The wagon is a heavy and sturdy two to four-wheeled vehicle. In the times of Red Dead Revolver and Red Dead Redemption, it was pulled by either horses, mules, or oxen. Most are either pulled by two, or up to four animals at a time depending on the weight of the load.
It should also be known that the wagon are very different from Carts. A cart is a method of transportation that has only two wheels, and is pulled by one animal. Also its carrying capacity is far less than that of the wagon. In rainy weather, wagons will be found with tarps placed over them, obviously to keep the supplies or people in the back dry. In multiplayer, wagons are less common, but are frequently used to carry posses around in a way different to the usual gangs on horseback.
Just like a stagecoach, a wagon can protect the player from predatory animals. Animals will neither attack the horses nor John Marston; most animals, even bears, will in fact flee.

If a wagon is carrying people in the back, shooting them in the head will make them slowly get up, climb out the wagon, and suddenly die, all the time having a partly exploded head.
