Verne Wiggins is an old gunfighter who was one of the original settlers of Brimstone. He has lived in Brimstone for about forty years. After Verne's wife died, he met Mathias Lampry at the funeral and they became good friends. The two are known to talk at length, much to the relief of other residents who had grown tired of Verne's stories.

Verne's sister lived in Tarnation. When she died, Verne met Mr. Black and the encounter reinforced his desire to avoid Tarnation at all costs.
