The Smell of the Grease Paint is a Stranger mission featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Story

When entering the Saloon of the Van Horn Trading Post, there are two members of a traveling sideshow, Miss Majorie and a strong simpleton named Bertram. Bertram loses his temper at bartender for taking a bottle of alcohol away from him. He begins choking the bartender before attempting to fight the protagonist. After a few good punches, Bertram apologizes. Miss Majorie mentions that her second act, Magnifico, has been missing. She needs help to find Magnifico to save the highlight of her show.

Magnifico can be found in the south-west of the outpost, sitting at a campfire in the woods. When he realizes that Miss Majorie has sent someone to find him, he disappears in a cloud of smoke. This begins a chase where the player must follow the clouds of smoke and catch Magnifico. He attempts hiding in trees before fleeing across the railroad tracks and running right into the arms of Bertram. The three of them then ride off to act for their next show in Saint Denis.

The protagonist heads to the Theatre Râleur, the protagonist speaks with ticket taker that the performers asked him to attend the show and helped them in Van Horn. The ticket taker tells the protagonist that he will let them know and to come see him after the show. Miss Marjorie greets the audience and uses a whip. She introduces Bertram to the stage and states that his very strong. She asks a volunteer to step up on the stage to test Bertram's strength. A male volunteer steps up to the stage and she asks him to punch Bertram in the stomach and the man punches Bertram twice. Bertram gets angry and attacks him. Marjorie stops Bertram and the man confronts Marjorie about what kind of show is this. Bertram picks up the man and

Magnifico magically appears on stage. Magnifico assures the audience that he can control Bertram and orders Bertram to drop him. Magnifico preforms magic to the audience. He makes a chicken appear out of nowhere, disappear, and then makes a chicken appear cooked on a plate. His next trick he preforms causes her to have a wardrobe malfunction, which enrages Marjorie. She start using her whip at Magnifico and Magnifico states he wanted to give them a show and she tells not in that manner. Magnifico get mad and storms off stage. Bertram leaves the stage and Marjorie thank the audience for watching their show. After show the protagonist can collect the money and a letter from Miss Marjorie from the ticket taker.

Walkthrough

After initiating the quest-line, ride southwest to the woods and chase Magnifico. Follow his trail of smoke clouds until the mission is over. To collect your reward, visit Miss Majorie's show in the Theatre Râleur in Saint Denis and watch their show. Afterwards, speak to the vendor and you'll receive a letter from Majorie with $40 inside.

Glitches

• When Miss Marjorie appears once the player has stopped Magnifico, Magnifico may become invisible. His model can be seen standing to the right next to the wagon. However, it will not do anything and the cutscene will continue with the invisible model.

• A cut mission in Red Dead Redemption was to feature a giant and a midget. Marston was going to get the giant and midget to meet, as the two were alone and needed company. However, their meeting doesn't go as planned, and Marston has a choice of whether or not to kill the giant. This mission is considered to be a modified form of that cut mission.
• This title is a wordswapped parody of the title of the 1964 musical The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd.
