Winton Holmes is a minor character featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.
History[]
Background[]
Winton Holmes was once a refinery worker, although he would lose his job and become financially unstable. This resulted in him taking a loan from Leopold Strauss, which Winton had difficulties repaying.
Events of Red Dead Redemption 2[]
Due to Winton's debt being unpaid, Strauss sends Arthur Morgan to retrieve the debt from him. Arthur finds him napping at a camp just north of the town Strawberry, and confronts him, demanding that he repay the loan. Winton claims he has no money, but instead suggests that they hunt a rare White Cougar which he has been tracking, to sell the pelt and thus repay the loan. Realising that this is the only way to get the debt money, Arthur agrees.
Arthur and Winton travel to the mouth of a cave, where Winton suggests that they split up and search different areas of the cavern. While Arthur is searching, he hears a scream and begins looking for Winton. Arthur soon finds Winton's corpse, bloody and covered in both scratches and bite wounds. The cougar then attacks Arthur, but he opens fire and successfully kills it. Arthur subsequently sells the pelt, therefore absolving Winton's debt.
Mission appearances[]

Trivia[]
- It is not possible to save Holmes from being killed by the cougar. If the player follows him down the left path, he will tell them to search the right side of the cavern, and the cougar will not show up to kill him until the player leaves him alone.
- When riding to the cougar's lair, Holmes asks Arthur if he has ever seen an Alabaster Wild Cat. This is possibly a reference to one of the variants of cat found in the 2018 Microsoft Studios game Sea of Thieves, which was first released only a few months before Red Dead Redemption 2.
