subtitles in the opening cutscene, where Hosea's last name is spelled as "Mathews" when Milton addresses him.
- During this mission, there are several lines of dialogue that are recalled during "A Fork in the Road":
- If Arthur has low Honor in said mission, he remembers a part of only one quote from Agent Milton to Dutch: "Who made you the messiah to these lost souls...?"
- If he has high Honor, however, he remembers the lines "We can’t change what’s done, we can only move on" said by himself, and "I sometimes wonder if things are ever the way we remember 'em, if we were ever who we thought we was" said by John.
- When Milton asks John for his name, John replies "Rip Van Winkle". This may be a reference to the 1819 short story Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving, which is about a Dutch-American villager in colonial America who meets a mysterious Dutchmen, imbibes their liquor and falls asleep in the Catskill Mountains. This could also be a humorous reference to John being associated with a person named "Dutch".
- When dealing with the Raiders in the house, one of them will try and shoot at Arthur, but finds his gun empty, so he surrenders. If the player does not kill him, Arthur will let him leave. But when the Raider runs outside, he may end up getting shot and killed by John, who thought he was escaping.[1]
- When Arthur reaches the Lemoyne raider who wants to have a knife fight in a small room, it's possible to execute him by blasting off his head with a double-barrel shotgun and he will get right back up and follow Arthur until he's shot again.[2]
