“ | I cannot decide which I like less... the swamps or the city. Both are full of parasites, reptiles and slime. We're a long way east of land we know... and far from real open country. | „ |
—Arthur's journal entry |
The Joys of Civilization is a mission in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Mission Overview[]
Having just arrived in Saint Denis, Dutch and Arthur ask around the Bastille Saloon for information on Angelo Bronte.
Story[]
Arthur arrives at the saloon, and someone aims a gun at his head telling him to surrender. However, it is just Dutch having a bit of fun. He and Arthur talk about the city and how the bar should have some leads about Angelo Bronte. Dutch has already had no luck, so he tells Arthur to try himself and leaves. Arthur enters the bar and asks the bartender for information on Bronte. The bartender, however, refuses to divulge anything. Shortly after, a bar patron approaches Arthur, saying the street urchins in the back alley of the saloon may know about the man he is looking for.
Following the man's advice, Arthur heads into the back alleys to find the urchins, and inquires about Bronte. Two of them agree to help Arthur in exchange for $5. While they guide him on a tour of the city, one of the kids named Cleet steals Arthur's satchel and runs away with it, forcing Arthur to chase him.
- If Arthur is able to catch the thief: Cleet gives Arthur's satchel back and tells him about where Bronte lives, after which Arthur tells him to "get lost" and they part ways.
- If Arthur fails to catch the thief: Cleet leads Arthur into an ambush where several other urchins - some of which are armed - are waiting for him. One of them, who seems to be the leader of this gang, tells Arthur where to find Bronte, and returns his satchel to him.
Arthur subsequently meets with Dutch and upon relaying the location of Bronte's house, they decide to meet up across from it with John later.
Gold Medal Objectives[]
- Catch the street urchin before he reaches the market.
- Complete within 5 minutes and 30 seconds.
Tips[]
- It's very difficult to catch Cleet as he seems able to outrun Arthur in most cases.
- One opportunity to catch him occurs after he jumps off the trolley and runs through an archway. Run through the archway and immediately cut to the left where some men are talking near the fountain, then through the archway straight ahead of you. If you run fast enough, you might successfully tackle Cleet before he escapes any further.
- Another opportunity is when Cleet runs out onto the street and then into another alley across the street. At the end of the alley, he will head right and run up to the roof. Instead of following him, take a shortcut to the next street by climbing over the wall on the left. Then climb over another wall and run out onto the street through a gate. Turn left and run to the place where the red building ends and the wall begins. Wait until Cleet jumps down to the street and tackle him.
- The simplest (and fastest) method is to simply shoot the stagecoach Cleet jumps onto with incendiary bullets (which causes the driver to flee and the stagecoach to stop) and catch Cleet as soon as he jumps off.
Mission Failure[]
The mission will fail if the player:
- Assaults or kills Dutch;
- Lets the thief escape;
- Alerts the law;
- Kills their horse;
- Dies.

Trivia[]
- During the chase sequence, the "Whistle Horse" feature is disabled, leaving the player unable to ride their horse unless it was left nearby before the chase started. Even if the horse was left nearby it will walk away during the mission, making it less convenient to attempt to reach during the chase.
- It is possible to have the Satchel removed after the mission. All the player has to do is refrain from catching Cleet and skip the following cutscene.
- Even if the player has a different satchel equipped, Arthur's default satchel will still be shown during the cutscene with the street urchin gang.
- The leader of the street urchins bears some resemblance to Jimmy Hopkins, the protagonist in Bully, another title made by Rockstar Games.
