Walton's Gang is a group of road agents and robbers led by Walton Lowe, featured in Red Dead Redemption.

History

Background

Walton's gang was founded by Walton Lowe at some point between 1907 and 1911. By 1911, Walton's Gang is one of the most dangerous gangs found in New Austin, due to its ruthlessness and control over a large amount of territory in Cholla Springs.

Events of Red Dead Redemption

In the mission "Political Realities in Armadillo", John Marston assists Marshal Leigh Johnson and his deputies in fighting past members of the gang in order to capture or kill Walton Lowe.

After Lowe's death - which is reported in the newspaper regardless of whether the player killed him - the gang continues to function. Many of its members can be found in the saloon in Armadillo, and they can also function as bounty targets.

Events of Undead Nightmare

Note: The events of Undead Nightmare are not considered part of the same canon as Red Dead Redemption. The following description is therefore not contiguous with the preceding section on Red Dead Redemption.

In Undead Nightmare, several members of Walton's gang can be found as both survivors and as undead throughout New Austin.

As survivors, remnants of the gang continue to inhabit the Twin Rocks gang hideout. When Twin Rocks is under attack by the undead hordes, the survivors will take shelter on the rooftops, where they will request Marston's help in clearing the hideout of the undead. If Twin Rocks is saved and the gang members survive the attack, they will remain on the rooftops, though they will move to the campfire upon Marston's next visit to the area. The survivors at Twin Rocks include Rufus Higbee, Dale Chesson, and Alfie Scruggs.

As undead, members of the gang can be found in certain locations while they are under attack, including Thieves' Landing, Armadillo, and Rathskeller Fork; they also appear in Twin Rocks alongside their surviving counterparts. All undead Walton's gang members are fresh undead and like with all undead, they will be hostile if they are approached.

Overview

Walton's Gang can be found committing crimes all over New Austin, mostly Cholla Springs and Gaptooth Ridge. They use Twin Rocks as a gang hideout, they drink in the Armadillo saloon and some members gamble at Rathskeller Fork. They can also be seen inhabiting Pleasance House in a mission for Leigh Johnson, though this is not a permanent location for the gang.

Members of the Walton's Gang stand out due to their top hats and matching scarves. After completing the set requirements, the player can unlock the Walton's Gang Outfit and dress as a member of the gang.

Trivia

General

• Walton's name may be a reference to the real world Dalton Gang, a gang lead by four brothers who undertook numerous bank and train robberies in the early 1890s.
• They appear to take inspiration from the Natives, a gang from the movie Gangs of New York, as the Natives wear matching top hats with a blue stripe rather than a red one.

Red Dead Redemption

• While doing the Fightin' Around the World trophies/achievements, the player is recommended to wear their gang outfit, as Marston will pass as one of their own until he eventually takes an aggressive action against them.
• If the player points a gun at a gang member in Armadillo and shoots him non-lethally, any lawman who is in the vicinity will attack the criminal immediately and usually kill them. Alternatively, if the player does shoot them lethally, they will not lose any Honor or gain a bounty.
• The Gang members in Armadillo live in a small camp on the north side of town, specifically behind the blacksmith's shed. There are a couple of blankets, a box, and a lantern. Link Huston and Woody Swenson usually go there after they leave the bar.
• The Walton's Gang's hat can be purchased in PlayStation Home on the PS3 for use with the player's avatar.
• In multiplayer, Walton's gang is the only faction to have two playable legendary characters; Ezekiel Hogey and Mescalero Mike.
• Walton's gang owns the most hideouts in single player.

Undead Nightmare

• Rufus Higbee can sometimes be found as the survivor in the "One less zombie to kill" random encounter. If the player helps defeat the undead surrounding him, he will thank the player and quip that he'll make his way up "north".
• While Twin Rocks is safe, if the player greets Rufus Higbee or Dale Chesson, they will not reply back. However, greeting Alfie Scruggs will result in him saying "Hello" or "Greetings" in return.
  • This is similar to how in Red Dead Redemption, most gang members will not reply to a player's greeting, with Alfie Scruggs being one of the few that do greet the player back.
  • In addition, while most survivors in other towns will speak to one another if they are near each other, there is no dialogue between any of the gang members, even despite their close proximity at the campfire.
• Undead Walton's gang members cannot be found outside of towns that are under attack, making them relatively uncommon compared to other undead. They share this characteristic with the undead nuns, who likewise can only be found in Las Hermanas while it is under attack.
  • Despite this, it is possible for Dale Chesson's undead model to spawn in Gaptooth Ridge, although this appears to be a relatively rare occurrence, and may require going to Gaptooth Breach first before venturing back out into the wilderness to find him.
