Characters are the driving force behind the narrative of Red Dead Redemption, and include the various personalities and figures the player may and will encounter throughout their time in the game.

Arthur Morgan

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Arthur Morgan is the primary protagonist of Red Dead Redemption II, and the playable character of the game's Main Story portion. One of Dutch van der Linde's most trusted men, Morgan is a senior member of the Van der Linde gang, serving as its lead enforcer.

Being one of the gang's longest serving members, Arthur is highly respected by the Van der Linde gang's younger and newer members. However, despite his strong bond with Dutch, Morgan begins to doubt his long-time leader as he notices his change in behavior, and begins to worry about his and the gang's fates.

John Marston - Redemption 2
John Marston

First appearance: "Enter, Pursued by a Memory"

John Marston is the secondary protagonist of Red Dead Redemption II, and the playable character of the game's Epilogue portion. Taken in by Dutch at a young age, he is considered one of the criminal's most valued proteges alongside Morgan, with whom he has a feud.

The future protagonist of 2010's Red Dead Redemption, John struggles with his shaky relationship with Abigail Roberts and their son, Jack, while also putting doubt in Dutch's continued leadership. As internal conflicts within the gang rise, John is proven to be a valuable ally to Morgan, despite their differences.

Dutch van der Linde is a notorious criminal and the leader of the Van der Linde gang, one of the most dangerous gangs in the Old West. As civilization and technology grow in the previously untamed frontier, Dutch and his men wage a losing battle against lawmen and government in a futile attempt to remain free.

An intelligent man, Dutch is slowly consumed by insanity and paranoia as the law closes down on the gang and fractions rise inside.

Sadie adler
Sadie Adler

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Sadie Adler is a widow who chose to ride alongside the Van der Linde gang after they helped her on the night her husband was murdered.

Since then, Sadie is seeking vengeance and justice for her husband, willing to work with Dutch and his men despite her mistrust in them. Regardless, she is still good friends with Arthur and a few other members of the gang.

Charles Smith

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Charles Smith is one of the newer members of the Van der Linde gang, having joined around six months ago. A man of African and Native American descent, Charles considers the gang his family due to accepting him regardless of race.

A dependable and trustworthy man, Charles is proven to be a valuable asset to the gang as his skills as a hunter, a gunman and a scouter make him one of Dutch's deadliest men. In spite of his high combat skills, Smith is a generally kind and reserved man.

Micah Bell - Redemption 2
Micah Bell

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Micah Bell is one of the newest gunmen recruited by Dutch after the former saved Van der Linde once in a bar. A violent and greedy criminal, Micah is considered one of the most dangerous members of the Van der Linde gang.

Micah quickly rises through the gang's ranks and gains Dutch's favor as he appeals to his leader's lust for violence and chaos. His reckless and vicious nature constantly pits Bell against Morgan, who disapproves of Micah's influence over the gang.

Hosea Matthews

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Hosea Matthews is Dutch's oldest friend and longest-serving comrade, as well as a mentor and father figure to both Morgan and Marston. A sneaky and slickly-spoken conman, Hosea often serves as the rational voice of Dutch when the latter's hot-blooded personality goes out of control.

Unlike his partner, Hosea is more composed and collected when dealing with various affairs of the gang. He is looked up to by the rest of the gang for his gentle demeanor and joyful personality, although he knows when to get serious when the situation requires it.

Susan Grimshaw

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Susan Grimshaw is the arbiter of the Van der Linde gang and the woman in charge of settling up a camp every time the group moves to a new location. She is a long-time criminal, being one of the gang's founding members.

Miss Grimshaw is a harsh and stern woman who never hesitates to put the gang's members in their place if they act out of line, and not even Arthur and Dutch can escape her wrath. Regardless, she is still a caring motherly figure to the gang, and is credited with keeping it intact.

Leopold Strauss

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Leopold Strauss is the bookkeeper and loan shark of the Van der Linde gang, an elderly Austrian immigrant with a knack to money businesses and funding.

Strauss is a polite and soft-spoken man who nonetheless shows little compassion to his clients, whom he deliberately chooses as weak and troubled people who can't pay his loans in time. He often sends Arthur to be his money collector, although even Morgan appears to be disgusted by Strauss' lack of empathy.

Javier Escuella

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Javier Escuella is a Mexican mercenary and former revolutionary who found his way with Dutch five years ago when he was at the lowest point of his life. For this, Javier is immensely loyal to his savior, and is also good friends with Morgan and Marston.

One of the gang's kindest and most idealistic members, Javier is often one of the first members to jump and help a comrade in need. He is a skilled fighter, but is also a cultured man with fondness for music.

Bill Williamson

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Bill Williamson is a discharged soldier who, similarly to Javier, found purpose in life when Dutch met and recruited him into the Van der Linde gang. As such, he is also immensely loyal to his leader, and always tries to earn his respect.

Bill is among Dutch's primary combat-oriented men, and his military training and knowledge makes him an important part of the gang's robberies and shootouts. While not a particularly intelligent man, Bill tries his best to plan elaborate scores and earn the approval of both Dutch and Morgan.

Abigail Roberts

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Abigail Roberts was an orphan brought into the Van der Linde gang by Uncle several years ago. She ended up forming several intimate relationships with the male members of the gang, the most prominent being Marston, with whom she sired a son, Jack.

She has a strain relationship with John, although she deeply loves him and worries for his safety. Jack is her pride and purpose in life, and she viciously shields him from the gang's more morally ambiguous actions.

Uncle

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Uncle is a colorful old man who hangs out around the Van der Linde gang primarily due to his comedic value, else Dutch would have ditched or killed him years ago.

He is a very lazy and cowardly man who avoids the gang's camp chores as much as he can, while drinking and partying whenever possible. While this puts him in odds with both Dutch and Arthur at times, he is a genuinely good person who helps keeping the gang morale and spirits high, and sometimes even find a score.

Lenny Summers

First appearance: "Outlaws from the West"

Lenny Summers is a new recruit for the Van der Linde gang, a young man of African descent who was on the run for several years after killing the men who murdered his father. He is among the youngest members of the gang.

Despite being less than 20 years old, Lenny is still one of the more prominent members of the gang during gunfights and robberies. He shares a strong bond with both Arthur and Hosea, who both dote on and look after him.

Colm O'Driscoll

First appearance: "Old Friends"

Colm O'Driscoll is the ruthless leader of the O'Driscoll Boys, the primary rivals to the Van der Linde gang, and the arch-enemy of Dutch. He and Dutch share a bitter enmity since Dutch killed Colm's brother and Colm killed Dutch's lover Annabelle.

Unlike the Van der Linde gang's focus on familial bonds, Colm simply hires and recruits as many men as he can, relying on numbers over skills. He has no empathy for any of his men, and is more than glad to sacrifice as many men he has against Dutch.

Rains Fall

First appearance: "Eastward Bound"

Rains Fall is the chieftain of the Wapiti Indians, a group of Native Americans living in the Wapiti Indian Reservation. He is a gentle old man who works his hardest to prevent unnecessary causalities among his people while dealing with the American Army, even though he is aware the young men in his tribe wish to fight.

He forms a strong friendship with Morgan and becomes a close ally to him when it becomes evident that the Van der Linde gang is falling apart.

Eagle Flies

First appearance: "Eastward Bound"

Eagle Flies is the brash son of Rains Fall, who wishes to fight off the American government and keep his tribe's lands. Idealistic and prideful, Eagle Flies becomes captured by Dutch's charisma and similar sense of hatred against the government, although both his father and Morgan feel that he is simply being manipulated by Dutch.

Andrew Milton

First appearance: "A Fisher of Men"

Agent Andrew Milton is a stern member of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, tasked with his partner Edgar Ross to hunt down Dutch van der Linde. He is also hired by businessman Leviticus Cornwall after the the gang attacked Cornwall's property.

Determined to bring Dutch to justice, Milton gives the gang a chance to hand their leader over, before he will use everything in his arsenal to destroy Van der Linde.

Leviticus Cornwall

First appearance: "The Sheep and the Goats"

Leviticus Cornwall is an incredibly powerful businessman with hands in oil, railroad and sugar businesses, as well as being the the financial backer of the Pinkerton agency after the Van der Linde gang attacked some of his properties.

Unlike other enemies of the Van der Linde gang, Cornwall has no patience or tolerance against Dutch's men. He will spend as much as money as he can to annihilate the gang for all the trouble they caused him.

Leigh Gray

First appearance: "The New South"

Leigh Gray is the jolly sheriff of the town of Rhodes. He is a member of the powerful Gray family, who rules Rhodes and is in years-long feud with the Braithwaite family. He is a relatively friendly and absent-minded lawman, and is tricked by Dutch into inducting several of the gang's members as his deputies.

Catherine Braithwaite

First appearance: "Advertising, The New American Art"

Catherine Braithwaite is the elderly matriarch of the Braithwaite family. As the head of the Braithwaites, Catherine leads her family in a bitter feud with the Grays, as well as having connections to the local Lemoyne Raiders. When the Van der Linde gang gets in touch with one of her businesses, Catherine sees opportunity to use them for her own ends.

Angelo Bronte

First appearance: "Angelo Bronte, A Man of Honor"

Angelo Bronte is an Italian immigrant who became the crimelord of Saint Denis, a large, industrialized city corrupted by his influence and wide array of connections. While he has links to several figures such as the Braithwaites, Bronte sees all of them as nothing but pawns.

Alberto Fussar

First appearance: "The Gilded Cage"

Colonel Alberto Fussar is one of the many connections of Angelo Bronte, as well as being the governor of an island called Guarma, whom he rules with an iron fist. Fussar eventually finds himself as an enemy of the Van der Linde gang when he and his men become an obstacle for Dutch.

Hercule Fontaine

First appearance: "Welcome to the New World"

Hercule Fontaine is a former Haitian slave who became a major figure in rebellion against Alberto Fussar, the governor of the island of Guarma. Due to stressful circumstances, Hercule strikes an alliance with Dutch and Morgan, promising to help them out if they will support his fight against Fussar.

Henry Favours

First appearance: "The Fine Art of Conversation"

Henry Favours is a Colonel of the U.S. Army who once participated in the American Civil War, only to be stationed at the Wapiti Indian Reservation and oversee negotiations with the Wapiti Indians headed by Rains Fall. However, as a man who clings into his old career, Favours agrees to a deal with Leviticus Cornwall to drive off Wapiti's residents.

Simon Pearson

Simon Pearson is the butcher and cook of the Van der Linde gang, as well as one of the figures responsible for establishing new camps whenever the gang moves to a new location. He is a former US Navy soldier, who found his way into the gang while on the verge of financial troubles.

Karen Jones

Karen Jones is a scam artist who found herself affiliated with the Van der Linde gang. She enjoys the outlaw lifestyle and the various thrills it includes, and is also known to be a heavy drinker.

Mary-Beth Gaskill

Mary-Beth Gaskill is a skilled thief of the Van der Linde gang, with affinity for pickpocketing. In spite of her affiliation with the gang, Gaskill is a kind and good-natured woman who deeply treasures the family she has found with the Van der Linde boys.

Tilly Jackson

Tilly Jackson is a long-time outlaw despite her young age, who joined the Van der Linde gang after she left another gang. Thanks to her experience, Tilly is an outspoken and headstrong woman who also knows how to handle in times of crisis.

Orville Swanson

Orville Swanson is a former clergyman who lost his position as his family due to indulging in alcohol, gambling and sex. He once saved the life of Dutch van der Linde, which allowed him to travel with the Van der Linde gang.

Molly O'Shea

Molly O'Shea is the current lover of Dutch van der Linde. She hails from a wealthy family in Ireland, and immigrated into the U.S. in search of an adventure, ultimately falling in with the Van der Linde gang. Due to her cold and arrogant attitude, she is disliked by other members of the gang, while her relationship with Dutch slowly deteriorates.

Jack Marston

Jack Marston is the young son of John Marston and Abigail Roberts, sired shortly after Abigail's recruitment into the Van der Linde gang. A cheerful and innocent child, Jack is shielded and loved by the older members of the gang whom he sees as uncles and aunts, and they make sure he won't be exposed to their violent lifestyle.

Kieran Duffy

First appearance: "Old Friends"

Kieran Duffy is a reluctant member of the O'Driscoll Boys. He is captured by the Van der Linde gang early on as a hostage and informant against Colm, but eventually joins into Dutch's ranks as the gang accepts him.

Josiah Trelawny is an eccentric and tricky conman affiliated with the Van der Linde gang. He frequently leaves and rejoins the gang at random times, usually returning with vital pieces of information before taking his leave again.

Sean MacGuire is an Irish gunman and thief, and a member of the Van der Linde gang. He is dim-witted and immature, but is also known to be loyal and brave when working with Arthur and the gang.
