Arthur: "I guess I... I'm afraid."
Sister: "There is nothing to be afraid of, Mr. Morgan. Take a gamble that love exists... and do a loving act."

The Fine Art of Conversation is a mission in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Mission Overview[]

Arthur attends a truce meeting between Colonel Favours and Rains Fall, where Rains Fall hopes to negotiate peace.

Story[]

While in camp, Arthur comes across Trelawny preparing to leave camp again. Trelawny assures Arthur that he'll be back, but Arthur tells him he should just leave and not come back, because everything is hopeless. Arthur gives Trelawny his blessing to leave, and after thanking Arthur, he leaves. Rains Fall then arrives and tells Arthur of a potential peace treaty between the U.S. Army and the Wapiti Indians. He then asks Arthur to come with Charles Smith and help keep the peace. With some persuasion by Charles, Arthur agrees to go and the three ride out.

Upon arriving, they approach the table where the talks are to be held. Colonel Favours and Captain Monroe are already there. However, during the discussion, Arthur begins coughing heavily from his Tuberculosis, causing Favours to ask a soldier to take Arthur to a nearby tent and get him some water. While waiting, Arthur overhears a conversation between two soldiers, revealing that Favours plans to put Captain Monroe on trial for treason and hang him. Arthur is then led back to the table, where talks have broken down. Rains Fall gets up to leave, and Monroe is angered by how the meeting was unproductive. Favours then orders him to be arrested, accusing him for gross insubordination, disobeying an order, and treason. However, Arthur and Charles take a soldier hostage, and make a transfer of the soldier for Monroe. Charles takes Monroe, while Arthur backs up to his horse and lets go of the man as he quickly gets on and the three ride off.

They try to escape but Monroe's horse is shot out from under him. They quickly run into some nearby trees and Arthur and Charles kill the incoming soldiers to protect Monroe, who refuses to kill any soldiers himself, due to his allegiance to them. After clearing the area, Monroe mounts Arthur's horse, and Arthur rides with Charles, fending off more pursuing soldiers. They eventually reach Emerald Station, and Arthur apologizes for the loss of Monroe's military career, and gives him some money. Monroe boards a train and Charles leaves.

Arthur then has a coughing fit and meets either Sister Calderón, who is going to Mexico, or Orville Swanson, who is leaving the gang. Both will try to comfort Arthur before boarding the train and leaving.

Gold Medal Objectives[]

  • Kill a pursuer's horse during the escape.
  • Complete within 9 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Complete with at least 75% accuracy.
  • Complete the mission without taking any health items.

Mission Failure[]

The mission will fail if the player:

  • Assaults, kills, or abandons Charles, Rains Fall, or Captain Monroe;
  • Allows Charles or Captain Monroe to be killed;
  • Disrupts the meeting;
  • Kills Col. Favours;
  • Kills or abandons their horse;
  • Dies.

Deaths[]

Trivia[]

  • At the end of this mission, Arthur interacts with either Orville Swanson or Sister Calderón depending on if "Of Men and Angels" has been completed or not. If this mission is replayed in the PC version regardless of whether or not the Strangers mission was completed, Swanson will appear at the end by default.
  • There are two bits of foreshadowing quotes that Arthur will remember during his final ride to camp in the "Red Dead Redemption" mission if his Honor is high:
    • If Arthur completed "Of Men and Angels", then during the conversation with Sister Calderón, when he asks what he should do, she advises him with, "Be grateful that for the first time, you see your life clearly."
    • If Arthur did not complete "Of Men and Angels", then during the conversation with Reverend Swanson, the latter tells him, "Save who you can and let the rest rot, and look after yourself."
      • If Arthur rides with low honor, Swanson will say, "You lived your way, you'll die your way."
  • If the player completed "Favored Sons" just before this mission, on the ride to the meeting, Charles will express anger at Dutch getting involved in the conflict between the US Army and the Wapiti Tribe, and getting Eagle Flies arrested, with Rains Fall adding that it won't help the Tribe's case.
  • Once this mission is completed, Reverend Swanson and Josiah Trelawny will no longer be at camp.
  • It is possible to kill Favours during the standoff, but it will result in a mission failure.
  • A unique night train with two sleeping cars can be found at the end of the mission. You can get on it by jumping into it right after the mission. The train finally stops at Valentine Station, from where it no longer moves.
  • Despite the song's title being named after the mission itself, and included in The Music of Red Dead Redemption 2: Original Score, nowhere in the mission does the song itself play, but only in Roanoke Ridge outside of the mission.
  • This is one of the few missions in the game where the player will not incur an honor loss for killing horses, the other ones being "Advertising, The New American Art", "Urban Pleasures" and "Our Best Selves".
  • Further positioning Arthur to eavesdrop on the soldiers' conversation is optional.
